Using resistance distance from circuit theory to model dispersal through habitat corridors

Impact of post-ruminally infused macronutrients on bovine mammary gland expression of genes involved in fatty acid synthesis, energy metabolism, and protein synthesis measured in RNA isolated from milk fat

Background: Characterising the regulation of milk component synthesis in response to macronutrient supply is critical for understanding the implications of nutritional interventions on milk production. Gene expression in mammary gland secretory cells was measured using RNA isolated from milk fat globules from 6 Holstein-Friesian cows receiving 5-d abomasal infusions of saline, essential amino acids(AA), or glucose(GG) or palm olein(LG)without(LAA) or with(HAA) essential AA, according to a 6 × 6 Latin square design. RNA was isolated from milk fat samples collected on d 5 of infusion and subjected to real-time quantitative PCR. We hypothesised that m RNA expression of genes involved in de novo milk fatty acid(FA) synthesis would be differently affected by GG and LG,and that expression of genes regulating transfer of tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates would increase at the HAA level. We also hypothesised that the HAA level would affect genes regulating endoplasmic reticulum(ER)homeostasis but would not affect genes related to the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1(m TORC1) or the integrated stress response(ISR) ***: Infusion of GG did not affect de novo milk FA yield but decreased expression of FA synthase(FASN).Infusion of LG decreased de novo FA yield and tended to decrease expression of acetyl-Co A carboxylase 1(ACC1).The HAA level increased both de novo FA yield and expression of ACC1, and tended to decrease expression of mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase(PCK2). m RNA expression of m TORC1 signaling participants was not affected by GG, LG, or AA level. The aim of this review is to present and discuss the most recent literature about the processing of insect biomass and its impact on nutritive value,further implementation of meals and fats derived from invertebrates to livestock(poultry and swine),aquaculture(salmonids),and companion animal diets and their impact on growth performance,metabolic response,and gastrointestinal microbiota ***,the most important barriers to obtaining unified products in terms of their nutritive value are considered,i.e.,to define insects'nutrient requirements,including various technological groups and further biomass processing(slaughtering,drying,and storage).Due to the current limitation in the insect production process consisting of the lack of infrastructure,there is stress on the relatively small amount of insect products added to the animal diets as a functional feed ***,only in the case of pet nutrition may insects be considered a full replacement for commonly used environmentally harmful and allergenic ***,the least information has been published on this ***,more scientific data are needed,particularly when the pet food branch and insect-based diets are rapidly growing.

Parallel fluorescence and phosphorescence monitoring of singlet oxygen photosensitization in rats

The vitality of European forests continues to decline due to new pests and diseases,climate-change related disturbances and high loads of atmospheric nitrogen *** soil health is a major factor underpinning the low vitality of West-European *** tree species with soil ameliorative traits is proposed as an avenue to counteract soil acidification and improve overall forest *** we evaluate the impact of black cherry(Prunus serotina Ehrh.),a known rich litter species,on the vitality of neighboring pedunculate oak(Quercus robur L.)in ten mixed forests on sand in Germany,Belgium and the *** found that black cherry admixture increases foliar N and P to a surplus whereas it causes deficiencies in foliar Mg,thereby resulting in an overall negative effect on oak foliar nutrient ***,defoliation of oak leaves by herbivory decreases with the proximity of black *** structural equation modelling(SEM),we tested the hypothesized‘improved soil health’*** analyses showed that black cherry admixture leads to lower accumulation in the humus layer,resulting in higher soil base saturation which has a positive effect on foliar Ca yet a negative effect on total ***,the SEM illustrated that herbivory of oak leaves decreases when black cherry is admixed,both via dilution and improved soil *** effects of black cherry on oak vitality via“improved soil health”in our SEM are however small in comparison to direct ***,our study showed that the combined positive and negative impacts of black cherry on oak vitality are limited,which tempers the potential benefits of using the rich litter species to counteract oak decline via improved soil health–yet,the concern of black cherry as an invasive alien species negatively affecting the vitality of mature pedunculate oak trees may also be exaggerated.

Holocene tephra deposits in the northern Okinawa Trough

The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of sediments of Core CSH1, which was collected from the northern Okinawa Trough, indicate that large amounts of volcanic materials have deposited in the northern Okinawa Trough during the Holocene. On the basis of down-core variations in mineral and element contents of sediments, two layers in the uppermost section of Core CSH 1 characterized by high quartz, Na2O, MnO, K20, uranium contents and low contents of clay minerals, volatiles, Fe2O3, MgO, CaO and strontium, have been identified as the tephra deposits. Systematic grain-size measurements also suggest that sediments from the northern Okinawa Trough are made up of terrigenous materials and volcanic ashes with different proportion during the Holocene. The sedi- ments of tephra layers in Core CSH1 show bi-modal patterns in grain-size distribution with modal grain-sizes of 74.3 and 7.81 μm, respectively. According to the radiocarbon dating on shells of zooplankton foraminifera, two tephra layers in Core CSH1, formed at 7 250 and 10 870 a BP （cal）, approximately correspond to the K-ah tephra [7 300 a BP （cal）] and the eruption of Kuju Volcano （12-10 ka BP）, respectively.

Indications and Outcome of Gynaecological Hysterectomy at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano: A 5-Year Review

Background: Hysterectomy, is a common operation worldwide. It is a major surgery, which leads to significant morbidity and mortality, hence, there must be a justifiable indication before the procedure is undertaken. Symptomatic uterine fibroid and utero-vaginal prolapse are common indications in this environment. Objectives: To determine the prevalence, indications and outcome of hysterectomy at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. Study Design: A retrospective study of all the hysterectomies that were done in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano between 1st of jan 2009 and 31st of Dec 2013. Result: During the period of study, there were 3843 major gynaecological operations. Out of which hysterectomy was 196, giving hysterectomy rate of 5.1% of all major gynaecological operations. Hysterectomy was highest among patient aged 40 - 49 years accounting for 54.6% of cases and the commonest indication was uterine fibroid, constituting 66.4% of all hysterectomies. Total abdominal hysterectomy was the most frequently preformed, accounting for 78.1% while, vaginal hysterectomy accounts for 20.9% of cases and subtotal hysterectomy was 1%. Hysterectomy was mostly complicated with post-operative pyrexia constituting 24% of all the complications while ureteric injury was the least, constituting 1%. There was no mortality recorded. Most of the patients who had hysterectomy were discharge in less than 10th post-operative day accounting for 91.3% of cases. However, 80.5% of patients who had vagina hysterectomy were discharge in less than 5th post-operative day. Conclusion: The prevalence of hysterectomy was 5.1%. Uterine fibroid was the commonest indication while post-operative pyrexia was the commonest complication found.
