Impact of gastroesophageal reflux disease on the quality of life of Polish patients

BACKGROUND Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a serious health and social problem leading to a considerable decrease in the quality of life of patients. Among the risk factors associated with reflux symptoms and that decrease the quality of life are stress, overweight and an increase in body weight. The concept of healthrelated quality of life (HRQL) covers an expanded effect of the disease on a patient’s wellbeing and daily activities and is one of the measures of widely understood quality of life. HRQL is commonly measured using a selfadministered, disease-specific questionnaires. AIM To determine the effect of reflux symptoms, stress and body mass index (BMI) on the quality of life. METHODS The study included 118 patients diagnosed with reflux disease who reported to an outpatient department of gastroenterology or a specialist hospital ward for planned diagnostic tests. Assessment of the level of reflux was based on the frequency of 5 typical of GERD symptoms. HRQL was measured by a 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and level of stress using the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale. Multi-variable relationships were analyzed using multiple regression. RESULTS Eleven models of analysis were performed in which the scale of the SF-36 was included as an explained variable. In all models, the same set of explanatory variables: Gender, age, reflux symptoms, stress and BMI, were included. The frequency of GERD symptoms resulted in a decrease in patients’ results according to 6 out of 8 SF-36 scales- except for mental health and vitality scales. Stress resulted in a decrease in patient function in all domains measured using the SF-36. Age resulted in a decrease in physical function and in overall assessment of self-reported state of health. An increasing BMI exerted a negative effect on physical fitness and limitations in functioning resulting from this decrease. Uncertainty and disturbance estimator-based model predictive control for wet flue gas desulphurization system

Wet flue gas desulphurization technology is widely used in the industrial process for its capability of efficient pollution *** desulphurization control system,however,is subjected to complex reaction mechanisms and severe disturbances,which make for it difficult to achieve certain practically relevant control goals including emission and economic performances as well as system *** address these challenges,a new robust control scheme based on uncertainty and disturbance estimator(UDE)and model predictive control(MPC)is proposed in this *** UDE is used to estimate and dynamically compensate acting disturbances,whereas MPC is deployed for optimal feedback regulation of the resultant *** viewing the system nonlinearities and unknown dynamics as disturbances,the proposed control framework allows to locally treat the considered nonlinear plant as a linear *** obtained simulation results confirm that the utilization of UDE makes the tracking error negligibly small,even in the presence of unmodeled *** the conducted comparison study,the introduced control scheme outperforms both the standard MPC and PID(proportional-integral-derivative)control strategies in terms of transient performance and ***,the results reveal that a lowpass-filter time constant has a significant effect on the robustness and the convergence range of the tracking error.

The ability to characterize three-dimensional(3D)magnetization distributions in nanoscale magnetic materials and devices is essential to fully understand their static and dynamic magnetic *** contrast techniques in the transmission electron microscope(TEM),such as electron holography and electron ptychography,can be used to record two-dimensional(2D)projections of the in-plane magnetic induction of 3D nanoscale *** the 3D magnetic induction can in principle be reconstructed from one or more tilt series of such 2D projections,conventional tomographic reconstruction algorithms do not recover the 3D magnetization within a sample ***,we use simulations to describe the basis of an improved model-based algorithm for the tomographic reconstruction of a 3D magnetization distribution from one or more tilt series of electron optical phase images recorded in the *** algorithm allows a wide range of physical constraints,including a priori information about the sample geometry and magnetic parameters,to be *** also makes use of minimization of the micromagnetic energy in the loss *** demonstrate the reconstruction of the 3D magnetization of a localized magnetic soliton—a hopfion ring—and discuss the influence of noise,choice of magnetic constants,maximum tilt angle and number of tilt axes on the *** algorithm can in principle be adapted for other magnetic contrast imaging techniques in the TEM,as well as for other magnetic characterization techniques,such as those based on X-rays or neutrons.

High-quality wide-angle holographic content is at the heart of the success of near-eye display *** work proposes the first digital holographic(DH)system enabling recording wide-angle scenes assembled from objects larger than the setup field of view(FOV),which can be directly replayed without 3D deformation in the near-eye *** hologram formation in the DH system comprises free space propagation and Fourier transform(FT),which are connected by a rectangular ***,the object wave propagates in free space to the rectangular ***,the band-limited wavefield is propagated through the single lens toward the camera *** rectangular aperture can take two sizes,depending on which DH operates in off-axis or phase-shifting recording *** integral part of the DH solution is a numerical reconstruction algorithm consisting of two elements:fringe processing for object wave recovery and wide-angle propagation to the object *** second element simulates propagation through both parts of the experimental *** free space part is a space-limited angular spectrum compact space algorithm,while for propagation through the lens,the piecewise FT algorithm with Petzval curvature compensation is *** the experimental part of the paper,we present the wide-angle DH system with FOV25°×19°,which allows high-quality recording and reconstruction of large complex scenes.

Invasion of the raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides in Europe： History of colonization, features behind its success, and threats to native fauna

We aimed to review the history of the introduction and colonization of the raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides in Europe, the features behind its successful expansion and its impact on native fauna. The raccoon dog quickly colonized new areas after being introduced to the European part of the former Soviet Union. Today it is widespread in Northern and Eastern Europe and is still spreading in Central Europe. Features behind its success include its adaptability, high reproductive potential, omnivory, hibernation in northem areas, multiple introductions with 〉 9000 individuals from different localities, and tendency to wander enabling gene flow between populations. Firm evidence of the raccoon dog＇s negative impact on native fauna, such as a reduction in bird populations, is still scarce. Raccoon dogs may destroy waterfowl nests, although a nest predation study in Latvia did not confirm this. Predator removal studies in Finland suggested that the raccoon dog＇s impact on game birds is smaller than expected. However, raccoon dogs may have caused local extinction of frog populations, especially on islands. Raccoon dogs may compete with other carnivores for food, for example for carrion in winter, or for the best habitat patches. In northern Europe potential competitors include the red fox Vulpes vulpes and the badger Meles meles, but studies of their diets or habitat preferences do not indicate severe competition. The raccoon dog is an important vector of diseases and parasites, such as rabies, Echinococcus mul-tilocularis and Trichinella spp. and this is no doubt the most severe consequence arising from the spread of this alien species in Europe [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 584-598, 2011].

Borrowing titania's photoinduced electrons for molecular switching

When exposed to light, titanium dioxide （titania, TiO2） can act as a powerful catalyst for degrading a variety of organic compounds. Anatase--one of the polymorphs of TiO2--has a band gap of 3.2 eV; exposing it to ultraviolet light causes the formation of electron-hole pairs, which, in the presence of water, can generate hydroxyl radicals--strong oxidizing agents. The photocatalytic behavior of titania has enabled the removal of various chemicals and microbiological im- purities from both drinking water and industrial waste wa- ter.

Tuning and implementation variants of discrete-time ADRC

Practical implementations of active disturbance rejection control(ADRC)will almost always take place in discretized *** applications may have quite different needs regarding their discrete-time controllers,this article summarizes and extends the available set of ADRC implementations to provide a suitable variant for as many as possible use *** doing so,the gap between quasi-continuous and discrete-time controller tuning is closed for applications with low sampling *** main contribution of this article is the derivation of three different discrete-time implementations of error-based *** is shown that these are almost one-to-one counterparts of existing output-based implementations,to the point where transfer functions and coefficients can be reused in unaltered *** this way,error-based implementations become firmly rooted in the established landscape of discrete-time ***,it becomes possible to equip error-based variants with windup protection abilities known from output-based ADRC.

In this work,the problem of designing a robust control algor ithm for a DC-DC buck power converter is *** applied solution is based on a recenly proposed eror-based version of the active disturbance rejection control(ADRC)scheme,in which the unknown higher-order lerms of the reference signal are treated as additional components of the system"total disturbance".The motivation here is to provide a prac tical following of a reference voltage trajectory for the buck converler in specific cases where neither the analytical form of the desired signal nor its future values are known a priori,hence cannot be directly used for control *** this *** application of the error-based ADRC results in a prac-tically appealing control technique,with compact struc *** control rule,and intwitive tuning(inherited from the conventional output-based ADRC scheme).***,and experimental results are shown to validate the efficacy of the error-based ADRC in buck converter control,followed by a discussion about the revealed theoretical and practical limitations of this approach.

Deciphering the effects of disperser assemblages and seed mass on patterns of seed dispersal in a rodent community

The sizes of both seed dispersers and seeds are traits that are likely to interact to influence seed fate in many synzoochoric plant ***,we examined whether members of a granivorous rodent community consisting of species of different body size vary in their effectiveness as seed dispersers,and how this relationship may be altered by seed *** marked northern red oak(Quercus rubra)acorns with plastic tags and placed them in size-selective rodent *** exclosures allowed differential access of rodent groups based on different body size:(i)small(*** spp.);(ii)small and medium(*** striatus);and(iii)small,medium and large(*** carolinensis)species of *** removal did not differ among exclosure types,but more seeds were missing when removed by small rodents,probably because of *** treatments did not influence the relative frequency of acorn ***,small rodents cached considerably fewer and partially ate more acorns than the other 2 *** mean dispersal distance was the longest for cages with medium openings,intermediate for cages with large openings and the shortest for cages with small *** mass positively affected the probability of caching and this relationship was unaffected by exclosure *** conclusion,granivorous rodents of different body sizes strongly differed in their interactions with acorns,with small rodents acting primarily as acorn predators and medium and large species contributing significantly more to dispersal of red oaks.

In this work,we investigate two specific linear ADRC structures,namely output-and *** former is considered a“standard”version of ADRC,a title obtained primarily thanks to its simplicity and effectiveness,which have spurred its adoption across multiple *** latter is found to be especially appealing to practitioners as its feedback error-driven structure bares similarities to conventional control solutions,like PI and *** this paper,we describe newly found connections between the two considered ADRC structures,which allowed us to formally establish conditions for their ***,the conducted comprehensive performance comparison between output-and error-based ADRCs has facilitated the identification of specific modules within them,which can now be conveniently used as building blocks,thus aiding the control designers in customizing ADRC-based solutions and making them most suitable for their applications.
