Interchangeability of corneal curvature and asphericity measurements provided by three different devices

AIM: To evaluate the interchangeability of keratometric and asphericity measurements provided by three measurement systems based on different optical ***: A total of 40 eyes of 40 patients with a mean age of 34.1 y were included. In all cases, a corneal curvature analysis was performed with IOL-Master(IOLM), iDesign 2(ID2), and Sirius systems(SIR). Differences between instruments for flattest(K1) and steepest(K2) keratometric readings, as well as for magnitude and axis of corneal astigmatism were analyzed. Likewise, differences in asphericity(Q) between SIR and ID2 were also evaluated. RESULTS: Mean differences between devices for K1 were 0.20±0.21(P<0.001),-0.12±0.36(P=0.046) and-0.32±0.36 D(P<0.001) for the comparisons IOLM-SIR, IOLM-ID2 and SIR-ID2, respectively. The ranges of agreement for these comparisons between instruments were 0.41, 0.70, and 0.70 D. For K2, mean differences were 0.31±0.33(P<0.001),-0.08±0.43(P=0.265) and-0.39±0.38 D(P<0.001), with ranges of agreement of 0.65, 0.84, and 0.74 D. Concerning magnitude of astigmatism, ranges of agreement were in the limit of clinical relevance(0.49 D, P=0.011; 0.55 D, P=0.386; 0.43 D, P=0.05). In contrast, ranges of agreement were clinically relevant for astigmatic axis(26.68o, 33.83o and 18.37o, P≥0.121) and for Q between SIR and ID2(0.16, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The keratometric corneal power, astigmatic axis and asphericity measurements provideby the three systems evaluated cannot be considered as interchangeable, whereas measurements of corneal astigmatism obtained with SIR and ID2 can be considered as interchangeable for clinical purposes.

AIM : To evaluate the prediction error in intraocular lens(IOL) power calculation for a rotationally asymmetric refractive multifocal IOL and the impact on this error of the optimization of the keratometric estimation of the corneal power and the prediction of the effective lens position(ELP).METHODS: Retrospective study including a total of 25 eyes of 13 patients(age, 50 to 83y) with previous cataract surgery with implantation of the Lentis Mplus LS-312 IOL(Oculentis Gmb H, Germany). In all cases, an adj.sted IOL power(P IOLadj. was calculated based on Gaussian optics using a variable keratometric index value(n kadj. for the estimation of the corneal power(P kadj. and on a new value for ELP(ELP adj. obtained by multiple regression *** P IOLadj.was compared with the IOL power implanted(P IOLReal) and the value proposed by three conventional formulas(Haigis, Hoffer Q and Holladay Ⅰ).RESULTS: P IOLReal was not significantly different than P IOLadj.and Holladay IOL power(P >0.05). In the Bland and Altman analysis, P IOLadj.showed lower mean difference(-0.07 D) and limits of agreement(of 1.47 and-1.61 D)when compared to P IOLReal than the IOL power value obtained with the Holladay formula. Furthermore, ELP adj.was significantly lower than ELP calculated with other conventional formulas(P j. CONCLUSION: Refractive outcomes after cataract surgery with implantation of the multifocal IOL Lentis Mplus LS-312 can be optimized by minimizing thekeratometric error and by estimating ELP using a mathematical expression dependent on anatomical factors.

Background: Hypothermic preservation of boar semen is considered a potential method for omitting antibiotics from insemination doses, thereby contributing to the global antibiotic resistance defence strategy. Optimal laser intensity profiles for a uniform target illumination in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion

A numerical method providing the optimal laser intensity profiles for a direct-drive inertial confinement fusion scheme has been developed. The method provides an alternative approach to phase-space optimization studies, which can prove computationally expensive. The method applies to a generic irradiation configuration characterized by an arbitrary number NBof laser beams provided that they irradiate the whole target surface, and thus goes beyond previous analyses limited to symmetric configurations. The calculated laser intensity profiles optimize the illumination of a spherical *** paper focuses on description of the method, which uses two steps: first, the target irradiation is calculated for initial trial laser intensities, and then in a second step the optimal laser intensities are obtained by correcting the trial intensities using the calculated illumination. A limited number of example applications to direct drive on the Laser Mega j.ule(LMj. are described.

Steel Pitting Corrosion Analysis, Using a High Vaccum Epoxy Penetration Technique

An epoxy penetration technique was used to reproduce and analyze the pitting corrosion process occurred at a steel coupon surface. The samples were exposed to the resin under high vacuum conditions, in order to fulfill the pits caused by the corrosion process. With this technique, a 3D image of the corrosion damages was obtained. Once the image of the damaged surface was obtained, a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to analyze the morphology of the pits exhibited by the steel sample. The results were satisfactory, as different parameters such as the diameter, shape and depth of the pits originated, along with the corrosion preferential path, could be established. According to the results, the use of the epoxy penetration technique may be considered as alternating pitting corrosion analysis technique.

Innovative circular path harvester for mechanical harvesting of irregular and large-canopy olive trees

The harvesting process of the olive tree is mainly performed by manual means,because traditional olive orchards(the main planting typology)are formed of irregular,large-canopy trees that are very difficult to harvest *** that reason,the cost of harvesting is very high,and it threatens the future of these plantations whose conversion to other more modern layouts is not always possible due to several *** introduction of a harvester may represent the technological change that is the key factor for improved *** main purpose of this work was to develop a harvester based on canopy shaker technology for work on irregular,large trees in a circular *** design of the harvester was based on a determination of tree geometry,together with tree *** tests were used to determine machine-tree interaction,and to evaluate the removal,catch frame and driven *** proposed innovation allowed the fully mechanical harvest of previously planted trees with a removal efficiency of over 84%,achieving an effective field capacity of 0.21 hm^(2)/*** the results so far have been promising,further improvements are advisable in machine and tree adaptation.

Patients suffering from liver cirrhosis(LC) frequently require non-hepatic abdominal surgery,even before liver *** is an important risk factor itself for surgery,due to the higher than average associated morbidity and *** high surgical risk occurs because of the pathophysiology of liver disease itself and to the presence of contributing factors,such as coagulopathy,poor nutritional status,adaptive immune dysfunction,cirrhotic cardiomyopathy,and renal and pulmonary dysfunction,which all lead to poor *** evaluation of these factors and the degree of liver disease can help to reduce the development of complications both during and after abdominal *** the emergency setting,with the presence of decompensated LC,alcoholic hepatitis,severe/advanced LC,and significant extrahepatic organ dysfunction conservative management is preferred.A multidisciplinary,individualized,and specialized approach can improve outcomes;preoperative optimization after risk stratification and careful management are mandatory before *** techniques can also improve *** review the impact of LC on surgical outcome in non-hepatic abdominal surgeries required in this cirrhotic population before,during,and after surgery.
