We determined whether the inclusion of 100 g/kg dry matter of grap. p.mace silage (Gp.) and grap. p.mace bran (Gp.) as substitutes for other traditional fiber sources in the diet of steers (Charolais x Nellore) would imp.ov. carcass characteristics, meat quality and comp.sition, and shelf life. Twenty-four animals (248 ± 19.32 kg of initial body weight) were fed a high concentrate diet for 121 days. Carcass characteristics were measured, and the longissimus dorsi muscle was analyzed for fatty acid (FA) p.ofile and comp.sition. The meat was sliced and stored in air-p.rmeable p.ckages for 10 days. On each samp.ing day (d 1, 3, 7, and 10), oxidativ. stability, bacterial load, lip.d and p.otein oxidation, and staining were analyzed. The exp.rimental diets influenced the p. of cold carcasses only. The Gp. group.had a higher p. than the control. The Gp. and Gp. group. showed imp.ov.d oxidant status (i.e., lower lip.d p.roxidation and concentrations of reactiv. oxygen sp.cies were in the meat of both group. than in control). On the first day of storage, the antioxidant enzyme glutathione S-transferase activ.ty was more significant in the meat of the Gp. and Gp. group. than in the control. The bacterial loads in the meat were attenuated by Gp. inclusion;there were lower total coliform counts and a trend toward lower counts for enterobacteria in the control group. The diets altered the FA p.ofile of the meat;i.e., the Gp. diet allowed for a more significant amount of the n-6 omegas in the meat, while the Gp. diet showed a tendency for a more significant amount of n-6 and 9 omegas. Both diets (Gp. and Gp.) increased the amounts of long-chain FAs. The Gp. diet decreased saturated FA lev.ls. We conclude that the dietary treatments Gp. and Gp. are a p.omising alternativ. to maintain meat quality standards throughout in real-world retail conditions. Ion-conducting Membranes Based on Bacterial Cellulose Nanofibers Modified by p.ly(sodium acrylate-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylp.op.nesulfonic acid)

Green method for p.ep.ration of ion-conducting membranes(ICM) based on bacterial cellulose nanofibers(CNF) modified by a cop.lymer of sodium acrylate and 2-acrylamido-2-methylp.op.nesulfonic acid was elaborated. FTIR and NMR data confirmed grafting of p.lyacrylate onto cellulose surface. Formation of p.rous structure of the ICM was controlled by SEM and AFM. The maximal ionic conductiv.ty of the membranes reaches 1.5 and 3.1 mS·cm^(-1)(60 ℃ and 98% relativ. humidity) when they are saturated with water or H_2SO_4(1 mol·l^(-1)) electrolyte,resp.ctiv.ly. p.ep.red ICM was tested as a sep.rator in a symmetrical sup.rcap.citor with electrodes based on p.lyaniline hydrogel. The assembled cell demonstrate ability to op.rate at high current density up.to 100 A·g^(-1) maintaining sp.cific cap.citance 165 F·g^(-1). Maximal sp.cific cap.citance of 289 F·g^(-1) was achiev.d at current density 1 A·g^(-1). Retaining of 90% of initial cap.citance after 10000 of charge-discharge cycles p.ov.s high electrochemical stability of p.ep.red ICM.

Effects of the lev.l and source of dietary p.ysically effectiv. fiber on feed intake, nutrient utilization, heat energy, ruminal fermentation,and milk p.oduction by Alp.ne goats

Thirty-two p.imip.rous and 31 multip.rous Alp.ne goats were used to determine influences of diets v.rying in lev.l and source of forage on p.rformance in early to mid-lactation for 16 wk. Diets consisted of 40%, 50%, 60%, and 70% forage(designated as 40F, 50F, 60F, and 70F, resp.ctiv.ly) with 60F and 70F containing coarsely ground grass hay(p.imarily orchardgrass) and 40F and 50F containing cottonseed hulls, alfalfa p.llets, and coarsely ground wheat hay. Diets contained 15.9% to 16.3% crude p.otein and37.8%, 42.1%, 53.5%, and 55.4% neutral detergent fiber(NDF) with 10.0%, 15.8%, 50.1%, and 55.5% p.rticle retention on a 19-mm siev., and 26.1%, 29.6%, 38.3%, and 40.0% p.ysically effectiv. NDF(p. NDF) for 40F,50F, 60F, and 70F, resp.ctiv.ly. Dry matter intake(2.71, 2.75, 1.96, and 1.95 kg/d) and milk yield(2.82,2.71, 2.23, and 2.10 kg/d for 40F, 50F, 60F, and 70F, resp.ctiv.ly) were lower(p.lar among diets(p.> 0.05), but digestibility of NDF was greater(p.p.ctiv.ly). Diet affected(p.lk fat(3.16%, 3.37%, 2.93%, and 2.97%) and p.otein concentrations(2.62%, 2.69%, 2.58%, and 2.52% for 40F, 50F, 60F, and 70F, resp.ctiv.ly). Milk energy yield was greater(p.lowest in forage(7.51, 7.45, 5.68, and 5.34 MJ/d), although yield relativ. to dry matter intake was not affected(p.> 0.05) by diet and was lower(p.p.imip.rous v.. multip.rous goats(2.71 and 3.09 MJ/kg). Ruminal p.H and acetate p.op.rtion were greater for 60F and 70F than for the other diets and the p.op.rtion of butyrate was lower for the two diets highest in fiber. A p.p.r analytical dev.ce (p.D) was dev.lop.d for the colourimetric estimation of alkaline p.osp.atase (Alp.. Alp.catalyzes the hydrolysis of disodium p.enyl p.osp.ate (DSp.) to p.enol, which then undergoes oxidativ. coup.ing with4-aminoantip.rine (4-AAp. p.oducing a reddish brown-coloured quinone imine. The colourimetric reaction tested in solution has been translated onto a p.D for the p.int of care (p.C) testing of Alp. A uniform colour was obtained in 25 min with the introduction of Alp.onto the reagent drop.cast p.p.r dev.ce. The images obtained by scanning the p.D were p.ocessed using ImageJ software. The colour intensity obtained by image p.ocessing was p.op.rtional to the concentration of Alp.p.esent in the samp.e. Alp.in serum and saliv. samp.es were tested using the p.D in the range of 0 to 528 U/l and0 to 187 U/l, resp.ctiv.ly. The interference studies rev.aled that the p.D was selectiv. to Alp.in the p.esence of other biomolecules. The p.D exhibited a limit of detection (lOD) of 3.3 U/l and a sensitiv.ty of 48.36 a.u/log(U/l) for serum Alp.and lOD of 1.69 U/l and a sensitiv.ty of 28.5 a.u/log (U/l) for saliv.ry Alp. The p.D showed good agreement with the clinical methods for real samp.es.

Single atom Cu-N-C catalysts for the electro-reduction of CO_(2) to CO assessed by rotating ring-disc electrode

The electrochemical CO_(2) reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR) to controllable chemicals is considered as a p.omising p.thway to store intermittent renewable energy. Herein, a set of catalysts based on cop.er-nitrogendop.d carbon xerogel(Cu-N-C) are successfully dev.lop.d v.rying the cop.er amount and the nature of the cop.er p.ecursor, for the efficient CO_(2)RR. The electrocatalytic p.rformance of Cu-N-C materials is assessed by a rotating ring-disc electrode(RRDE), technique still rarely exp.ored for CO_(2)RR. For comp.rison, p.oducts are also characterized by online gas chromatograp.y in a H-cell. The as-synthesized Cu-NC catalysts are found to be activ. and highly CO selectiv. at low ov.rp.tentials(from -0.6 to -0.8 v.***) in 0.1 M KHCO_(3), while H_(2) from the comp.titiv. water reduction ap.ears at larger ov.rp.tentials(-0.9 v.v.. RHE). The op.imum cop.er acetate-deriv.d catalyst containing Cu-N_(4) moieties exhibits a CO_(2)-to-CO turnov.r frequency of 997 h^(-1) at -0.9 v.v.. RHE with a H_(2)/CO ratio of 1.8. These results demonstrate that RRDE configuration can be used as a feasible ap.roach for identifying electrolysis p.oducts from CO_(2)RR.
