An attempt was made to improve the adsorption capability of the normal sand to be used as adsorbent for phenol and cadmium This has been done by producing a coated sand media. The coating process was done using emulsion asphalt to convert the normal sand to carbonated sand by using chemical treatment with sulfuric acid. The production process involves mixing of the sand with asphalt and an acid, then subjecting the mix to a heating process. Different mixing ratios, heating temperatures and times （activation times） were tried to obtain the optimum conditions at which the highest removal efficiency is obtained. Three types of acids were tried acetic acid, phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. It was found that the sulfuric acid requires the lowest activation time, hence selected for the production. The removal efficiency of the produced media was significantly affected by the temperature, mixing ratio and activation heating time. The results show that, the optimum conditions for the production process are 350 , （1：2：3）（Asphalt/acid/sand） and 52 min for temperature, mixing ratio and activation heating time respectively. The final product was tested and found effective as an adsorbent media for phenol and cadmium. The removal efficiencies of these two pollutants in a batch adsorber were found 82.42% and 86.67%, respectively. The X-R diffraction and FTIR spectra tests had proved this media as an adsorbent.

BACKGROUND The genetic backgrounds of diabetic kidney disease(DKD)and end-stage kidney disease(ESKD)have not been fully *** To examine the individual and cumulative effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)previously associated with DKD on the risk for ESKD of diabetic etiology and to determine if any associations observed were specific for *** Fourteen SNPs were genotyped in hemodialyzed 136 patients with diabetic ESKD(DKD group)and 121 patients with non-diabetic ESKD(NDKD group).Patients were also re-classified on the basis of the primary cause of chronic kidney disease(CKD).The distribution of alleles was compared between diabetic and nondiabetic groups as well as between different *** weighted multilocus genetic risk score(GRS)was calculated to estimate the cumulative risk conferred by all *** GRS distribution was then compared between the DKD and NDKD groups as well as in the groups according to the primary cause of *** One SNP(rs841853;SLC2A1)showed a nominal association with DKD(P=0.048;P>0.05 after Bonferroni correction).The GRS was higher in the DKD group(0.615±0.260)than in the NDKD group(0.590±0.253),but the difference was not significant(P=0.46).The analysis of associations between GRS and individual factors did not show any significant ***,the GRS was significantly higher in patients with glomerular disease than in those with tubulointerstitial disease(P=0.014)and in those with a combined group(tubulointerstitial,vascular,and cystic and congenital disease)(P=0.018).CONCLUSION Our results suggest that selected SNPs that were previously associated with DKD may not be specific for DKD and may confer risk for CKD of different etiology,particularly those affecting renal glomeruli.

The issue of bonding formation in liquid metal/open-celled carbon foam(C_(of))systems was examined,taking into account the practical aspects of the synthesis of a new type of Mg-C metal material *** problem is complex due to the strong oxidation and intense evaporation of liquid magnesium,as well as the 3D geometry of the carbon component,where metal transport occurred through the foam cells’*** experiments performed at 700℃ in ceramic crucibles showed that spontaneous carbon foam infiltration by liquid metal is impossible under the applied conditions,either in an air atmosphere coupled with flux protection or under argon *** tests performed in a UHV chamber filled with static pure Ar by a sessile drop method,coupled with non-contact heating and capillary purification at a test temperature of 700℃ directly in the UHV chamber,showed non-wetting behavior of the Mg/C_(of)couple with a correspondingly high contact angle of about 135°.The graphite capillary was then moved down,the liquid drop being slightly pressed into the foam,but these changes did not induce effective foam *** the short contact time for the sessile drop test under an argon atmosphere,SEM+WDS analysis of the solidified Mg/C_(of)couple revealed the formation of an MgO interlayer at the interface,with a thickness of approx.1μ*** experimentally demonstrated presence of oxygen in the carbon foam sample,both before and after its contact with magnesium,points to oxide-type bonding being established between Mg and C_(of).This observation is in a good agreement with previous reports on the interface characterization of magnesium matrix composites reinforced with glassy carbon materials and carbon fibers by stir casting and pressure *** on the findings of this study,a general structural scheme of the bonding process between carbon foam and liquid magnesium,as an important stage in the syntheses of Mg-C composites,was proposed.

A novel metal matrix composites(MMC)with Mg matrix reinforced with natural filler in the form of Didymosphenia geminata frustules(algae with distinctive siliceous shells)are presented in this *** plasma sintering(PPS)was used to manufacture Mg-based composites with 1,5 and 10 vol.%ceramic *** a reference,pure Mg was *** results show that the addition of 1 vol.%Didymosphenia geminata frustules to the Mg matrix increases its corrosion resistance by supporting passivation reactions,and do not affect the morphology of L929 *** of 5 vol.%the filler does not cause cytotoxic effects,but it supports microgalvanic reactions leading to the greater corrosion *** content than 5 vol.%the filler causes significant microgalvanic corrosion,as well as increases cytotoxicity due to the greater micro-galvanic effect of the composites containing 10 and 15 vol.%*** results of contact angle measurements show the hydrophilic character of the investigated materials,with slightly increase in numerical values with addition of amount of ceramic *** addition of Didymosphenia geminata frustules causes changes in a thermo-elastic properties such as mean apparent value of coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE)and thermal conductivity(λ).The addition of siliceous reinforcement resulted in a linear decrease of CTE and reduction in thermal conductivity over the entire temperature *** the increasing addition of Didymosphenia geminata frustules,an increase in strength with a decrease in compressive strain is *** all composites an increase in microhardness was *** results clearly indicate that filler in the form of Didymosphenia geminata frustules may significantly change the most important properties of pure Mg,indicating its wide potential in the application of Mg-based composites with a special focus on biomedical use.

In Africa, each year, there are estimated to be more than 91 million cases of salmonellosis and 137,000 cases of death. The problem of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella strains is a threat to public health. The objective of this study is to evaluate the antibiotic resistance profile of Salmonella strains isolated in biological products analyzed at the National Laboratory of Clinical Biology and Public Health (NLCBPH) in Bangui. This is, therefore, a cross-sectional study with a descriptive aim, running from January to December 2022. It focused on the strains of Salmonella isolated and identified in stools, urines, and blood samples. For each strain of Salmonella isolated, an antibiogram was carried out following the recommendations of the French Society of Microbiology (CASFM, 2022). A total of 93 strains of Salmonella have been recorded. The age group 0 - 9 years was 29% and that of >50 years was 11%. The median age of patients was 30 years with a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 78 years. The female gender was more represented at 52.69% than the male gender at 47.31%, i.e. a sex ratio of 0.89 (M/F). Salmonella strains were much more isolated in stools at 62% followed by urines at 29% and blood at 6%. Salmonella arizonae strains were more represented with 52%. Salmonella strains have a resistance rate to Tetracycline of 62.37% followed by Penicillins of 50%. The rate of multi-antibiotic resistance of the Salmonella strains isolated represented 48.38%. Salmonella spp. strains were multi-resistant at 58.69% followed by Salmonella arizonae strains at 47.91%. There is a significant association between the different families of antibiotics and Salmonella strains (p < 0.05). According to the results obtained, Penicillins, Phenicoles, and Cyclins had a high rate of resistance on Salmonella strains. No strain-producing Broad Spectrum Beta-lactamase has been isolated. A prospective and analytical study was carried out from January 2017 to Decem-ber 2022, at the National Laboratory of Clinical Biology and Public Health (LNBCSP) in Bangui. 352 samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were confirmed out of 2065, coming from the four hospitals in Bangui. This study aimed to evalu-ate the evolution of antibiotic sensitivity to strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae. CSF had been collected from patients who presented with meningeal syndromes. Based on the leukocyte count (White blood cells ≥ 5 mm3), an aliquot was trans-ferred to trans-isolate medium and sent to the LNBCSP for confirmatory testing, culture and determination of antibiotic sensitivity. The antibiotic sensitivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains was tested according to the methods recom-mended by the Antibiogram Committee of the French Society of Microbiology. The data collected was entered into Excel 2010 to be analyzed with Epi Info 7.2. Ficher’s exact test, chi2 at the 5% threshold (p < 0.05) was used to compare pro-portions and analyze associations between variables. The average sensitivity rate to β-lactams was 74.43%. The sensitivity rate of Fluoroquinolones was 54.54%. That of levofloxacin was 87%. The average rate of sensitivity to β-lactams for the age group under 5 years old was 79.25%. That of fluoroquinolones was 52.59%. Levofloxacin had 90.37%. The average sensitivity rate to β-lactams for the age group over 5 years old was 76.03%. Fluoroquinolones had 45.16%. Levofloxacin had 69.58%. The average sensitivity rate to β-lactams for males was 76.68%. Fluoroquinolones had 54.26%. That of levofloxacin was 83.40%. The sensitivity rate to β-lactams for females was 74.41%. That of fluoroquinolones was 51.16%. Levofloxacin had 67.44%. Cyclins had 28.68%. Goals: The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic resistance profile of serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains circulating in Bangui. Methodology: A prospective and analytical analysis was carried out at the National Laboratory of Clinical Biology and Public Health from 2017 to 2022. The strains came from our study on the contribution to the study of antibiotic sensitivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains. The multiplex PCR test was used for its cost-effectiveness in terms of amplifiers which can be purified in order to be sequenced. It also makes it possible to detect several germs as well as their serotypes. For a PCR reaction, several elements are involved in the reaction medium or Master Mix. These are the desoxyribonucleotides (dNTPs), the magnesium ions (MgCl2) and the primers. A set of 14 primers divided into 3 classes were used. Class 1 primers served as an internal control by targeting the cpsA gene. It is a highly conserved gene found in capsular loci characterized to date. The primers of the second class were used to target specific serotypes by specific reactions (out of six possibilities). The group reaction was carried out using the primers of the third class in order to carry out an initial screening of the samples and to classify the pneumococcal isolates. Related serotypes were grouped based on the amplification of common genes. Using the technique of electrophoresis on agarose gel and an ultraviolet radiation device, the migration bands are then visualized and analyzed. The data collected had been entered into Excel 2010 and analyzed with Epi info 7. The exact Fischer chi2 test at the 5% threshold, the relative risk and its 95% confidence interval were used to compare the proportions and determine the associations. Results: 187 antibiotic-resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae were collected.
