Climate Change and Livelihood Vulnerability of the Local Population on Sagar Island, India

This paper attempts to assess the vulnerability to climate change of human communities in selected mouzas of Sagar Island,South 24 Parganas District of India. A primary household survey has been conducted to collect data on socio-demographic profile, livelihood strategy, health, food, water, social network, natural disaster and climate variation indicators, were selected for Livelihood Vulnerability Index(LVI) and Livelihood Vulnerability Index-Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(LVI-IPCC) analyses to measure and compare the vulnerability of mouzas(administrative unit) currently suffering from frequent flooding, coastal erosion and embankment breaching on an annual basis. Secondary data collected from the Indian Meteorological Department, the Water Resources Information System of India and the Global Sea Level Observing System have been used to identify dynamics of climate change by employing statistical and Geographic Information System(GIS) techniques. A GPS survey has been conducted to identify locations of embankment breaching, and satellite images obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and U.S. Geological Survey(NASA USGS) Government website have been applied to shoreline and land use change detection, using a supervised maximum likelihood classification. The results indicate that the study area has experienced increasing temperature, changing precipitation patterns, rise in sea level, higher storm surges, shoreline change, constant land loss, embankment breaching and changing land use, which have had impact on vulnerability, particularly of poorer people. The LVI(0.48 to 0.68) and LVI-IPCC(0.04 to 0.14) scores suggest that the populations of Dhablat, Bankimnagar, Sumatinagar, Muri Ganga and Sibpur mouzas are highly vulnerable(LVI scores of 0.60 to 0.68 and LVI-IPCC scores of 0.11 to 0.14) to climate change both because the communities are more exposed to it, and because poor access to food, health facilities and water makes them

Tree biomass plays a key role in sustainable management by providing different aspects of ecosystem. Estimation of above ground biomass by non-destructive means requires the dex;elopment of allometric equations. Most researchers used DBH （diameter at breast height） and TH （total height） to develop allometric equation for a tree. Very few spe- cies-specific allometric equations are currently available for shrubs to estimate of biomass from measured plant attributes. Therefore, we used some of readily measurable variables to develop allometric equations such as girth at collar-height （GcH） and height of girth measuring point （GMH） with total height （TH） for A. rotundifolia, a mangrove species of Sundarbans of Bangladesh, as it is too dwarf to take DBH and too ir- regular in base to take Girth at a fixed height. Linear, non-linear and logarithmic regression techniques were tried to determine the best re- gression model to estimate the above-ground biomass of stem, branch and leaf. A total of 186 regression equations were generated from the combination of independent variables. Best fit regression equations were determined by examining co-efficient of determination （R：）, co-efficient of variation （Cv）, mean-square of the error （Ms^r）, residual mean error （Rmax）, and F-value. Multiple linear regression models showed more efficient over other types of regression equation. The performance of regression equations was increased by inclusion of GMn as an independ- ent variable along with total height and GCH.

Capsaicin(trans-8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide) is the main component in hot peppers, including red chili peppers, alapenos, and habanero, belonging to the genus Capsicum. Capsaicin is a potent antioxidant that interferes with free radical activities. In the present study, the possible protective effect of capsaicin was studied against methyl methanesulphonate(MMS) induced toxicity in third instar larvae of transgenic Drosophila melanogaster(hsp70-lacZ)Bg^9. The third instar was allowed to feed on the diet having different doses of capsaicin and MMS separately and in combination. The results suggested that the exposure of third instar larvae to the diet having MMS alone showed significant hsp70 expression as well as tissue DNA and oxidative damage, whereas the larvae feed on the diet having MMS and capsaicin showed a decrease in the toxic effects for 48-h of exposure. In conclusion, capsaicin showed a dose-dependent decrease in the toxic effects induced by MMS in the third instar larvae of transgenic Drosophila melanogaster.

In the present study,we studied the effect of Genistein against the hepatotoxicity induced by N-nitrosodiethylamine（NDEA）.NDEA is present in almost all kinds of food stuff and has been reported to be a *** male rats were exposed to NDEA（0.1 mg/mL） dissolved in drinking water separately and along with 25,50,100 mg/mL of Genistein for 21 *** activities of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase（SGOT）,serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase（SGPT）.alkaline phosphatase（ALP） and lactate dehydrogenase（LDH） were measured in blood *** peroxidation,protein carbonyl content,micronucleus frequency and DNA damage（Comet assay） were performed on rat *** results of the study reveal that the treatment of NDEA along with Genistein showed a significant dose-dependent decrease in the levels of blood serum enzymes i.e.,SGOT,SGPT,ALP and LDH（P〈0.05）.The HE staining of histological sections of the liver also revealed a protective effect of Genistein.A significant dose-dependent reduction in the lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl content was observed in rats exposed to NDEA（0.1 mg/mL） along with Genistein（P〈0.05）.The results obtained for the comet assay in rat hepatocytes showed a significant dose-dependent decrease in the mean tail length（P〈0.05）.Thus the present study supports the hepatoprotective role of Genistein.

Nutrient dynamics associated with leaf litter decomposition of three agroforestry tree species (Azadirachta indica, Dalbergia sissoo, and Melia azedarach) of Bangladesh

Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Dalbergia, sissoo Roxb., and Melia azedarach L. are little studied species in nutrient return capabilities from leaf litter decomposition to maintenance of the soil fertility despite their importance in agroforestry practices of Bangladesh. A leaf litter decomposition experiment was conducted using a litterbag teeh7 nique to assess the nutrient reaun efficiency of these species. The de- composition rate of leaf litter was highest for M. azedarach and lowest for D. sissoo. Rainfall and temperature of study sites showed a significant （p〈0.05） positive relationship with the rate of leaf litter decomposition. The highest decay constant was observed for M. azedarach （6.67）. Nitrogen and Phosphorus concentration in leaf litter showed a decreased trend sharply at the end of the first month, whereas rapid decrease of Potassium concentration was reported within 10 days. Conversely, higher concentration of nutrient was observed at the later stages of decomposition. All three species showed a similar pattern of nutrient release （K 〉 N 〉 P） during the decomposition process of leaf litter. Among the studied species, D. sissoo was best in terms of N and P return and A. indica was best in terms of K return.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of Ocimum sanctum leaf extract on the dietary supplementation in the transgenic Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease. METHOD: The effect of Ocimum sanctum leaf extract was studied on the transgenic Drosophila model of flies expressing normal human alpha synuclein(h-αs) in the neurons. O. sanctum extract at final concentrations of 0.042 8 × 10-4, 0.87 × 10-4, and 1.85 × 10-4 g·mL-1 of diet were established and the flies were allowed to feed for 21 days. The climbing assay and lipid peroxidation were taken as parameters for the study. RESULTS: The supplementation of O. sanctum extract showed a dose-dependent significant delay in the loss of climbing ability and reduction in oxidative stress in the brain of PD model flies. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study showed that the O. sanctum extract is potent in reducing the PD symptoms in transgenic Drosophila model.

Internal Jugular Vein Graft after Inadvertent Severing of the Internal Carotid Artery during Carotid Endarterectomy and an Urgent Re-Exploration for Immediate Post-Operative Wound Site Bleeding: A Case Report

Carotid endarterectomy is a well-established treatment for preventing stroke in selected patients. Although there is debate over whether patch angioplasty or primary closure should be used to reconstruct the bifurcation after carotid endarterectomy, there is growing evidence in the literature in favor of patch angioplasty. When compared to primary closure, patch angioplasty during conventional carotid endarterectomy is suggested to lower the incidence of restenosis and recurrent ipsilateral stroke. Various materials have been used as a patch in this procedure, including the saphenous vein, synthetic patches, or less frequently, an internal jugular vein patch where extensive narrowing of the internal carotid artery is evident. In our case, we used an internal jugular vein graft after inadvertent severing the internal carotid artery (ICA) during carotid endarterectomy after the failure of reconstruction with a saphenous vein patch. We also encountered immediate postoperative reactionary hemorrhage following anesthetic reversal, necessitating an urgent re-exploration. The purpose of this case report is neither an attempt to suggest all patients need angioplasty nor to state that an internal jugular vein patch or graft is superior to synthetic material or saphenous veins;rather, it is an attempt to emphasize a potentially effective rescue way to reconstruct inadvertent extensive vascular injury during carotid endarterectomy.

Applicability of semi-destructive method to derive allometric model for estimating aboveground biomass and carbon stock in the Hill zone of Bangladesh

Biomass estimation using allometric models is a nondestructive and popular *** of an allometric model can influence the accuracy of biomass *** Forest Department initiated a nationwide forest inventory to assess biomass and carbon stocks in trees and *** relationship between carbon storage and sequestration in a forest has implications for climate change mitigation in terms of the carbon sink in *** part of the national forest inventory,we aimed to derive multi-species biomass models for the hill zone of Bangladesh and to determine the carbon concentration in tree components(leaves,branches,bark and stem).In total,175 trees of 14 species were sampled and a semi-destructive method was used to develop a biomass model,which included development of smaller branch(base dia<7 cm)biomass allometry and volume estimation of bigger branches and *** best model of leaf,branches,and bark showed lower values for adjusted R2(0.3152-0.8043)and model efficiency(0.436-0.643),hence these models were not recommended to estimate *** best fit model of stem and total aboveground biomass(TAGB)showed higher model efficiency 0.948 and 0.837,respectively,and this model was recommended for estimation of tree biomass for the hill zone of *** best fit allometric biomass model for stem was Ln(Stem)=-10.7248+1.6094*Ln(D)+1.323*Ln(H)+1.1469*Ln(W);the best fit model for TAGB was Ln(TAGB)=-6.6937+0.809*Ln(D^2*H*W),where DBH=Diameter at Breast Height,H=Total Height,W=Wood *** two most frequently used pan-tropical biomass models showed lower model efficiency(0.667 to 0.697)compared to our derived TAGB *** best fit TAGB model proved applicable for accurate estimation of TAGB for the hill zone of *** concentration varied significantly(p<0.05)by species and tree *** concentration(48-49%)of carbon was recorded in the tree stem.

Appropriateness of indication and diagnostic yield of colonoscopy: First report based on the 2000 guidelines of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

AIM: To assess the appropriateness of referrals and to determine the diagnostic yield of colonoscopy according to the 2000 guidelines of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).METHODS: A total of 736 consecutive patients (415males, 321 females; mean age 43.6±16.6 years)undergoing colonoscopy during October 2001-March2002 Were prospectively enrolled in the study. The 2000ASGE guidelines were used to assess the appropriateness of the indications for the procedure. Diagnostic yield was defined as the ratio between significant findings detected on colonoscopy and the total number of procedures performed for that ***: The large majority (64%) of patients had colonoscopy for an indication that was considered'generally indicated'; it was 'generally not indicated' for20%, and it was 'not listed' for 16% in the *** diagnostic yield of colonoscopy was highest for the 'generally indicated' (38%) followed by 'not listed'(13%) and 'generally not indicated' (5%) *** the multivariable analysis, the diagnostic yield was independently associated with the appropriateness of indication that was 'generally indicated' (odds ratio=12.3) and referrals by gastroenterologist (odds ratio = 1.9).CONCLUSION: There is a high likelihood of inappropriate referrals for colonoscopy in an open-access endoscopy system. The diagnostic yield of the procedure is dependent on the appropriateness of indication and referring physician's specialty. Certain indications 'not listed' in the guidelines have an intermediate diagnostic yield and further studies are required to evaluate whether they should be included in future revisions of the ASGE guidelines.
