Experimental and computational chemical studies on the cationic furanylnicotinamidines as novel corrosion inhibitors in aqueous solutions

The corrosion inhibition action of three newly synthesized furanylnicotinamidine derivatives namely: 6-[5-{4(dimethylamino)phenyl}furan-2-yl]nicotinamidine(mA-1256), 6-[5-(4-chlorophenyl)furan-2-yl]nicotinamidine(mA-1266), and 6-[5-{4-(dimethylamino)phenyl}furan-2-yl]nicotinonitrile(mA-1250) on carbon steel(C-steel) was investigated in 1.0 mol·L-1 HCl solution by weight loss(WL), potentiodynamic polarization(PP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), and electrochemical frequency modulation(EFm)techniques. morphological analysis was performed on the uninhibited and inhibited C-steel using atomic force microscope(AFm) and Infrared Spectroscopy(ATR-IR) methods. The effect of temperature was studied and discussed. Inspection of experimental results revealed that the inhibition efficiency(IE) increases with the incremental addition of inhibitors and with elevating the temperature of the acid media. The adsorption of furanylnicotinamidine derivatives on C-steel follows Temkin’s isotherm. PP studies indicated that the investigated compounds act as mixed-type inhibitors and showed that p-dimethylaminophenyl furanylnicotinamidine derivative(mA-1256) was the most efficient inhibitor among the other studied derivatives with IE reached(95%)at 21 × 10-6 mol·L-1. mA-1266 is highly soluble in aqueous solution and has non-toxicity profile with LC50 N 37 mg·L-1. Thus, mA-1266 can be a promising green corrosion inhibitor candidate with IE N 91% at 21× 10-6 mol·L-1. The experiments were coupled with computational chemical theories such as quantum chemical and molecular dynamic methods. Solute transport and geochemical modeling of the coastal quaternary aquifer, Delta Dahab Basin, South Sinai, Egypt

The wadi dahab delta is in a dry, arid coastal zone within Egypt’s south Sinai Peninsula’s eastern portion. The primary water source is the Quaternary coastal alluvial aquifer. The groundwater salinity varies from 890to 8213 mg/L, with a mean value of 3417 mg/L. The dissolved major ions have been used to calculate the seawater mixing index(SWmI) using a linear equation that discriminates the groundwater mostly affected by water–rock interaction(SWmI 1>) and other samples mixed with Seawater(SWmI mposition of groundwater for specifically chosen groundwater samples ranges from-0.645‰ to +5.212‰ for δ^(18)O and from-9.582‰ to + 22.778‰ for δ^(2)H, where the seawater represented by a Red Sea water sample(δ^(18)O + 1.64‰-δ^(2)H + 9.80‰) and reject brine water are considerably enriched the isotopic groundwater values. The geochemical NETPATH model constrained by the dissolved significant ions, isotopes, and the rock aquifer forming minerals as phases indicate the mixing percent with the seawater ranges from 9% to 97% of seawater from 91% to 3% of original recharge water. According to the SEAWAT 3-D flow models, seawater has penetrated the Northeastern Dahab delta aquifer, with the intrusion zone extending1500 m inland. The salt dissolution, upwelling of saline water, recharge from the upstream mountain block, and seawater encroachment are the primary aspects contributing to the deterioration of groundwater quality. These findings may have significance for effective groundwater withdrawal management in arid locations worldwide with similar hydrogeological systems.

Evaluation of Some Insulated Greases Prepared from Rubber and Bitumen Thickeners

The wax gel grease (S0) was prepared from a mixture of 2.3:1 base oil blend (base oil grade 260/290, transformer oil), and microcrystalline wax in the presence of 0.1% - 2% of polyoxyethylene sorption nano-palmitate as antioxidant and 2,2 methylene bis (4-methyle-6-tertiary butyl phenol) as anticorrosion. It was found that the prepared Wax gel grease has inconvenient physico-chemical and dielectric properties, so in order to improve its physico-chemical properties (viscosity, penetration, dropping point and water resistance) and dielectric Properties (dielectric constant, dielectric loss and volume resistivity), Butyl rubber, isoprene rubber and bitumen were added separately as thickening agents to the prepared wax gel in certain proportion at certain frequency range 1 - 1000 KHz at 35°C. The best dielectric properties were achieved by adding butyl rubber to the prepared wax gel.

Effect of Catharanthus roseus (Vince rosea) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Extracts as Green Corrosion Inhibitors for mild Steel in 1 m HCl

The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by Catharanthus roseus (Vince rosea) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) extracts as green inhibitors in 1 m HCl solutions has been investigated by using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), hydrogen evolution measurements and scanning electron microscope (SEm) techniques. Results obtained show that these investigated compounds are good inhibitors and act as mixed type inhibitors. The inhibition efficiencies increase with increasing inhibitor concentration. The SEm results show the formation of protective film on the mild steel surface in the presence of Catharanthus roseus and Turmeric extracts. The results obtained from different tested techniques are in good agreement.

Electrooxidation of methanol and ethanol on carbon electrodeposited Ni–mgO nanocomposite

Ni–mgO nano‐composites were prepared on carbon anodes by electrodeposition from a nickel Watts bath in the presence of fine mgO reinforcement particles. Their performance as electrocata‐lysts for the oxidation of methanol and ethanol in alkaline medium was investigated and compared with that of carbon coated pure Ni （Ni/C）. The chemical composition, phase structure, and surface morphology of the deposited nano‐composites were studied by energy dispersive X‐ray spectros‐copy, X‐ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Different electrochemi‐cal techniques were used to estimate the catalytic activity of the prepared electrocatalyst anodes, including cyclic voltammetry （CV）, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectros‐copy （EIS）. The Ni/C electrocatalyst alone exhibited remarkably low catalytic activity and poor stability toward the electrooxidation process. The inclusion of mgO significantly promoted the cata‐lytic activity of the Ni catalyst for the alcohol electrooxidation and enhanced its poisoning re‐sistance. The EIS results confirmed those of CV and revealed a lower charge transfer resistance and enhanced roughness for the Ni–mgO/C nano‐composite electrodes compared with those of Ni/C.

Potential role of killer immunoglobulin receptor genes among individuals vaccinated against hepatitis B virus in Lebanon

AImTo explore the role of killer immunoglobulin receptor (KIR) genes in responsiveness or non-responsiveness to vaccination against hepatitis B virus. mETHODSWe recruited 101 voluntary participants between march 2010 and December 2011. Sera samples from vaccinated and non-vaccinated participants were tested for the presence of anti-HBs antibodies as a measure of protection against hepatitis B, hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis B core antibody as indicators of infection by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. KIR gene frequencies were determined by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTSSera samples from 99 participants were tested for the levels of anti-HBs as an indicator of protection (≥ 10 mIU/mL) following vaccination as defined by the World Health Organization international reference standard. Among the vaccinated participants, 47% (35/74) had anti-HBs titers above 100 mIU/mL, 22% (16/74) had anti-HBs ranging between 10-100 mIU/mL, and 20% (15/74) had values of less than 10 mIU/mL. We report the lack of significant association between the number of vaccine dosages and the titer of antibodies among our vaccinated participants. The inhibitory KIR2DL1, KIR2DL4, KIR3DL1, KIR3DL2, and KIR3DL were detected in more than 95%, whereas KIR2DL2, KIR2DL3, KIR2DL5 (KR2DL5A and KIR2DL5B) were expressed in 56%, 84% and 42% (25% and 29%) of participants, respectively. The observed frequency of the activating KIR genes ranged between 35% and 55% except for KIR2DS4, detected in 95% of the study participants (40.6% 2DS4*001/002; 82.2% 2DS4*003/007). KIR2DP1 pseudogene was detected in 99% of our participants, whereas KIR3DP*001/02/04 and KIR3DP1*003 had frequencies of 17% and 100%, respectively. No association between the frequency of KIR genes and anti-HBs antibodies was detected. Functional evaluation of the filtering bleb by ultrasound biomicroscopy after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C

AIm： To study the role of ultrasound biomicroscopy（UBm） in the assessment of the bleb function after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C（mmC）. mETHODS： This was a cross-sectional study including all cases had undergone trabeculectomy with mmC 0.2 mg/mL for 3 min. Participants were recruited from the follow-up cases at Department of Ophthalmology, Tanta University in the period from August 2015 to August 2016. Full history taking and ophthalmological examination were performed. Intraocular pressure（IOP） was measured using Goldmann applanation tonometry and the history of prescribed postoperative antiglaucoma medications was recorded. Accordingly, the trabeculectomy blebs were divided clinically into successful blebs when the IOP post-operative was ≤18 mmHg without medications. Scanning examination of the filtering bleb using UBm examination was performed at the period from 2 to 36 mo after trabeculectomy（13.6±9.7 m o）. RESULTS： This study included 33 trabeculectomy filtering blebs of 25 patients（9 males and 16 females）. The mean age of patients was 53.2±14.2 y（range 25-71y）. We had 20 eyes with complete success, 9 eyes with qualified success, and 4 eyes with failure after trabeculectomy with mmC. The blebs were classified into successful blebs（IOP ≤18 mmHg without antiglaucoma medications）, others were classified into qualified successful and failed blebs. There was a significant correlation between certain UBm findings（intra-bleb reflectivity, draining sub-scleral tract, bleb height, and intrableb fluid cysts） and cases with different grades of clinical functional success（P〈0.01）.CONCLUSION： UBm is an objective tool in the functional assessment of the post-trabeculectomy filtering bleb through a significant correlation between certain UBm parameters and the different grades of clinical functional success.
