Methylsulfonylmethane suppresses hepatic tumor development through activation of apoptosis

AIM:To investigate the effect of methylsulfonylmethane(MSM), recently reported to have anti-cancer effects, in liver cancer cells and transgenic mice. METHODS: Three liver cancer cell lines, HepG2, Huh7-Mock and Huh7-H-rasG12V, were used. Cell growth was measured by Cell Counting Kit-8 and soft agar assay. Western blot analysis was used to detect caspases, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase(PARP), and B-cell lymphoma2(Bcl-2) expressions. For in vivo study, we administered MSM to H-ras12V transgenic mice for 3 mo. RESUlTS: MSM decreased the growth of HepG2, Huh7-Mock and Huh7-H-rasG12V cells in a dose-dependent manner. That was correlated with significantly increased apoptosis and reduced cell numbers in MSM treated cells. Cleaved caspase-8, cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved PARP were remarkably increased in the liver cancer cells treated with 500 mmol/l of MSM; however, Bcl-2 was slightly decreased in 500 mmol/l. liver tumor development was greatly inhibited in the H-ras12V transgenic mice treated with MSM, compared to control, by showing reduced tumor size and number. Cleaved PARP was significantly increased in non-tumor treated with MSM compared to control. CONClUSION: liver injury was also significantly attenuated in the mice treated with MSM. Taken together, all the results suggest that MSM has anti-cancer effects through inducing apoptosis in liver cancer.

The application of phosphorus(P)to soil can increase its availability to plants and alter P fractions in annual and perennial organs of Cordia *** a portion of P accumulates in perennial organs in organic fractions it can be used in the next growth season,possibly decreasing plant dependence on P derived from soil ***,if P is preferentially accumulated in inorganic fractions in annual organs,plants will be more dependent on phosphate *** study aimed to evaluate the distribution of P fractions in organs of *** grown on sandy soil treated with 120 and 360 kg P2O5 ha^(−1).The control was a zero *** 24 months following fertilization,*** seedlings were cut and separated into leaves,branches,stems and roots,dried,ground and subjected to chemical fractionation of P,which estimates fractions of total soluble P,soluble inorganic and organic P,lipid P,P associated ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid,and residual P.P in annual organs,as leaves,accumulated preferentially in the soluble inorganic fraction in both *** perennial organs such as stems and branches,P accumulated preferentially in the soluble organic *** application of 300%of the recommended dosage(360 kg P2O5 ha^(−1))promoted the accumulation of P in soluble organic fractions which may contribute to annual growth the following season and be a strategy to reduce the dependence of 2-year-old stands on soil-derived P and on fertilizers.

Selecting and applying quantification models for ecosystem services to forest ecosystems in South Korea

There is growing interest in using ecosystem services to aid development of management strategies that target sustainability and enhance ecosystem support to humans. Challenges remain in the search for methods and indicators that can quantify ecosystem services using metrics that are meaningful in light of their high priorities. We developed a framework to link ecosystems to human wellbeing based on a stepwise approach. We evaluated prospective models in terms of their capacity to quantify national ecosystem services of forests. The most applicable models were subsequently used to quantify ecosystem services. The Korea Forest Research Institute model sat- isfied all criteria in its first practical use. A total of 12 key ecosystem services were identified. For our case study, we quantified four ecosystem functions, viz. water storage capacity in forest soil for water storage service, reduced suspended sediment for water purification service, reduced soil erosion for landslide prevention service, and reduced sediment yield for sediment regulation service. Water storage capacity in forest soil was estimated at 2142 t/ha, and reduced suspended sediment was estimated at 608 kg/ ha. Reduced soil erosion was estimated at 77 m^3/ha, and reduced sediment yield was estimated at 285 m^3/ha. These results were similar to those reported by previous studies. Mapped results revealed hotspots of ecosystem services around protected areas that were particularly rich in bio- diversity. In addition, the proposed framework illustrated that quantification of ecosystem services could be sup- ported by the spatial flow of ecosystem services. However, our approach did not address challenges faced when quantifying connections between ecosystem indicators and actual benefits of services described.

The rising claim for more environmental friendly and healthy agriculture is a strong incentive to find alternative strategies to replace the use of mineral fertilizer and pesticide. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), a main component of soil microbiota, represent a promising tool as providers of key ecological services. The present work represented one of the first attempts to study, under a morphological and molecular point of view, the AMF communities associated to some strategic crops in Vietnam. The findings about the AMF morphotypes dominant in different crop systems could be a starting point for the development of well performing and adapted inocula suitable for the application in field.

依据团簇＋连接原子模型设计具有高玻璃形成能力的Fe-B-Si—Ta软磁块体非晶合金，以共晶点Fe83B17对应的共晶相Fe2B为基础．根据最大径向原子数密度和孤立度原则，得到以B为心的[B-B2Fe8】主团簇，结合理想非晶合金团簇式的电子浓度判据，构建出Fe-B二元非晶合金的理想团簇式[B—B2Fe8]Fe．为提升Fe—B二元合金的非晶形成能力，选择与Fe具有较大负混合焓的Si替代[B—B2Fe8]团簇的中心原子B，得到Fe-B-Si三元非晶合金的理想团簇式[Si—B2Fes]Fe．由于Ta与B和Si间具有较大的负混合焓，进一步以Ta替代[Si—B2Fe8]Fe团簇式中壳层位置的Fe原子，设计出[Si—B2Fe8-xTax]Fe四元非晶系列成分．结果表明，[Si-B2Fe8-xTax]Fe在x=0．4～0．7成分处均可形成直径为1．0min的非晶合金棒．其中，[Si—B2Fe7.4Ta0.6]Fe合金的非晶形成能力最佳，其非晶样品的约化玻璃转变温度磊为0．584，玻璃转变温度正为856K，过冷液相区宽度△Tx达33K．[Si-B2Fe8-xTax]Fe（x=0．4～0．7）块体非晶合金的Vickers硬度Hv随Ta的添加从1117HV（F0．4）上升到1154HV（x=0．7）．[Si—B2Fe7.6Ta0.4]Fe非晶合金具有良好的室温软磁性能，其饱和磁化强度Bs为1．37T,矫顽Hc垃为3．0A／m．

A field study was conducted to determine the effect of Trinexapac-Ethyl (TE) on four wheat varieties (rafi C97, Altar C84, Nacori C97 and rayon F86) at three growth stages (first node, second node and flag leaf). TE application (150 g a.i. ha-1) reduced plant height and decreased grain yield at any growth stage. Yield decrease was associated to a significant reduction in the number of grains per spike and in grain weight. TE delayed flowering time and grain maturity, while stem diameter and spikes m-2 were not affected. Further studies are needed to clarify the effect of TE on wheat under desert conditions of Mexico.
