Adjuvants Derived from <i>Neisseria meningitidis</i>Serogroup B Induce a Cross Reactive Response against <i>Neisseria gonorrhoeae</i>in Mice

Introduction: Neisseria is a large genus of bacteria that colonize mucosal surfaces. Of the 11 species that colonize humans, only two are pathogens, N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae. Both are obligate human pathogens;the last is causal agent of gonorrhea disease. Although curable with timely antibiotic treatment, an annual incidence of more than 62 million cases is estimated by the World Health Organization and there are no successful vaccines available. In contrast, several prophylactic vaccine options for Neisseria meningitidis meningitis do exist. Of note, there is trace of cross parenteral response induced between N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae, and proteoliposome (pl, also named outer membrane vesicles, OMV) vaccine has shown high impact on this response. Objective: To determine effect of VAMENGOC-BC? and its derivates (AFpl1 and AFCo1) at mucosal and systemic level and possible cross response against Neisseria gonhorroeae in Balb/c and C57Bl/6 mice. Methods: We evaluated cross response against N. gonorrhoeae in mouse serum IgG and saliva IgA after mucosal immunization with VA-MENGOC-BC or its derivatives (AF, Adjuvant Finlay pl1 or AFCo (cochleate) 1). Results: Immunizations with AFpl1 or AFCo1 induce anti N. gonorrhoeae at saliva IgA and serum IgG responses similar to VA-MENGOC-BC? vaccine. Conclusions: Such data confirms a new possible window of prime-boost vaccination strategy against gonorrhea and extends our knowledge regarding the effect of pl vaccines on cross responses.

Obesity is a significant and escalating health issue both in Brazil and globally, with over 650 million overweight adults worldwide. The treatment of obesity can be performed clinically, endoscopically or surgically;surgical treatment proves to be safe and more effective in terms of weight loss and long-term maintenance. Objective: This study aimed to monitor the progress of weight loss and comorbidity control in patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy with duodenal bipartition. Methods: This pilot project involved 8 patients divided into 2 arms. In the first arm, patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y duodenoileal transit bipartition (S-RYDITB), while in the second arm, patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y duodenojejunal transit bipartition (S-RYDJTB). Both procedures involved Roux-en-Y reconstruction without duodenal exclusion. In S-RYDITB, the duodenal-ileal anastomosis was performed 300 cm from the ileocecal valve (ICV), creating a 250 cm common channel and a 50 cm alimentary channel. In S-RYDJTB, a biliopancreatic loop was created 200 cm from the angle of Treitz, with a 1 m alimentary channel. Results: Five patients underwent the procedures, with one undergoing S-RYDITB and four undergoing S-RYDJTB. No adverse events such as hospitalizations, readmissions, reoperations, fistulas, bleeding, pulmonary embolism, diarrhea, dumping syndrome, or hypoglycemia occurred during the study period. The mean length of hospital stay was 2 days. The average BMI decreased from 37.27 kg/mp>2p> preoperatively to 29.48 kg/mp>2p> after 6 months. The significant percentage of weight loss was 21.22%, with excess weight loss of 63.6%. Ninety-five percent remission of comorbidities, including hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes, hypertension, steatosis, and pre-diabetes. Non-polynomial Zig-Zag and ESl shear deformation theory to study advanced composites

The mechanical behavior of advanced composites can be modeled mathematically through unknown variables and Shear Strain Thickness Functions(SSTFs). Such SSTFs can be of polynomial or non-polynomial nature and some parameters of non-polynomial SSTFs can be optimized to get optimal results. In this paper, these parameters are called ‘‘r" and ‘‘s" and they are the argument of the trigonometric SSTFs introduced within the Carrera Unified Formulation(CUF). The Equivalent Single layer(ESl) governing equations are obtained by employing the principle of Virtual Displacement(pVD) and are solved using Navier method solution. Furthermore, trigonometric expansion with Murakami theory was implemented in order to reproduce the Zig-Zag effects which are important for multilayer structures. Several combinations of optimization parameters are evaluated and selected by different criteria of average error. Results of the present unified trigonometrical theory with CUF bases confirm that it is possible to improve the stress and displacement results through the thickness distribution of models with reduced unknown variables. Since the idea is to find a theory with reduced numbers of unknowns, the present method appears to be an appropriate technique to select a simple model. However these optimization parameters depend on the plate geometry and the order of expansion or unknown variables. So, the topic deserves further research.

Tree height (H) in a natural stand or forest plantation is a fundamental variable in management, and the use of mathematical expressions that estimate H as a function of diameter at breast height (d) or variables at the stand level is a valuable support tool in forest inventories. The objective was to fit and propose a generalized H-d model for pinus montezumae and pinus pseudostrobus established in forest plantations of Nuevo San Juan parangaricutiro, Michoacan, Mexico. Using nonlinear least squares (NlS), 10 generalized H-d models were fitted to 883 and 1226 pairs of H-d data from pinus montezumae and pinus pseudostrobus, respectively. The best model was refitted with the maximum likelihood mixed effects model (MEM) approach by including the site as a classification variable and a known variance structure. The Wang and Tang equation was selected as the best model with NlS;the MEM with an additive effect on two of its parameters and an exponential variance function improved the fit statistics for pinus montezumae and pinus pseudostrobus, respectively. The model validation showed equality of means among the estimates for both species and an independent subsample. The calibration of the MEM at the plot level was efficient and might increase the applicability of these results. The inclusion of dominant height in the MEM approach helped to reduce bias in the estimates and also to better explain the variability among plots.

Biodegradable magnesium alloys are promising candidates for temporary fracture fixation devices in orthopedics;nevertheless,its fast degradation rate at the initial stage after implantation remains as one of the main challenges to be ***_(2)-based coatings to reduce the degradation rate of the Mg-implants are an attractive solution since they show high biocompatibility and *** this work,the degradation,cytotoxicity,and antibacterial performance of ZrO_(2)thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering on a Mg-Zn-Ca alloy was ***-term degradation of ZrO_(2)-coated and uncoated samples was assessed considering electrochemical techniques and H_(2)evolution(gas chromatography).Additionally,long term degradation was assessed by mass-loss *** results showed that a 380 nm ZrO_(2)coating reduces the degradation rate and H_(2)evolution of the alloy during the initial 3 days after immersion but allows the degradation of the bare alloy for the *** ZrO_(2)coating does not compromise the biocompatibility of the alloy and permits better cell adhesion and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells directly on its surface,in comparison to the bare ***,the ZrO_(2)coating prevents the adhesion and biofilm formation of ***.

Comparative study of the efficacy and safety of bromfenac, nepafenac and diclofenac sodium for the prevention of cystoid macular edema after phacoemulsification

AIM： To compare the efficacy, tolerability and safety of bromfenac 0.09%, nepafenac 0.1% or diclofenac 0.1% for the prophylaxis of the cystoid macular edema（CME） after phacoemulsification. METHODS： Group sequential observational comparative study. After phacoemulsification, patients received two months for topical treatment of either diclofenac sodium, bromfenac or nepafenac. All patients received concomitant topical tobramycin 0.3% and topical prednisolone 1%. We measured CME using optical coherence tomography（OCT） central foveal thickness, macular thickness and total macular volume. RESUlTS： We enrolled 243 patients from January to June 2015, and 35% received diclofenac, 32.9% bromfenac and 32.1% nepafenac. When we compared pre-operative to three weeks to two months, bromfenac was more effective in reducing foveal volume（21.3 and 35.4 mm3, respectively）, compared with the diclofenac（1.3 and 11.5 mm3, respectively）, and the nepafenac group, became more edematous 6.4 and 5.3, respectively. Totally 133 patients completed the post-surgical satisfaction questionnaire. patients complained of eye stickiness in 13.8% whom we gave nepafenac, versus 10.3% whom we gave diclofenac sodium, and in 0 whom we gave bromfenac. CONClUSION： Bromfenac is the best tolerated and is more effective than diclofenac and nepafenac in reducing CME after phacoemulsification.
