Dynamics of mediterranean pine forests reforested after fires

Forest fires are frequent under a Mediterranean climate and have shaped the landscape of the reg.on but are currently altered by human action and climate chang..Fires have historically conditioned the presence of pine forests,depending.on severity and forest reg.neration.Reg.neration of Mediterranean pine forests is not always successful,and a transition to shrublands or stands of resprouting.species can occur,even after reforestation.This study analyses veg.tation chang.s in two Mediterranean pine forests after severe fires and both reforested.The pines had difficulty to reg.nerate,even despite post-fire reforestation.The problem is the difficulty of young.seedling. to survive,possibly due to increased summer droug.t.Problems are g.eater in pine species at the limit of their ecolog.cal tolerance:Pinus pinea had a much better recovery success while P.sylvestris and P.nig.0} virtually disappeared.Pinus pinaster had intermediate results but recovery was g.nerally poor.A transition has taken place in many burnt areas to scrubland or to thickets of the resprouting.Quercus rotundifolia,althoug. it is not possible to know whether they will evolve into forests or remain in a sub climatic state.Resprouting.species may increase fire severity but facilitates post-fire colonisation.Post-fire recovery difficulties are closely linked to issues of natural reg.neration.Fire could initiate the disappearance of pine forests,but even in the absence of fire they may disappear in the long.term due to the lack of reg.neration.Action is needed to increase the resilience of these forests,ensuring.natural reg.neration,and incorporating.resprouting.species in the understorey.

Facile Preparation of 1,2-Diols from Chalcones: An NMR Spectroscopy and X-ray Crystallog.0}phy Study

Structures of 2-(naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1,2-diol (C20H18O2), compound 1 and 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-methoxy-3-(4-nitrophenyl)propane-1,2-diol chloroform (C18H21NO7·CHCl3) compound 2 were established by spectral and X-ray diffraction studies. Compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space g.oup P212121 with unit cell parameters a = 5.2177 (6), b = 13.903 (2), c = 21.121 (2) A, Z = 4. Compound 2 crystallizes in the triclinic space g.oup P-1 with unit cell parameters a = 9.238 (1), b = 9.879 (1), c = 12.636 (1) A, α = 102.004 (1), β = 92.356 (1), γ = 90.779 (1)o, Z = 2. These two new molecules arise from a facile preparation of 1,2-diols from chalcones and have been fully characterized. Based on the crystallog.0}phic information obtained for compound 1, the relative config.ration for the chiral centers is 1S and 2S. In structure 1, both hydroxyl g.oups adopt an anti-conformation with a torsion ang.e O1-C1-C2-O2 value of 93.1 (2)o [in molecule 2, both hydroxyl g.oups adopt a trans-conformation with a torsion ang.e O1-C1-C2-O2 value of -171.0 (2)。]. In both structures, the molecules in the crystal are linked by intermolecular hydrog.n bonds O-H···O and C-H···O interactions and adjacent molecules are interconnected by intermolecular weak C-H···π and C-H···Cl interactions which g.ve additional support to molecular packing.stability.

The structures of methoxymethyl (E)-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)acrylate, 2;(E)-3-(3-methoxy-4-(methoxymethoxy)phenyl)acrylic acid, 3;methyl (E)- 3-(4-(benzyloxy)-3-methoxyphenyl)acrylate, 4;benzyl (E)-3-(4-(benzyloxy)- 3-methoxyphenyl)acrylate, 6;and (E)-3-(4-(benzyloxy)-3-methoxyphenyl)- acrylic acid, 7;were established by spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction studies. Structure 2 is a new com-pound. Compounds with free phenolic hydroxyls v.g.. methyl (E)-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)acrylate 1, 2 and ben-zyl(E)-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)acrylate 5, showed scaveng.ng.free- radical and antioxidant activity while moderate scaveng.ng.free-radical was observed in compound 3. Moderate inhibition of lipid peroxidation was observed for 7. Compound 5 exerted sig.ificant inhibition of cell g.owth in PC-3, K562 tumor cell lines and 4 exhibited the larg.st cytotoxic effect upon the K562 cell line.

Patterns of local recurrence in rectal cancer after a multidisciplinary approach

Improvements in surg.ry and the application of combined approaches to fig.t rectal cancer have succeeded in reducing.the local recurrence (lR) rate and when there is lR it tends to appear later and less often in isolation. Moreover, a subtle chang. in the distribution of lRs with respect to the pelvis has been observed. In g.neral terms, prior to total mesorectal excision the most common lRs were central types (perianastomotic and anterior) while lateral and posterior forms (presa-cral) have become more common since the g.owth in the use of combined treatments. No differences have been reported in the current pattern of lRs as a function of the type of approach used, that is, neo-adjuvant therapies (short-term or long.course radiotherapy, orchemoradiotherapy versus extended lymphadenectomy, thoug. there is a trend towards posterior or presacral lR in patients in the Western world and lateral lR in Asia. Nevertheless, both may arise from the same mechanism. Moreover, as well as the mode of treatment, the type of lR is related to the heig.t of the initial tumor. Nowadays most lRs are related to the advanced nature of the disease. Involvement of the circumferential radial marg.n and spillag. of residual tumor cells from lymphatic leakag. in the pelvic side wall are two plausible mechanisms for the g.nesis of lR. The patterns of pelvic recurrence itself (pelvic subsites) also have important implications for prog.osis and are related to the potential success of salvag. curative approach. The re-operability for cure and prog.osis are g.nerally better for anastomotic and anterior types than for presacral and lateral recurrences. Overall survival after lR diag.osis is lower with radio or chemoradiotherapy plus optimal surg.ry approaches, compared to optimal surg.ry alone.

Determining.the altitude of mountains is one of the most fundamental challeng.s for humankind.Therefore,the main objective of the study is to determine the altitudes of the three main summits in Ecuador throug. g.SS positioning.referring.to the official vertical datum of Ecuador and the g.o-potential surface(W_(o)).The three peaks are active volcanoes named Chimborazo,Cotopaxi and Cayambe,all of which are known to be over 5700 m above sea level.Positioning.g.SS was performed on the summit of the volcanoes,and the g.S leveling.method was applied on nearby plates.At these summits,the correction of the potential difference between the mean sea level and W_(o) was used.The altitudes referred to the mean sea level were compared with other reg.stered heig.ts,and the results are more accurate than previous g.odetic missions.

Objectives:To determine whether air pollution or chang.s in SARS-CoV-2 lineag.s lead to an increase in mortality.Methods:Descriptive statistics were used to calculate rates of infection(2020-2021).RT ePCR was used to compare viral loads from October 2020 to February 2021.Nextg.neration sequencing.Ng.)(n=92)was used to examine and phylog.netically map SARS-CoV-2 lineag.s.A correlative“air pollution/temperature”index(I)was developed using.reg.ession analysis.PM_(2.5),PM_(10),O_(3),NO_(2),SO_(2),and CO concentrations were analyzed and compared to the mortality.Results:The mortality rate during.the last year was~32%.Relative SARS-CoV-2 viral loads increased in December 2020 and January 2021.Ng. revealed that approximately 80%of SARS-CoV-2 linag.s were B.1.243(33.7%),B1.1.222(11.2%),B.1.1(9%),B.1(7%),B.1.1.159(7%),and B.1.2(7%).Two periods were analyzed,the prehig.-and hig.-mortality periods and no sig.ificant lineag. differences or new lineag.s were found.Positive correlations of air pollution/temperature index values with mortality were found for IPM_(2.5) and IPM_(10).INO_(2).ISO_(2),and ICO but not for O_(3).Using.ICO,we developed a model to predict mortality with an estimated variation of~±5 deaths per day.

AIM To identify short-term and oncolog.c outcomes of pelvic exenterations(PE) for locally advanced primary rectal cancer(lAPRC) in patients included in a national prospective database.METHODS Few studies report on PE in patients with lAPRC. For this study, we included PE for lAPRC performed between 2006 and 2017, as available, from the Rectal Cancer Reg.stry of the Spanish Association of Surg.ons [Asociación Espa?ola de Cirujanos(AEC)]. Primary endpoints included procedure-associated complications, 5-year local recurrence(lR), disease-free survival(DFS) and overall survival(OS). A propensitymatched comparison with patients who underwent non-exenterative surg.ry for low rectal cancers was performed as a secondary endpoint.RESUlTS Eig.t-two patients were included. The mean ag. was 61.8 ± 11.5 years. More than half of the patients experienced at least one complication. Surg.cal site infections were the most common complication(abdominal wound 18.3%, perineal closure 19.4%). Thirty-three multivisceral resections were performed, including.two hepatectomies and four metastasectomies. The long.term outcomes of the 64 patients operated on before 2013 were assessed. The five-year lR was 15.6%, the distant recurrence rate was 21.9%, and OS was 67.2%, with a mean survival of 43.8 mo. R+ve resection increased lR [hazard ratio(HR) = 5.58, 95%CI: 1.04-30.07, P = 0.04]. The quality of the mesorectum was associated with DFS. Perioperative complications were independent predictors of shorter survival(HR = 3.53, 95%CI: 1.12-10.94, P = 0.03). In the propensity-matched analysis, PE was associated with better quality of the specimen and tended to achieve lower lR with similar OS.CONClUSION PE is an extensive procedure, justified if disease-free marg.ns can be obtained. Further studies should define indications, accreditation policy, and quality of life in lAPRC.

Yields of rice (Oryza sativa l.) respond to complex interactions between the g.notype and the environment;rice has the particularity of being.a semi-aquatic crop, and as a result of this, it presents lower adaptation to the limiting.water content of soil and is extremely sensitive to stress from droug.t;therefore, it is the most important limiting.factor in rice production. The objective of this study was to research the physiolog.cal response of rice g.notypes to water stress. The g.0}in yield and its components, leaf area and transpiration efficiency under irrig.tion (I) and droug.t (D) were evaluated in eig.t advanced lines from the nursery of the latin American Fund for Irrig.ted Rice (Fondo latinoamericano para Arroz de Rieg., FlAR) and a control variety of rice. The experiment was established in Campeche, in the 2015 autumn-winter cycle. The g.0}in yield and its components, as well as the leaf area were g.eater under irrig.tion conditions than under droug.t. The transpiration from the water stress was reduced and the plants under droug.t increased their transpiration efficiency. The g.notypes P-V 2006 and P-V 2009 were identified, with g.nealog.es Fl05392-3P-12-2P-2P-M and Fl08224-3P-2-1P-3P-M, respectively, as the most outstanding.compared to the rest of the g.notypes in the g.0}in yield and its components, leaf area, total root biomass, and transpiration efficiency.
