characteristic Study of the Boundary Layer Parameters over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal Using the QuikScAt Dataset

the marine atmospheric boundary layer （MABL） plays a vital role in the transport of momentum and heat from the surface of the ocean into the atmosphere. A detailed study on the MABL characteristics was carried out using high-resolution surface-wind data as measured by the QuikScAt （Quick scatterometer） satellite. Spatial variations in the surface wind, frictional velocity, roughness parameter and drag coefficient for the different seasons were studied. the surface wind was strong during the southwest monsoon season due to the modulation induced by the Low Level Jetstream. the drag coefficient was larger during this season, due to the strong winds and was lower during the winter months. the spatial variations in the frictional velocity over the seas was small during the post-monsoon season （-0.2 m s^-1）. the maximum spatial variation in the frictional velocity was found over the south Arabian Sea （0.3 to 0.5 m s^-1） during the southwest monsoon period, followed by the pre-monsoon over the Bay of Bengal （0.1 to 0.25 m s^-1）. the mean wind-stress curl during the winter was positive over the equatorial region, with a maximum value of 1.5×10^-7 N m^-3, but on either side of the equatorial belt, a negative wind-stress curl dominated. the area average of the frictional velocity and drag coefficient over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal were also studied. the values of frictional velocity shows a variability that is similar to the intraseasonal oscillation （ISO） and this was confirmed via wavelet analysis. In the case of the drag coefficient, the prominent oscillations were ISO and quasi-biweekly mode （QBM）. the interrelationship between the drag coefficient and the frictional velocity with wind speed in both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal was also studied.

thermal degradation characteristics and products obtained after pyrolysis of specific polymers found in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

Modem societies strongly support the recycling practices over simple waste accumulation due to environmental harm caused. In the framework of sustainable recycling of plastics from WEEE, pyrolysis is proposed here as a means of obtaining secondary value-added products. the aim of this study was to investigate the thermal degradation and the products obtained after pyrolysis of specific polymers found in the plastic part of WEEE, using thermogravimetric analysis and a pyrolizer equipped with a Gc/MS. Polymers studied include ABS, HIPS, Pc and a blend having a composition similar to that appearing in WEEE. It was found that, Pc shows greater heat endurance compared to the other polymers, whereas ABS depolymerizes in three-steps. the existence of several polymers in the blend results in synergistic effects which decrease the onset and final temperature of degradation. Moreover, the fragmentation occurred in the pyrolyzer, at certain temperatures, resulted in a great variety of compounds, depending on the polymer type, such as monomers, aromatic products, pnenoJlc compounds and hydrocarbons. the main conclusion from this investigation is that pyrolysis could be an effective method for the sustainable recycling of the plastic part of WEEE resulting in a mixture of chemicals with varying composition but being excellent to be used as fuel retrieved from secondary recycling sources.

Influence of austenization temperature on the erosion behavior of austempered ductile irons

the erosion behavior of austempered ductile irons austenized at different temperatures was studied. the results indicate that the erosion rate well correlates with the mechanical properties. At high impact angles, increasing ductility and mechanical energy density results in decreasing erosion rate, whereas increasing hardness reduces the erosion rate at low impact angles. 2008 University of Science and technology Beijing. Strategies for improving ductility of ordered intermetallics

Ordered intermetallics possess attractive high-temperature properties; however, low ductility and brittle fracture limit their use as engineering materials in many cases. this paper provides a comprehensive review on the recent progress in the development of ductile ordered intermetallics and summarizes the strategies used to improve the tensile ductility of ordered intermetallics, including control of ordered crystal structures,engineering grain-boundary structure and chemistry, eliminating environmental embrittlement, microstructure optimization, control of phase stability, and promoting transformation-/twining-induced plasticity. the basic ideas and related mechanisms underlying these ductilizing strategies are discussed. In addition, a brief mention of the current use of intermetallic alloys for structural and corrosion applications is made.

Nature of Surface Layer and Electrochemical Behavior of NaOH Hydrothermally treated Niti Alloy

Niti samples were hydrothermally treated in NaOH at 200℃ with different soaking times. the morphology of the surface layer formed was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). the composition of the layer and the major phases present were determined by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD), respectively. In contrast to the results reported by some authors, the surface layer was essentially Ni(OH)2 instead of being tiO2. the electrochemical behavior of the samples was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5% Nacl solution at 23℃, and analyzed using a simplified Randle circuit consisting of a resistance R and a capacitance c in parallel. After hydrothermal treatment, R was increased by a factor ranging from 1.5 to 5.0 times, depending on the treatment time. the value of R of all the samples became steady within a period of less than 15 h. Results of the present study indicate that alkaline treatment leads to the growth of an insulating layer on Niti, but the method is not suitable for surface modification of Niti implants due to the enhanced Ni content in the surface layer.

Sensitivity of the Simulation of tropical cyclone Size to Microphysics Schemes

the sensitivity of the simulation of tropical cyclone （tc） size to microphysics schemes is studied using the Advanced Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting Model （WRF）. Six tcs during the 2013 western North Pacific typhoon season and three mainstream microphysics schemes-Ferrier （FER）, WRF Single-Moment 5-class （WSM5） and WRF Single-Moment 6-class （WSM6）-are investigated. the results consistently show that the simulated tc track is not sensitive to the choice of microphysics scheme in the early simulation, especially in the open ocean. However, the sensitivity is much greater for tc intensity and inner-core size. the tc intensity and size simulated using the WSM5 and WSM6 schemes are respectively higher and larger than those using the FER scheme in general, which likely results from more diabatic heating being generated outside the eyewall in rainbands. More diabatic heating in rainbands gives higher inflow in the lower troposphere and higher outflow in the upper troposphere, with higher upward motion outside the eyewall. the lower-tropospheric inflow would transport absolute angular momentum inward to spin up tangential wind predominantly near the eyewall, leading to the increment in tc intensity and size （the inner-core size, especially）. In addition, the inclusion of graupel microphysics processes （as in WSM6） may not have a significant impact on the simulation of tc track, intensity and size.

this paper explores the ongoing development and implementation of longwall automation technology to achieve greater levels of underground coal mining performance. the primary driver behind the research and development effort is to increase the safety, productivity and efficiency of longwall mining operations to enhance the underlying mining business. A brief review of major longwall automation challenges is given followed by a review of the insights and benefits associated with the LASc longwall shearer automation solution. Areas of technical challenge in sensing, decision support, autonomy and human interaction are then highlighted, with specific attention given to remote operating centres, proximity detection and systems-level architectures in order to motivate further automation system *** vision for a fully integrated coal mining ecosystem is discussed with the goal of delivering a highperformance, zero-exposure and environmentally coherent mining operations.

Application of cold drawn lamellar microstructure for developing ultra-high strength wires

composite materials having lamellar structure are known to have a good combination of high strength and ductility. they are widely used in the fields of automobiles, civil engineering and construction, machines and many other industries. An application of lamellar microstructure for developing ultra-high strength steel wires was studied and discussed. Based on the experimental results, the relationships between the strength increase and microstructure development during the cold wire drawing were studied to reveal the strengthening mechanism. As cold drawing proceeds, the wire strength extremely increases, the microstructure changes from large single crystal lamellar structure to very fine polycrystalline lamellar one which has nano-sized grains, high dislocation density and amorphous regions. From the results obtained, it is concluded that heavy cold drawing technique is an effective method for lamellar composite to get high strength wires. Furthermore, formation process of the best microstructure for producing the ultra-high strength wires was also discussed.

Origin of extension twinning-mediated static recrystallization and unique parallel alignment of(0001) poles to transverse direction in Mg-3Al-0.4Mn(mass%) alloy sheet

the origin of unique parallel alignment of(0001) poles to transverse direction(tD) was investigated using Mg-3Al-0.4Mn(mass%)alloy sheets rolled with different process conditions. When rolling was performed with intermediate reheating, the alloy showed a sluggish static recrystallization(SRX) behavior during post-annealing, facilitating the nucleation and growth of statically recrystallized grains from extension twins. this resulted in the apparent texture component with the parallel alignment of the(0001) poles to the tD, and the sheet exhibited good ductility for both the rolling direction(RD) and tD. In contrast, continuous rolling without intermediate reheating led to the formation of severely deformed regions near double twins. SRX was promoted at such regions, forming a typical basal textural feature with weak RD-split of the(0001) poles. Although extension twins were formed after the continuous rolling, SRX was facilitated at the severely deformed regions with double twins, and the formation of the unique alignment of the(0001) poles to the tD was suppressed. the RD-split texture led to the large elongation to failure along the RD, while it along the tD decreased owing to the narrow distribution of the(0001)poles toward the tD, resulting in the in-plane anisotropy in ductility.

Randomness in the Hybrid Modeling and Simulation of Insulin Secretion Pathways in Pancreatic Islets

Insulin secreted by pancreatic islet ˇ-cells is the principal regulating hormone of glucose *** of insulin secretion may cause glucose to accumulate in the blood, and result in diabetes *** deterministic models of the insulin secretion pathway have been developed, the stochastic aspect of this biological pathway has not been explored. the first step in this direction presented here is a hybrid model of the insulin secretion pathway, in which the delayed rectifying Kcchannels are treated as stochastic events. this hybrid model can not only reproduce the oscillation dynamics as the deterministic model does, but can also capture stochastic dynamics that the deterministic model does not. to measure the insulin oscillation system behavior, a probability-based measure is proposed and applied to test the effectiveness of a new remedy.
