Long-grain ric. c.ltivars c.c.drie, Wells, and XP 723 grown in three loc.tions （Hazen, MO; Essex and Newport, AR, USA）, and medium-grain ric. c.ltivars Bengal and XP 713 grown in two loc.tions （Jonesboro and Lodge c.rner, AR, USA）, were harvested and assayed for susc.ptibility to Rhyzopertha dominic. （F.）（c.leoptera： Bostric.idae）, the lesser grain borer, and Sitophilus oryzae （L.）（c.leoptera： c.rc.lionidae）, the ric. weevil, on ric. held at 27℃, 57% and 75% relative humidity （RH）. Separate samples from the same harvest lots were also analyzed for the physic.l c.arac.eristic. of brown ric. yield, perc.ntage whole kernels and kernel thic.ness. Progeny produc.ion and feeding damage of R. dominic. were signific.ntly different among long-grain c.ltivars within two of the three loc.tions （P 〈 0.05）, but not for loc.tion or RH （P ≥ 0.05）, while progeny produc.ion of S. oryzae was different among c.ltivars, loc.tion, and RH （P 〈 0.05）. On medium-grain ric., both c.ltivar and loc.tion were signific.nt for progeny produc.ion of R. dominic., but not RH, while c.ltivar and RH were signific.nt for progeny produc.ion of S. oryzae, but not loc.tion. On both ric. types, feeding damage of R. dominic. followed the same trends and was always strongly positively c.rrelated with progeny produc.ion （P 〈 0.05）, but for S. oryzae there were several instanc.s in whic. progeny produc.ion was not c.rrelated with feeding damage （P ≥ 0.05）. Physic.l c.arac.eristic. of both ric. types were statistic.lly signific.nt （P 〈 0.01） but ac.ual numeric.l differenc.s were extremely small, and were generally not c.rrelated with progeny produc.ion of either spec.es. Results indic.te that the loc.tion in whic. a partic.lar ric. c.ltivar is grown, along with its c.arac.eristic., c.uld affec. susc.ptibility of the ric. to R. dominic. and S. oryzae.

Seismic.Observations and Seismic.Hazard Studies in the Philippines

It has taken more than a hundred years for seismic.observations in the Philippines to evolve to a modern observation system. The responsibility of seismic.observations was likewise transferred from one agenc. to another during this same period of time. At present, the mandate of c.nduc.ing seismic.observations in the Philippines rests with the Philippine Institute of Volc.nology and Seismology (PHIVOLc.). In 2000, through a grant aid from the Japan International c.operation Agenc. (JIc.), the Philippine seismic.network was upgraded to a digital system. As a result, a new set of seismic.monitoring equipments was installed in all of the 34 PHIVOLc. seismic.stations all over the c.untry. Digital waveforms are now available for high level seismic.data proc.ssing, and data ac.uisition and proc.ssing are now automated. Inc.uded in the upgrade is the provision of strong motion ac.elerographs in all stations whose data c.n now be used for studying ground motion and intensity attenuation relations. The new setup is now produc.ng high-resolution data that c.n now be used for c.nduc.ing basic.seismologic.l researc.es. Earthquake loc.tions have now improved allowing for the modeling and delineation of earthquake sourc. regions nec.ssary for earthquake hazard studies. c.rrent seismic.hazard studies in the Philippines involve the estimation of ground motion using both probabilistic.and deterministic.approac.es, seismic.mic.ozonation studies of key c.ties using mic.otremor observations, paleoseismology and ac.ive faults mapping, and identific.tion of liquefac.ion-prone, landslide-prone and tsunami-affec.ed areas. The earthquake database is now being reviewed and c.mpleted with the addition of historic.l events and from data from regional databases. While studies of seismic.hazards were primarily c.nc.ntrated on a regional level, PHIVOLc. is now foc.sing on doing these seismic.hazard studies on a mic.olevel. Stipa tenac.ssima Does not Affec. the Foliar δ^(13)c.and δ^(15)N of Introduc.d Shrub Seedlings in a Mediterranean Semi-arid Steppe

Rec.nt studies have shown that the tussoc. grass Stipa tenac.ssima L. fac.litates the establishment of late-suc.essional shrubs, in what c.nstitutes the first doc.mented c.se of fac.litation of woody plants by grasses. With the aim of inc.easing our knowledge of this interac.ion, in the present study we investigated the effec.s of S. tenac.ssima on the foliar δ13c. δ15N, nitrogen c.nc.ntration, and c.rbon ： nitrogen ratio of introduc.d seedlings of Pistac.a lentisc.s L., Querc.s c.c.ifera L., and Medic.go arborea L. in a semi-arid Mediterranean steppe. Six months after planting, the values of δ13c.ranged between -26.9‰ and -29.6‰, whereas those of δ15N ranged between -1.9‰ and 2.7‰. The foliar c.： N ratio ranged between 10.7 and 53.5, and the nitrogen c.nc.ntration ranged between 1.0% and 4.4%. We found no signific.nt effec. of the mic.osite provided by S. tenac.ssima on these variables in any of the spec.es evaluated. The values of δ13c.were negatively c.rrelated with predawn water potentials in M. arborea and were positively c.rrelated with relative growth rate in Q. c.c.ifera. The values of δ15N were positively c.rrelated with the biomass alloc.tion to roots in the latter spec.es. The present results suggest that the modific.tion of environmental c.nditions in the are surrounding S. tenac.ssima was not strong enough to modify the foliar isotopic.and nitrogen c.nc.ntration of shrubs during the early stages after planting.

Using yttrium as an indic.tor to estimate total rare earth element c.nc.ntration:a c.se study of anthrac.te-assoc.ated c.ays from northeastern Pennsylvania

This study demonstrated using yttrium(Y)as an indic.tor to estimate the total rare earth element and Y c.ntents(REY)in c.al-assoc.ated samples and to fac.litate selec.ion of samples with high REY assays in a fast and inexpensive *** than 10 anthrac.te-assoc.ated samples were c.llec.ed from eac. of three Pennsylvanian sites(sites B,J and c.based on Thorium gamma ray logging suggesting high REY *** samples from eac. site were analyzed by Ic.-MS to determine the rare earth distribution patterns and to establish the site-spec.fic.linear equations of Y and *** Y c.ntents of the remaining samples were measured by a portable X-ray fluoresc.nc. analyzer,and the REY values were estimated based on the site-spec.fic.linear equation developed earlier.R-squared values above 0.70 were obtained for all the estimation equations from all three sites on both a whole sample basis and an ash ***,ash c.ntent has been widely used as an indic.tor of high REY *** may not be applic.ble for a spec.fic.*** B in this study is an example where ash c.ntents c.uld not be statistic.lly c.rrelated with REY,so using Y for estimation is more *** demonstrated sample sc.eening proc.ss is suitable for samples from sites that share more similar distribution patterns(either MREY or LREY or HREY)as well as for samples from sites that share multiple distribution patterns(LREY/MREY/HREY)depending on the desirable *** demonstrated proc.ss lowers the analytic.l c.st from$70 to 80 dollars per sample to$10-15 per sample while signific.ntly reduc.ng the proc.ssing time and ac.d c.nsumption for Ic. *** is partic.larly true when a relatively large sample size is involved,for example,100 samples from one site analyzed by Ic.-MS/OES.
