Comparative eye-tracking evaluation of scatterplots and parallel coordinates

We investigate task performance and reading characteristics for scatterplots(Cartesian coordinates)and parallel *** a controlled eye-tracking study,we asked 24 participants to assess the relative distance of points in multidimensional space,depending on the diagram type(parallel coordinates or a horizontal collection of scatterplots),the number of data dimensions(2,4,6,or 8),and the relative distance between points(15%,20%,or 25%).For a given reference point and two target points,we instructed participants to choose the target point that was closer to the reference point in multidimensional *** present a visual scanning model that describes different strategies to solve this retrieval task for both diagram types,and propose corresponding hypotheses that we test using task completion time,accuracy,and gaze positions as dependent *** results show that scatterplots outperform parallel coordinates significantly in 2 dimensions,however,the task was solved more quickly and more accurately with parallel coordinates in 8 *** eye-tracking data further shows significant differences between Cartesian and parallel coordinates,as well as between different numbers of *** parallel coordinates,there is a clear trend toward shorter fixations and longer saccades with increasing number of *** an area-of-interest(AOI)based approach,we identify different reading strategies for each diagram type:For parallel coordinates,the participants’gaze frequently jumped back and forth between pairs of axes,while axes were rarely focused on when viewing Cartesian *** further found that participants’attention is biased:toward the center of the whole plot for parallel coordinates and skewed to the center/left side for Cartesian *** anticipate that these results may support the design of more effective visualizations for multidimensional data.

Supersonic-Subsonic Transition in Relatively Narrow Channels

The flow structure in relatively narrow channels has a strong three-dimensional character with complex flow phenomena, including regions of localized separation, various vortical smictures, etc., all of which have to be considered when dealing with the problem of supersonic-subsonic transition. In this paper only the following three problems are considered: 1. the effect of channel width on transition from supersonic to subsonic velocities, 2. transition from supersonic to subsonic velocities in a system of shock waves - pseudoshock wave, 3. transition from subsonic to supersonic velocities in a critical cross section at the end of a duct with fully developed turbulent channel flow. Problems connected with vortical structures and flow separation were discussed by the same author elsewhere (see References).

The paper aims at summarizing the author’s recent phenomenological study of the orthe, developmeot and identification of vortical structures in internal aerodynamics.A connection between evolution of these structures and flow separation in closed cUrVed channels is also discussed. It has been shown that in real fluids the individual vortex cores very soon lose their identity and merge into a new dissipative structure, the properties of which still have to be defined.

Iodine—A Potential Antioxidant and the Role of Iodine/Iodide in Health and Disease

In human physiology, iodine is primarily noted for its role in thyroid function and less so for its many extrathyroidal functions, particularly those based on its antioxidant properties. As I- it protects against free radicals and peroxides. This is seen in vitro in decreased depolymerization of hyaluronic acid and increased antioxidant status in human serum, and in vivo in increased antioxidant enzyme activities and decreases of malondialdehyde and peroxides. It could be shown or deduced that balneotherapeutic applications of iodine/iodide have a positive effect on cardiocirculatory diseases, respiratory disorders, some eye diseases (dry eye, cataract, age-related macular degeneration), and other degenerative diseases connected with increased oxidative stress that are also treated by balneotherapy.

High- Speed railway lines in Germany:Experience in Tunnelling in Karstic Geology and Discussion Of Tunnel Driving Methods

In the course of Deutsche Bahn's new high - speed railway line between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt, a number of tunnels are being constructed, with a total length of about 15 km. One of the longest tunnel is the 7,250 m long Irlahüll *** tunnel was driven in karst geology. It was not expected that karst phenomena would be so widespread. This forced client, designer and contractor to take a new approach to the project. Different tools were developed to handle the problems on site. Additional site investigations had to be performed to identify karst phenomena in the vicinity of the tunnel. For validating the stability and serviceability of the tunnel, a new way of defining the probability of failure of the construction had to be found. Based on the experience of the tunnel driving at the high - speed railway line in Germany between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt, two different methods of tunnelling are discussed: Drill and blast ( New Austrian Tunnelling Method: NATM) and the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM).

Prevention of Iatrogenic Cervical Cancer

Cervical carcinogenesis consists of natural occurring spontaneous cellular processes which may lead to self-organized dissipative structures of cervical cancers what was first explained in 1977 after several years of my biochemical, biophysical, hormonal and clinical studies. That was possible thanks to monograph “Biochemie der Tumoren” written in 1942 by Nobel Prize winner H. von Euler with my master Prof. B. Skarzynski. Today I express my gratitude to Nobelist Harald zur Hausen and his team for they discovered the nuclide sequences of HPV in genomes of cervical cancer cells which opened the possibility to describe the causal role of information in formula of reality. Vaccines built from the protein capsid of HPV have proved only the pathogenic information about the virus because of its lack of DNAs. All the theories of carcinogenesis have properly described this event from methodologically different point of view. The point is that one should understand the thermodynamic rules underlying each of these approaches. Neoplasms are self-organized from the cells of the patient, who did not provide the necessary conditions for cellular metabolism as defined in the moment of appearance of its zygote. In light of medical thermodynamics all oncogenic factors can divide into sufficient or necessary to events for creating a dissipathogenic cellular status. Cervical cancer is a tumor associated with the human papillomavirus as only its pathogenic dissipathogenic factors, but the genome of cervical carcinoma cells maybe the original source of many types of HPV from the peeled off cancer cells of the uterine cervix. Many things are known to increase the risk of carcinogenesis which as a natural process is an alternative of cellular or social death. Neoplasm cell is an effect of carcinogenesis, but not a causal point at which it begins its existence.

Improved patient reported outcomes with functional articulating spacers in two-stage revision of the infected hip

Enabling the use of rationally designed thin films in technological devices is a recognized goal in materials science. However, constructing such thin films using highly ordered supramolecular architectures with well-controlled size and growth direction has remained an elusive target. Here, we introduce a layer-by- layer protocol to grow hybrid thin films of molecule-based magnetic conductors comprising arachidic acid and donor bis（ethylenedioxy）tetrathiafulvalene （BEDO-TTF） as the organic component and Cu/Gd complexes as the inorganic component. The construction of layered hybrid thin films was achieved at ambient conditions by employing the Langmuir-Blodgett method, which provides good control over film thickness and packing of molecules in the monolayer. As demonstrated by X-ray diffraction, these films are crystalline with distinct organic and inorganic sublattices, where the BEDO-TTF molecular layer is interfaced with the inorganic layer. Due to the flexibility of the Langmuir-Blodgett deposition technique, this result indicates a route toward the preparation of well-ordered films with various functionalities, determined by the choice of the inorganic compound that is combined with the π-unit of BEDO-TFF. Moreover, the ability to deposit films on a variety of substrates establishes the potential for lower-cost device fabrication on inexpensive substrates.

A catalogue of possible landslide initial failure mechanisms, taking into account the geological setting and the geometry of the slope, the joint structure, the habitus of the rock blocks, as well as the mechanical behaviour of the rocks and of the rock mass (deformation and strength parameters), is presented. Its aim is to give geologists as well as engineers the opportunity to compare phenomena in the field and phenomena belonging to particular mechanisms and to find the mechanism occurring. The presented catalogue of initial landslide mechanisms only comprises the mechanisms having a clearly defined mechanical model that can be divided into empirical relations and into mechanical models, as well as an overview of run out models, which can be divided into empirical relations and into mechanical models.
