Utility of electrophysiological studies to predict arrhythmic events

AIM:To evaluate the prognostic value of electrophysiological stimulation(EPS) in the risk stratification for tachyarrhythmic events and sudden cardiac death(SCD).METHODS:We conducted a prospective cohort study and analyzed the long-term follow-up of 265 consecutive patients who underwent programmed ventricular stimulation at the Luzerner Kantonsspital(Lucerne,Switzerland) between October 2003 and April 2012. Patients underwent EPS for SCD risk evaluation because of structural or functional heart disease and/or electrical conduction abnormality and/or after syncope/cardiac arrest. EPS was considered abnormal,if a sustained ventricular tachycardia(VT) was inducible. The primary endpoint of the study was SCD or,in implanted patients,adequate ***:During EPS,sustained VT was induced in 125 patients(47.2%) and non-sustained VT in 60 patients(22.6%); in 80 patients(30.2%) no arrhythmia could be induced. In our cohort,153 patients(57.7%) underwent ICD implantation after the EPS. During follow-up(mean duration 4.8 ± 2.3 years),a primary endpoint event occurred in 49 patients(18.5%). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUROC) was 0.593(95%CI:0.515-0.670) for a left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF) < 35% and 0.636(95%CI:0.563-0.709) for inducible sustained VT during EPS. The AUROC of EPS was higher in the subgroup of patients with LVEF ≥ 35%(0.681,95%CI:0.578-0.785). Cox regression analysis showed that both,sustained VT during EPS(HR:2.26,95%CI:1.22-4.19,P = 0.009) and LVEF < 35%(HR:2.00,95%CI:1.13-3.54,P = 0.018) were independent predictors of primary endpoint ***:EPS provides a benefit in risk stratificationfor future tachyarrhythmic events and SCD and should especially be considered in patients with LVEF ≥ 35%.

The objective of the study was to establish the effect of formic acid on varroa(Varroa destructor),inside the capped brood cells,artificially *** experiments were carried out in 2017-2018 on honeybee colonies infested with varroa(***),in a research apiary belonging to the Institute for Beekeeping Research and Development in *** decapping method in the present researches used the decapping fork to scrape the capped comb,without affecting the brood,in order to open it for an effective *** combined treatment method was applied on honeybee colonies as a whole,as well as on brood combs,without bees,put in a special treatment *** researches were focused on establishing the mortality level of various stages of varroa in artificially decapped brood,in normal colony and separately,as well as to make observations on the effect of formic acid on viability of capped bee brood,artificially *** results show a high mortality of varroa,especially the protonymphs and deutonymphs stages(over 80%).The main conclusion is that the brood decapping method combined with formic acid treatment could be a useful technique to control varroa infestation,both in brood and honeybees,shortening strongly the treatment duration as compared to the usual treatments,increasing the efficacy of treatment by cutting the life cycle of varroa in brood.

Aims We aimed at disentangling the effects of spatial distance,current and past environmental dissimilarity,and their combinations on tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover by addressing the following questions:(i)Is tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover related to the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity?(ii)Does tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover respond to paleoclimate(Last Glacial Maximum and Mid-Holocene)?Methods The study was carried out in 14 Atlantic rainforest sites in Brazil(20.4 ha sampled)containing 615 tree species from 83 plant *** obtained plot-level geographic coordinates and soil variables and site-level bioclimatic variables in the current,Mid-Holocene and Last Glacial *** used structural equation models with a distance-based approach to(i)test the direct effects of spatial distance and environmental dissimilarity and(ii)test the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic(Bray–Curtis distance)and phylogenetic turnover(Comdist and Comdistnt distances).Important Findings Our results suggest a weak indirect effect of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic and phylogenetic *** community turnover was driven by the direct effects of neutral,niche-based and historical ***,we inferred that the paleoclimate(historical processes)promoted the selection of the clades that gave rise to the current flora,while spatial distances(neutral processes)limited the dispersal range of species from the regional pool and environmental conditions(niche-based processes)locally selected the taxa that are able to persist.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America. It is a fungal infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. This microorganism can penetrate the human body through direct contact and can cause intense lymphadenopathy, ulcerated lesions in the oral cavity and in the skin among other alterations. In this study, we report a case of paracoccidioidomycosis with unusual clinical presentation, as it manifested in the female sex and although it did not present any relevant complaints of respiratory focus, it presented a single ulcerated lesion in the buccal mucosa. A biopsy of the lesion and a mycological examination revealed Paracoccidioidesbrasiliensis infection.

Metabolic syndrome is an epidemic that affects more and more people, increasing the probability of suffering metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in the short, medium or long term depending on the severity. The purpose of this article is to review the metabolic syndrome, assessing consensus, controversy and prevalence. The methodology was the preparation of a literature review on various health care databases, which were from 43 articles published from 2010 to 2015, in the general population. SM rate ranges from 0% to 90% depending on genders, ages and regions. There is still lack of consensus on cutoffs of diagnostic criteria. Thus, it is concluded that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is being increased, urging the need for early diagnosis and treatment to promote the health of the global population.

Background: Information and communication technologies have revolutionized education, due to development of didactic strategies to take advantage of them for maximizing learning. The aim was to analyze the influence of immersion tools as a strategy to improve adolescents’ mental health. Methods: Qualitative research was employed, and participants’ experiences, opinions, values, behaviors, emotions, feelings were recorded. Twenty six students of both sexes, aged 13 to 15 years, from the three grades of secondary school were selected by convenience, and supported by the school’s psychologist. A workshop on emotional intelligence (EI) based on educational technology was implemented using a video;students practiced a reflexive process to understand themselves and their surroundings, creating a video + audio as a product of the workshop. In it, students analyzed several problems they face and their relationship with their contextual situation. Data collection was through semi-structured interviews before and after the workshop on EI. Data analysis was according to Souza Minayo, and the theoretical framework according to Goleman, Tapia et al., Gorostieta et al., and Vigotsky. Results: Two categories emerged: Category I, EI as a risk factors transformer from living with addictions to protection factors in adolescents. Category II, EI development through immersion tools to improve mental health in adolescents. Conclusions: Immersion tools favor user to be closer, with a humanist focus where real necessities are studied after the vivid experience of the problem to solve or get a better situation. The goal is that students experience real situations inside controlled surroundings, in such a way that they learn from their experiences and acquire knowledge through self-learning. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable polyester with great interest because it is produced from renewable resources at low cost, is recyclable to its monomers and is a potential substitute to petroleum-based polymers. The ultraviolet (UV) degradation of polymers has huge importance since the resistance to ageing, especially to UV light, is a key factor for outdoor applications. Therefore, the goal of the present work was to study the effect of the addition of different organic modified montmorillonites (MMT) on the UV stability of PLA. Results showed a higher decrease of intrinsic viscosity, increase of crystallinity and chemical structure changes along degradation time for nanocomposites. Although the photodegradation mechanism is the same as the one previously proposed, the presence of organoclays in the PLA matrix enhances photodegradation.

Despite their economic importance and well-characterized domestication syndrome,the genomic impact of domestication and the identification of variants underlying the domestication traits in Cucurbita species(pumpkins and squashes)is currently *** argyrosperma,also known as cushaw pumpkin or silver-seed gourd,is a Mexican crop consumed primarily for its seeds rather than fruit *** makes it a good model to study Cucurbita domestication,as seeds were an essential component of early Mesoamerican diet and likely the first targets of human-guided selection in pumpkins and *** obtained population-level data using tunable Genotype by Sequencing libraries for 192 individuals of the wild and domesticated subspecies of *** across *** also assembled the first high-quality wild Cucurbita *** genomic analyses revealed several structural variants and presence/absence of genes related to *** results indicate a monophyletic origin of this domesticated crop in the lowlands of *** found evidence of gene flow between the domesticated and wild subspecies,which likely alleviated the effects of the domestication *** uncovered candidate domestication genes that are involved in the regulation of growth hormones,plant defense mechanisms,seed development,and *** presence of shared selected alleles with the closely related species Cucurbita moschata suggests domestication-related introgression between both taxa.
