Transformation of leather waste into microwave-activated and N-doped carbon for Li-S batteries

The use of carbon from waste biomass has the potential to buffer the drawbacks of Li-S batteries and improve their overall performance. Chrome-Tanned-LeatherShavings(CTLS) are undesirable wastes, highly available for transformation into porous carbon. Microwave activation is an efficient state-of-the-art procedure to obtain unique porous structures and nitrogen incorporation can improve the performance of porous carbons. This study proposes the transformation of CTLS into a microwave activated porous carbon, and then was modified to introduce nitrogen. A microporous activated carbon with a specific surface area of 556 m2g-1 with honeycomb-like structure was obtained. Both urea thermal decomposition and ethanolamine impregnation improves the nitrogen and amine presence of surface groups. However,the results indicated that only urea treatment was effective in improving the initial capacity of the cell(1363 mAhg-1), which is probably linked with the sorption of long-chain polysulfides. This investigation confirms that it is possible to obtain carbon materials from CTLS, for use as sulfur-host cathodes in Li-S batteries, and improve their performance with urea thermal decomposition. Furthermore, a Radial basis function neural network was fitted to provide statistical support to the experimental results. The trained model corroborated the importance of nitrogen content of the carbons in the discharge capacity of the cells.

Echinococcal cysts are usually found in liver and lungs, but any other organ can potentially be involved. Extrahepatic disease due to hydatid cyst may develop in the abdominal and pelvic cavity, aside from in other less common locations, which may make both diagnosis and treatment more complex. We present a rare case of extrahepatic echinococcosis in a 70-year old patient with a 4-d history of dull abdominal pain, anemia within the transfusion range and fever. She underwent surgery for left renal hydatid cysts 30 years ago. After non operative treatment, imaging studies showed a calcified hydatid cyst in a retrogastric location communicating with a proximal jejunal loop. En-block resection of the mass together with the adrenal gland was performed including closure of the enteric fistula. Anatomic pathology confirmed the diagnosis of a calcified hydatid cyst of left adrenal origin. Surgery is the treatment of choice and most authors recommend removal of cyst and adrenal gland.

AIM: To investigate the role of genes and kinetics of specific transcription factors in liver regeneration, and to analyze the gene expression and the activity of some molecules crucially involved in hepatic regeneration. METHODS: USING gel-shift assay and RT-PCR, transcription factors, such as NF-κB, STAT-3, SMAD3 and AP-1, and gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and c-met were analyzed in an animal model of chemically induced hepatectomy. RESULTS: Gene expression of HGF and its receptor c-met peaked at 3 h and 24 h after acute CCl4 intoxi- cation. iNOS expression was only observed from 6 to 48 h. Transcriptional factor NF-κB had an early activation at 30 min after acute liver damage. STAT-3 peaked 3 h post- intoxication, while AP-1 displayed a peak of activation at 48 h. SMAD3 showed a high activity at all analyzed times. CONCLUSION: TNF-α and IL-6 play a central role in hepatic regeneration. These two molecules are responsible for triggering the cascade of events and switch-on of genes involved in cell proliferation, such as growth factors, kinases and cyclins which are direct participants of cell proliferation.

Hyperspectral images are multidimensional massive sets of information that have shown a great potential for different kind of applications as urban mapping,environmental management,vegetation and crops supervision and mineral ***,due to its high dimensional nature and the high variability of the spectral information,the dimensionality reduction process is one of the main challenges in processing hyperspectral *** aim of dimensionality reduction is to eliminate redundant information and simplify the subsequent processes of classification and the search of *** this context,several dimensionality reduction methods have been proposed,but most of them are not flexible enough to deal with the particular features of the hyperspectral *** this way,the use of intelligent methods as neural networks and specially an unsupervised approach as self-organized maps,may improve the dimensionality reduction stage and the final classification *** paper proposes an unsupervised method for the dimensionality reduction of hyperspectral images based on Kohonen self-organized maps,which,compared with other traditional methods such as principal component analysis(PCA)and wavelet decomposition,provides better classification *** results provided in this paper use an RBF(radial basis function)*** average,the proposed method provides a 64%dimensionality reduction and an 88.5%classification *** results suggest that the dimensionality reduction algorithm based on self-organized maps is an efficient approach compared with other popular *** is due to the ability of self-organized maps to automatically detect(self-organizing)relationships within the set of input patterns,which provides flexibility to deal with the special features of the hyperspectral images.

The biochemical and molecular processes involved in the habituation of maize cells to growth in the presence of the cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor dichlobenil （DCB） were investigated. DCB affects the synthesis of cellulose both in active and stationary growth phases and alters the expression of several CesA genes. Of these, ZmCesA5 and ZmCesA7 seem to play a major role in habituating cells to growth in the presence of DCB. As a consequence of the reduction in cellulose, the expression of several genes involved in the synthesis of hydroxycinnamates is increased, resulting in cell walls with higher levels of ferulic and p-coumaric acids. A proteomic analysis revealed that habituation to DCB is linked to modifications in several metabolic pathways. Finally, habituated cells present a reduction in glutathione S-transferase detoxifying activity and antioxidant activities. Plant cell adaptation to the disturbance of such a crucial process as cellulose biosynthesis requires changes in several metabolic networks, in order to modify cell wall architecture and metabolism, and survive in the presence of the inhibitor. Some of these modifications are described in this paper.

Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is a rare malignant tumor arising from the epithelium of the bile *** is still the only chance of potentially curative treatment in patients with perihilar ***,radical resection requires aggressive surgical strategies that should be tailored optimally according to the location,size and vascular invasion of the *** diagnosis and staging of these tumors is therefore critical for optimal treatment planning and for determining a *** computed tomography(MDCT),magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and MR cholangiography are useful tools,both to diagnose and stage hilar *** imaging techniques allow accurate detection of the level of obstruction and the longitudinal and radial spread of the *** addition,high-resolution MDCT and MR provide specific radiographic features to determine vascular involvement of anatomic structures,such as the hepatic artery or the portal vein,which are critical to decide the surgical ***,radiological staging allows detection of patients with distant metastasis in the liver or peritoneum who will not benefit from a surgical approach.
