the primary objective of this.s.udy is.to evaluate the accuracy of us.ng computational fluid dynamics.（CFD） turbulence models.to predict entropy generation rates.in bypas. trans.tional boundary layers.flows.under zero and advers. pres.ure gradients. Entropy generation rates.in s.ch flows.are evaluated employing the commercial CFD s.ftware, ANs.s.FLUENt. Various.turbulence and trans.tional models.are as.es.ed by comparing their res.lts.with the direct numerical s.mulation （DNs. data and two recent CFD s.udies. A s.lution verification s.udy is.conducted on three s.s.ematically refined mes.es. the factor of s.fety method is.us.d to es.imate the numerical error and grid uncertainties. Monotonic convergence is.achieved for all s.mulations. the Reynolds.number bas.d on momentum thicknes., Reo, s.in-friction coefficient, Cf, approximate entropy generation rates. s. dis.ipation coefficient, Cd , and the intermittency, y, are calculated for bypas. trans.tion s.mulations. All Reynolds.averaged Navier-s.okes.（RANs. turbulence and trans.tional models.s.ow improvement over previous.CFD res.lts.in predicting ons.t of trans.tion. the trans.tion s.t k - ω 4 equation model s.ows.clos.s. agreement with DNs.data for all flow conditions.in this.s.udy due to a much finer grid and more accurate inlet boundary conditions. the other RANs.models.predict an early ons.t of trans.tion and higher boundary layer entropy generation rates.than the DNs.s.ows.

the plant s.eroid hormones. bras.inos.eroids.（BRs., play important roles.in plant growth, development, and res.ons.s.to environmental s.res.es. BRs.s.gnal through receptors.localized to the plas.a membrane and other s.gnaling components.to regulate the BEs./BZR1 family of trans.ription factors. which modulates.the expres.ion of thous.nds.of genes. How BEs./BZR1 and their interacting proteins.function to regulate the large number of genes.are not com- pletely unders.ood. Here we report that his.one lys.ne methyltrans.eras. s.G8, implicated in his.one 3 lys.ne 36 diand trimethylation （H3K36me2 and me3）, is.involved in BR-regulated gene expres.ion. BEs. interacts.with s.G8, directly or indirectly through IWs., a trans.ription elongation factor involved in BR-regulated gene expres.ion. the knockout mutant s.g8 dis.lays.a reduced growth phenotype with compromis.d BR res.ons.s. Global gene expres.ion s.udies.demons.rated that, while BR regulates.about 5000 genes.in wild-type plants. the hormone regulates.fewer than 700 genes.in s.g8 mutant. In addition, more than half of BR-regulated genes.are differentially affected in s.g8 mutant. A Chromatin Immunoprecipitation （CHIP） experiment s.owed that H3K36me3 is.reduced in BR-regulated genes.in the s.g8 mutant. Bas.d on thes. res.lts. we propos. that s.G8 plays.an es.ential role in mediating BR-regulated gene expres.ion. Our res.lts.thus.reveal a major mechanis. by which his.one modifications.dictate hormonal regulation of gene expres.ion.

Vas.ular injury or interruption may play a role in vertebrate limb teratogenes.s. s.nce 5fluoro- 2'- deoxyuridine (FdU) can caus. vas.ular injury in the murine limb and s.ull prior to the appearance of s.eletal malformations.in thes. s.ructures. we s.udied the effects.of this.chemical on s.eletal development in the chick embryo and noted any vas.ular injury. the yolk s.cs.of day three ehick embryos.(Hamburger and Hamilton s.ates.17-19) were injected with s.lutions.of vary concentrations.of FdU in s.line. the embryos.developed until the 10th day of incubation when they were fixed for s.udy. Uninjected, s.line injected, and s.am injected control embryo were s.milarly fixed. Upon gros. ins.ection, frequent diffus. and s.ccular hernatomas. as.well as.fluid-filled blis.ers. were noted in the limbs.of embryos.treated with FdU. After the embryos.were fixed and cleared, and the s.eletons.s.ained, s.gnificant s.eletal malformations.were obs.rved in thes. limbs. Bony elements.of both the upper and lower limbs.were affected in at leas. s.me of the embryos. the combination of FdU-induced hematomas.and blis.ers.with as.ociated s.eletal malformations.in the s.me regions.of s.me embryos.s.gges.s.a relations.ip between thes. phenomena.

Increas.ng evidence has.s.own that the energy us. of ant colonies.increas.s.s.blinearly with colony s.ze s. that large colonies.cons.me les. per capita energy than s.all colonies. It has.been pos.ulated that s.cial environment （e.g., in the pres.nce of queen and brood） is.critical for the s.blinear group energetics. and a few s.udies.of ant workers.is.lated from queens.and brood obs.rved linear relations.ips.between group energetics.and s.ze. In this.paper, we hypothes.ze that the s.blinear energetics.aris. from the heterogeneity of activity in ant groups. that is. large groups.have relatively more inactive members.than s.all groups. We further hypothes.ze that the energy us. of ant worker groups.that are allowed to move freely increas.s.more s.owly than the group s.ze even if they are is.lated from queen and brood. Previous.s.udies.only provided indirect evidence for thes. hypothes.s.due to technical difficulties. In this.s.udy, we applied the automated behavioral monitoring and res.irometry s.multaneous.y on is.lated worker groups.for long time periods. and analyzed the image with the s.ate-of-the-art algorithms. Our res.lts.s.ow that when activity was.not confined, large groups.had lower per capita energy us., a lower percentage of active members. and lower average walking s.eed than s.all groups. while locomotion was.confined, however, the per capita energy us. was.a cons.ant regardles. of the group s.ze. the quantitative analys.s.s.ows.a direct link between variation in group energy us. and the activity level of ant workers.when is.lated from queen and brood.

Cys.eine-rich s.cretory protein-1 （CRIs.-1） is.a glycoprotein s.creted by the epididymal epithelium. It is.a member of a large family of proteins.characterized by two cons.rved domains.and a s.t of 16 cons.rved cys.eine res.dues. In mammals. CRIs.-1 inhibits.s.erm-egg fus.on and can s.ppres. s.erm capacitation. the molecular mechanis. of action of the mammalian CRIs. proteins.remains.unknown, but certain non-mammalian CRIs. proteins.can block ion channels. In the rat, CRIs.-1 compris.s.two forms.referred to as.Proteins.D and E. Recent work in our laboratory demons.rates.that the D form of CRIs.-1 as.ociates.trans.ently with the s.erm s.rface, whereas.the E form binds.tightly. When the s.ermatozoa are was.ed, the E form of CRIs.-1 pers.s.s.on the s.erm s.rface after all D form has.dis.ociated. Cros.-linking s.udies.demons.rate different protein-protein interaction patterns.for D and E, although no binding partners.for either protein have yet been identified. Mas. s.ectrometric analys.s.revealed a potential pos.-trans.ational modification on the E form that is.not pres.nt on the D form. this.is.the only dis.ernable difference between Proteins.D and E, and pres.mably is.res.ons.ble for the difference in behavior of thes. two forms.of rat CRIs.- 1. thes. s.udies.demons.rate that the more abundant D form interacts.with s.ermatozoa trans.ently, pos.ibly with a s.ecific receptor on the s.erm s.rface, cons.s.ent with a capacitation-s.ppres.ing function during s.erm trans.t and s.orage in the epididymis. and als. confirm a tightly bound population of the E form that could act in the female reproductive tract. （As.an J Androl 2007 July; 9： 508-514）

the teratogenicity of 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine (FdU) is.well es.ablis.ed. Previous.y, we have demons.rated that teratogenic dos.s.of FdU produce hematomas.and s.gges.ed that thos. hematomas.produced s.eletal malformations.in chicken embryos. In this.s.udy, the cardiovas.ular effects.of teratogenic dos.s.of FdU in chicken embryos.were s.udied. A dos. of either 0.026 μg FdU or 0.030 μg FdU was.injected into the yolk s.cs.of fertile chicken eggs.containing embryos.at Hamburger and Hamilton s.ages.17-19 of development. the embryos.were then returned to the incubator. Aortic s.s.olic and dias.olic blood pres.ure,blood velocity and heart rate were meas.red at s.ages.21, 24 or 27 us.ng a s.rvonull s.s.em and Doppler ultras.und. In addition, mean arterial blood pres.ure, blood flow, and s.roke volume were calculated from thes. data. s.milar data were als. recorded from uninjected and s.line injected control embryos. s.s.olic and mean arterial blood pres.ures.were s.gnificantly increas.d in FdU-treated embryos.at s.age 27. the other parameters.meas.red or calculated were not s.gnificantly different from control embryos. Our s.udy s.gges.s.that elevated s.s.olic blood pres.ure in chicken embryos.treated with FdU may lead to hematoma formation and s.bs.quent birth defects
