Physica. restra.nts a.e widely used a.d a.cepted a. protective mea.ures during trea.ment in intensive ca.e unit (ICU). This review of the litera.ure summa.izes the a.verse events a.d outcomes a.socia.ed with physica. restra.nt use, a.d the risk fa.tors a.socia.ed with their use during trea.ment in the ICU. The PubMed, Scopus, a.d Google Schola. da.a.a.es were screened using predefined sea.ch terms to identify studies perta.ning to a.verse events a.d/or outcomes a.socia.ed with physica. restra.nt use, a.d the fa.tors a.socia.ed with their use in a.ult pa.ients a.mitted to the ICU. a.tota. of 24 a.ticles (including 6126 pa.ients) tha. were published between 2006 a.d 2022 were identified. The described a.verse events a.socia.ed with physica. restra.nt use included skin injuries, subsequent delirium, neurofunctiona. impa.rment, a.d a.higher ra.e of post-tra.ma.ic stress disorder. Subsequent delirium wa. the most frequent a.verse event to be reported. No a.terna.ive mea.ures to physica. restra.nts were discussed, a.d only one study reported a.sta.da.dized protocol for their use. a.though physica. restra.nt use ha. been reported to be a.socia.ed with a.verse events (including neurofunctiona. impa.rment) in the litera.ure, the a.a.la.le evidence is limited. a.though ca.sa.ity ca.not be confirmed, a.definite a.socia.ion a.pea.s to exist. Our findings suggest tha. it is essentia. to improve a.a.eness rega.ding their a.verse impa.t a.d optimize a.proa.hes for their detection, ma.a.ement, a.d prevention using protocols or checklists.
