Background Nat.ral and ant.ropogenic wildfires burn large areas of arid and semi-arid forest. wit. significant.socio-economic and environment.l impact.. fire regimes are cont.olled by climat., veget.t.on t.pe, and ant.ropogenic fact.rs such as ignit.on sources and human-induced dist.rbances. Project.ons of climat. and land-use change suggest.t.at.t.ese cont.olling fact.rs will change, alt.ring fire regimes in t.e near fut.re. In t.e sout.ern Cent.al Mont., Mendoza, Argent.na, t.e fact.rs t.at.modulat. t.e fire t.mporal and spat.al variabilit. are poorly underst.od. We reconst.uct.d t.e fire hist.ry of sout.east.of Mendoza from 1984 t. 2023 and invest.gat.d t.e relat.onships bet.een fire ext.nt.and climat. variabilit. at.seasonal and int.rannual scales. Burned areas were det.rmined using Google Eart. Engine by processing Landsat.5-t., Landsat.7-Et.+, and Landsat.8-OLI-t.RS sensor *** t.e region exhibit.d high spat.al and t.mporal variabilit. in fire occurrence, being a mosaic of areas wit. different.fire hist.ries and recovery t.mes. Bet.een 1985 and 2023, fire recurrence ranged from sit.s unburned t. sit.s wit. up t. 14 fires. t.e occurrence of large fires was st.ongly favored by a combinat.on of a year wit. abundant.spring–early summer precipit.t.on, which favors fuel accumulat.on, followed by a year of low spring–early summer precipit.t.on.
