Mangrove ecosystems are sites with high biodiversity of benthic fauna, and fiddler crabs(genus Uca) are common benthic fauna in mangroves. The North Sulawesi in Indonesia has a good condition of mangrove while the information of the fiddler crabs is still limited. Manual samplings were conducted in wet, dry and transient seasons at a mangrove in Kema, North Sulawesi to investigate the species composition, density and distribution pattern of fiddler crabs. A total of 168 individuals, subjected to eight species of genus Uca crabs were collected at the mangrove, with U. triangularis having the highest abundance and U. annulipes having the lowest abundance.The densities of fiddle crabs were 27.56 ind./m2, 32.89 ind./m2and 14.22 ind./m2at the seaward, middle and landward zones, respectively, and the density was higher in dry and wet seasons than in transient season.

In museum design and operation,daylight is typically discouraged due to high risk of damaging the display objects.However,past studies in high-latitude regions have shown the possibility to apply daylight in museums,so long as it is carefully planned,and the display objects are not from the category of high responsive materials.In the tropical region,the influence of daylighting on light exposure on museum objects is still unknown.This study therefore aims to assess and mitigate the impact of annual daylight exposure on objects with low responsive materials in a tropical daylit museum building.Annual daylight modelling and simulation are performed to achieve the objective,followed with Morris sensitivity analysis and Mahalanobis distance classifier to optimise the outcome.It is found that either WWR or glazing transmissivity gives the greatest influence on the performance indicators.Based on the proposed optimisation algorithm,it is possible to determine the optimum solutions satisfying the performance indicators target,for a certain opening type.Overall,the contribution of this study is the proposed computational modelling and simulation methods to mitigate the exposure risk while optimising daylight as a renewable energy source.

Carbon Sources of Sediment and Epifaunal Food Sources in a Tropical Mangrove Forest in North Sulawesi, Indonesia

The stable isotope ratios of nitrogen(δ^(15)N) and carbon(δ^(13)C) were applied in this study to analyze sediment carbon sources and primary food sources of epifauna in an oceanic mangrove forest in tropical North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Proportional contribution of mangrove-derived carbon to the food sources was compared among epifauna belonging to different feeding guilds. The sediment in the mangrove site with a depleted δ^(13)C signature(-28.02‰± 0.24‰) mainly consists of mangrove-derived carbon. Analysis using Bayesian stable isotope mixing model in the R program shows that mangrove-derived carbon can dominate the food sources of a majority of the epifauna(11 out of the total 18 species), especially 2 sesarmid crabs Parasesarma semperi and Sesarma sp., crab Epixanthus dentatus, and snails Terebralia sulcata and Optediceros breviculum, which belong to various feeding guilds. Mangrove-derived carbon has a proportional contribution to the food sources of fiddle crab Tubuca coarctata and 3 littorinid snails(Littoraria spp.) close to that of suspended particulate organic matter. Three planktophagous bivalve species(Anadara antiquata, Anadara sp. and Callista erycina) were found to mainly feed on seagrass-derived materials. Mean proportional contributions of mangrove-derived carbon to the food sources were 50.15%, 59.60%, 46.20% and 27.58% for the carnivorous, omnivorous, phytophagous and planktophagous groups, respectively. The results suggest that mangrove-derived carbon can directly(via grazing plant tissues) or indirectly(via deposit feedings) make an important contribution to the food sources of epifauna in the oceanic mangrove forest where the allochthonous input of organic carbon is low.

Coral trout Plectropomus leopardus is a high-economical value of marine fish commodity.So,the larviculture for this species should be performed in hatchery scale for their sustainability.One of the important thing in larval stage is hormonal mechanisms.Thyroid hormone is known plays an important role in the metamorphosis of marine fish larvae.The source of that hormone is assumed derived from zooplankton as their live feeds.The live feeds commonly used for marine fish larvae in hatchery are zooplankton copepods and rotifers.The purpose of this research to determine the influence of feeding copepods and rotifers on thyroid hormone profile activity,consisted of triiodothyronine(T3)and thyroxine(T4),related to the metamorphoses of coral trout larvae.The research was conducted using three feeding schemes:copepods(A),copepods-rotifers(B),and rotifers(C).It was done for 50 Days After Hatching(DAH).The results showed that larvae from treatment(A)and(B)achieved the highest level of T3 and T4 earlier at 30 DAH,which indicated that both of those larvae have entered the metamorphosis stage earlier.On the other hand,larvae from treatment(C)achieved it and entered the metamorphosis stage later at 40 DAH.In addition,iodine levels in the copepods were significantly higher than those of in rotifers(P<0.05).Based on this research,live feeds copepods and rotifers have effect on thyroid hormone activity.Copepods have better potential in accelerating the metamorphosis achievement of coral trout larvae with the fact that they have higher iodine content.

BACKGROUND The B.1.617.2(delta)variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)was first discovered in Maharashtra in late 2020 and has rapidly expanded across India and worldwide.It took only 2 mo for this variant to spread in Indonesia,making the country the new epicenter of the delta variant as of July 2021.Despite efforts made by accelerating massive rollouts of current vaccines to protect against infection,cases of fully-vaccinated people infected with the delta variant have been reported.AIM To describe the demographic statistics and clinical presentation of the delta variant infection after the second dose of vaccine in Indonesia.METHODS A retrospective,single-centre case series of the general consecutive population that worked or studied at Faculty of Medicine,Universitas Indonesia with confirmed Delta Variant Infection after a second dose of vaccine from 24 June and 25 June 2021.Cases were collected retrospectively based on a combination of author recall,reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR),and whole genome sequencing results from the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory,Faculty of Medicine,Universitas Indonesia.RESULTS Between 24 June and 25 June 2021,15 subjects were confirmed with the B.1.617.2(delta)variant infection after a second dose of the vaccine.Fourteen subjects were vaccinated with CoronaVac(Sinovac)and one subject with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19(Oxford-AstraZeneca).All of the subjects remained in home isolation,with fever being the most common symptom at the onset of illness(n=10,66.67%).The mean duration of symptoms was 7.73 d(±5.444).The mean time that elapsed from the first positive swab to a negative RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 was 17.93 d(±6.3464).The median time that elapsed from the second dose of vaccine to the first positive swab was 87 d(interquartile range:86-128).CONCLUSION Although this case shows that after two doses of vaccine,subjects are still susceptible to the delta variant infection,currently available vaccines remain the most effective protection

The antibacterial activity of selected plants towards resistant bacteria isolated from clinical specimens

Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial activity of eight plants against methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA),extended spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase-resistant Enterobacteriaceae,which are the most prevalent causes of infections in inpatients.Methods:The antibacterial activity was calculated based on the minimum inhibitory concentration using Mueller-Hinton broth in a microdilution method.Results:The best antibacterial activity,calculated as minimum inhibitory concentration values,against MRSA was shown by the Kaempferia pandurata(Roxb)(K.pandurata)extract(256 μg/mL) and the Senna alata(S.alata) extract(512 μg/mL).Phytochemical screening of dried S.alata leaf and its extract showed the presence of flavonoids,alkaloids,saponins,quinones,tannins and sterols,while dried K.pandurata and its extract only showed the presence of flavonoids and sterols/triterpenoids.Conclusions:K.pandurata and S.alata have the potential to be developed as antibacterial agents,especially against MRSA strain,but further in vivo research and discovery of the mode of its action are still needed to shed light on the effects.

Quantifying the relationship between visitor satisfaction and perceived accessibility to pedestrian spaces on festival days

Many cities organize cultural festivals to promote their distinctiveness, boost the local economy, and enhance quality of life. However, urban spaces are packed with visitors on festival days, thus affecting accessibility to pedestrian spaces. This research examined visitor satisfaction with accessibility to pedestrian spaces during special events such as festivals. We particularly focused on the Hakata Dontaku festival, which is celebrated in Fukuoka, Japan. We studied three main elements that affect pedestrian satisfaction and perceived accessibility through walking, namely, safety, mobility, and amenities. We first analyzed previous studies and employed analytical hierarchy process to setup indicators for satisfaction measurement. Second, we determined visitor satisfaction through a survey questionnaire, which was conducted during the Hakata Dontaku festival. Third, we assessed the normality of the data set that was obtained from the questionnaire. Finally, we applied structural equation modeling. Results showed that the proposed model was a good fit, as indicated by the goodness of fit test, and the majority of indicators loaded significant values that supported their constructs. Satisfaction with amenities was found to be the most statistically significant variable that influences visitors＇ perceived accessibility during the Hukata Dontaku festival

Objective:To explore secondary metabolite of bacteria-associated Xestospongia testudinaria from Tanjung Kasuari,Sorong,Papua.Methods:The antimicrobial activities of extracts against two Gram-positive bacteria(Staphylococcus aureus) and three Gram-negative bacteria(Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Eschericia coli and Salmonella typhi) were determined by disk diffusion dilution method.Results:The test showed that of 15 isolates of symbiont bacteria,6 isolates were successfully isolated and coded,namely,Xp 4.1,Xp 4.2,Xp 4.3,Xp 4.4,Xp 4.5 and Xp 4.6.Of the six bacterial isolates,isolated Xp 4.2 was found to have more powerful antibacterial activity than any other isolates of symbiont bacteria.Antibacterial activity assay for the n-hexane soluble fractions,ethyl-acetate soluble fractions,and n-buthanol soluble fractions revealed more powerful anti-bacterial activity than any other soluble fractions.Phytochemical screening showed alkaloid and steroid/triterpenoid,while identification for isolate of Xp 4.2 bacterial showed bacteria.Conclusions:Metabolites of bacterial associated with marine sponge Xestospongia testudinaria promise to be developed into antibacterial agents.

In recent years,several studies have reported positive outcomes of cell-based therapies despite insufficient engraftment of transplanted cells.These findings have created a huge interest in the regenerative potential of paracrine factors released from transplanted stem or progenitor cells.Interestingly,this notion has also led scientists to question the role of proteins in the secretome produced by cells,tissues or organisms under certain conditions or at a particular time of regenerative therapy.Further studies have revealed that the secretomes derived from different cell types contain paracrine factors that could help to prevent apoptosis and induce proliferation of cells residing within the tissues of affected organs.This could also facilitate the migration of immune,progenitor and stem cells within the body to the site of inflammation.Of these different paracrine factors present within the secretome,researchers have given proper consideration to stromal cell-derived factor-1(SDF1)that plays a vital role in tissue-specific migration of the cells needed for regeneration.Recently researchers recognized that SDF1 could facilitate site-specific migration of cells by regulating SDF1-CXCR4 and/or HMGB1-SDF1-CXCR4 pathways which is vital for tissue regeneration.Hence in this study,we have attempted to describe the role of different types of cells within the body in facilitating regeneration while emphasizing the HMGB1-SDF1-CXCR4 pathway that orchestrates the migration of cells to the site where regeneration is needed.

Blastocyst elective single embryo transfer improves perinatal outcomes among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology in Indonesia

Objective:To compare the effectiveness of blastocyst elective single embryo transfer(eSET)and double embryo transfer(DET)in reducing low birth weight,preterm birth,and perinatal mortality in in vitro fertilization(IVF)cycles of Indonesian women.Methods:A retrospective observational study was conducted at Morula IVF Clinic,Jakarta,Indonesia.A total of 179 women who underwent either eSET or DET and had met the eligibility criteria were included.Seventy-six women underwent eSET while 103 underwent DET in their IVF cycles.Low birth-weight rate,preterm birth rate,and perinatal mortality rate of both groups were measured as the primary study outcomes.Neonatal intensive care unit(NICU)admission rate,Apgar score,multiple pregnancy,and maternal complications during pregnancy were also evaluated.Results:The risk of low birth weight[odds ratio(OR)=0.21,95%confidential interval(CI):0.10-0.45,P<0.001]and preterm birth(OR=0.25,95%CI:0.13-0.49,P<0.001)was significantly lower in the eSET group compared with the DET group.Furthermore,eSET efficiently reduced the incidence of NICU admission and multiple pregnancy(P=0.01 and P<0.001,respectively).No significant difference was observed in terms of perinatal mortality rate,Apgar score,and maternal complications including gestational diabetes,preeclampsia as well as pregnancy-induced hypertension(P≥0.05).However,a lower incidence of antepartum hemorrhage was noticed in the eSET group than in the DET group(P=0.03).Conclusions:Compared with DET,infants conceived through IVF cycles with eSET have a significantly lower risk of low birth weight,preterm birth,and NICU admissions.Moreover,eSET is shown to reduce multiple pregnancy rate,yet no significant differences are observed in the perinatal mortality rates,Apgar score and maternal complications(except for the incidence of antepartum hemorrhage)between both groups.
