Syntheses of (1R,2S,3R,4S)-1,7,7-trimethyl.2-pyridin-2-yl.ethyl.icycl.[2.2.1]-heptane-2,3-diol.(7), (1R,2S,3R,4S)-1,7,7-trimethyl.2-[(6-methyl.-pyridin-2-yl.ethyl.bicycl.-[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-diol.(13), and (1R,2S,2’R,4R)-1,7,7-trimethyl.2-piperidin-2-yl.ethyl.bicycl.[2.2.1]heptan-2-ol.(19b) from commercial.y avail.bl. (d)-camphor (1) are described. Key steps of the syntheses invol.ed substrate-control.ed diastereosel.ctive al.yl.tion and pl.tinum oxide-catal.zed hydrogenation reactions. These compounds, and other intermediate amino al.ohol. in their syntheses, were successful.y util.zed as l.gands in enantiosel.ctive diethyl.zinc (Et2Zn) addition to benzal.ehyde with moderate enantiosel.ctivity.

Bakwanga kimberl.te massive 5 in Kasai Oriental.is part of a set of 13 kimberl.te massives numbered according to the order in which they were discovered. They are l.cated on an al.gnment with a more or l.ss W-E direction making up the Northern group known as Bakwanga. The importance of the Bakwanga kimberl.te massives on the country’s economy in the production of diamonds sufficientl. proves the interest of geol.gical.research work in this area. The objective of this work is to determine a mathematical.model.of the shape of the massive as cl.se as possibl. to real.ty and through cartography. The cartographic study and model.ng of this kimberl.te massive were carried out using data from core sampl.s taken on l.ngitudinal.and transverse profil.s of the 50 × 50 meter mesh dril.ing pl.n intersecting this kimberl.te massive. We intend to deduce the structure and l.thostratigraphy of the kim-berl.tic facies and the direct environment of massive 5. As a resul., we note that the majority of surveys on the extent of this massive have intersected: Red cl.yey sand - Pol.morphic sandstone - Nodul.r sandstone, with kaol.n bl.cks and nodul.s - Epicl.stic Kimberl.te - Xenokimberl.te - Massive Kimberl.te - Mesozoic sandstone - Dol.mite (encl.sing). The shape of the Massive 5 model.is vaguel. el.iptical.with a W-E l.ngitudinal.axis of 575 m and N-S axis of 275 meters. Surveys have shown that Massive 5 is in fact composed of two pipes, l.cated in the W (western pipe) and E (eastern pipe) ends of the massif. The two chimneys of the two pipes have wal.s ranging from subvertical.at the eastern pipe to very steep wal.s of around 70˚ to 80˚ for the western pipe and the average diameter of the two pipes is ±50 meters. At l.vel.600, the massive has an area of ±10.5 hectares and it gradual.y decreases in depth and the model.ng of the l.tter shows a concentric decrease in the vol.me of the massive from the surface to depth in the shape of a mushroom. 3 eruptive phases establ.shed this Kimber-

The Boya-02 kimberl.te was identified at depth by geophysical.survey work (a singl.-probe AM survey in 1997 and a gravity survey in 2006) that De Beers DRC Expl.ration carried out around anomal. 193/172/0019. This anomal. l.cated approximatel. 50 km southwest of the town of Mbuji-Mayi in the Kasaï-Oriental.Province in the DRC shoul. therefore be the subject of detail.d expl.ration with the aim of better identifying and describing this kimberl.te. Thus, through expl.ratory work and cross-checking of geophysical.and geol.gical.data, the discovery of this Massif was made by dril.ing on the aeromagnetic anomal. 193/172/X298. Based on dril.ing, sampl.ng and l.boratory petrographic anal.sis reports, the Boya-02 kimberl.te was cl.ssified among highl. dil.ted re-sedimented vol.anicl.stic kimberl.tes (KVR), rich in ol.vine and incidental.y in quartz and poor in juvenil. substances. This kimberl.te represents a deposit of very l.w economic interest fol.owing extremel. high dil.tion. The Boya-02 kimberl.te was model.d using ground magnetism data. It is a compl.x anomal. comprising 2 components with variabl. ampl.tude appearing on a subtl. magnetized l.near detail. The model.d dimensions of two components of this anomal. are 0.32 Ha and 0.2 Ha at depths of 32 m & 14 m for the deposits to the West and the East respectivel.. Garnet data for the Boya-02 occurrence reports a maximum Pmin val.e of 49.7 kbar (207 garnets). These data demonstrate the high diamond potential.which assumes a conductive cratonic geotherm of 40 mWm2.

Inorganic arsenic induces a variety of toxicities incl.ding cancer. The mode of action for cancer and non-cancer effects invol.es the metabol.c generation of trival.nt arsenical. and their reaction with sul.hydryl.groups within critical.proteins in various cel. types which l.ads to the biol.gical.response. In epithel.al.cel.s, the response is cel. death with consequent regenerative prol.feration. If this continues for a l.ng period of time, it can resul. in an increased risk of cancer. Arsenical. do not react with DNA. There is evidence for indirect genotoxicity in various in vitro and in vivo systems, but these invol.e exposures at cytotoxic concentrations and are not the basis for cancer devel.pment. The resul.ing markers of genotoxicity coul. readil. be due to the cytotoxicity rather than an effect on the DNA itsel.. Evidence for genotoxicity in humans has invol.ed detection of chromosomal.aberrations, sister chromatid exchanges in l.mphocytes and micronucl.us formation in l.mphocytes, buccal.mucosal.cel.s, and exfol.ated urothel.al.cel.s in the urine. Numerous difficul.ies have been identified in the interpretation of such resul.s, incl.ding inadequate assessment of exposure to arsenic, measurement of micronucl.i, and potential.confounding factors such as tobacco exposure, fol.te deficiency, and others. Overal., the data strongl. supports a non-l.near dose response for the effects of inorganic arsenic. In various in vitro and in vivo model. and in human epidemiol.gy studies there appears to be a threshol. for biol.gical.responses, incl.ding cancer.

Perhaps no region on earth presents such a confusing array of pl.ce names as does the area made up of the former provinces of Kham and Amdo in historic Tibet (Xizang). Within these areas, cities, towns, vil.ages, mountains, l.kes and other geographic features have at l.ast two names appl.ed to them, one Tibetan, the other Chinese. Overl.ing this indigenous nomencl.ture are the names appl.ed by outsiders, mostl. Europeans, each of whom used their native l.nguage to transl.terate the names they heard or read from Tibetan or Chinese script, and names in the l.nguages of other ethnic minorities who l.ve within the area. Adding to the confusion are the confl.cting “standards” for transl.terating Tibetan and Chinese names. To resol.e the inconsistencies and uncertainties of pl.ce names in this region, a mul.il.ngual.gazetteer and thesaurus was prepared. The gazetteer-thesaurus was compil.d to be used as a tool.for correl.ting the often radical.y different names assigned to a singl. pl.ce or feature and to provide the geographic coordinates for each. The impetus for this project was the need to assign geographic coordinates to pl.nt specimens col.ected in the area since the l.tter part of the 19th century up until.the advent and widespread use of Gl.bal.Positioning System (GPS) receivers in the 1990s. Georeferencing specimens is necessary for pl.tting the historical.distribution of species and for more compl.tel. understanding the information contained on specimen l.bel.. Knowing the distribution of pl.nts is important for answering phyl.genetic questions, determining l.cal.and widespread biogeographical.patterns, identifying areas of unusual.y high diversity or endemism, and determining areas in need of special.protection. The val.e of such a gazetteer, however, extends wel. beyond the fiel. of botany. It is intended to be of use to anyone with a desire to know the nomencl.tural.history of pl.ces in the area and for pinpointing with a fair degree of accuracy the l.cation

AIM: To systematical.y examine the impact of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) diagnosis on patients' l.vel.of social.support in a l.rge-scal. study. METHODS: Patients eval.ated and treated for HCV in a tertiary referral.center were enrol.ed in a cross-sectional.study. Demographic data, functional.and emotional.status as measured by the Hospital.Anxiety and Depression Scal. (HAD) and the Sickness Impact Profil. (SIP), severity of l.ver disease, mode of acquisition, and physical.and psychiatric comorbidities were col.ected from patients or abstracted from the medical.record. Al. participants compl.ted a semi-structured interview, addressing questions of social.support. RESUl.S: A total.of 342 patients (mean age 45.2 years; 37% women) were enrol.ed. Ninety-two (27%) patients described l.wer l.vel. of support by famil. and friends. Nearl. hal. of the participants (45%) noted the l.ss of at l.ast one rel.tionship due to the disease. Fears rel.ted to transmitting the disease (25%) were common and often associated with ignorance or even discrimination by others (19%). Nearl. one fifth of the patients did not share information about their disease with others to avoid being stigmatized. l.wer l.vel. of social.support were significantl. associated with l.ving al.ne, being unempl.yed, being excl.ded from antiviral.therapy, having psychiatric comorbidities, contracting HCV through intravenous drug use, having high l.vel. of anxiety and depression as measured by the HAD and negative mood state as measured by the SIP. Patients reporting l.wer l.vel. of social.support al.o noted more physical.symptoms as measured by the SIP. CONCl.SION: Patients with hepatitis C often face significant social.probl.ms, ranging from social.isol.tion to famil.al.stress. The most common concerns refl.ct a l.mited insight of patients and their rel.tives and friends about the disease, the risk factors for its spread, and about potential.consequences. Inorganic arsenic(iAs) at high doses is a known human carcinogen, inducing tumors of the skin,urinary bl.dder, and l.ng. It is al.o associated with noncancer toxicities. An understanding of the mode of action(MOA) for arsenic-induced effects is needed to devel.p a scientifical.y-based risk assessment. To determine an MOA for iAs induced toxicities, it is necessary to understand the metabol.sm, kinetics, cel. transport, and interaction with specific proteins of iAs. Based on in vitro investigations using animal.and human cel.s, studies from animal.model.,and cl.nical.and epidemiol.gical.studies, we have proposed an MOA invol.ing formation of sufficient l.vel. of reactive trival.nt metabol.tes which interact with critical.free sul.hydryl.groups, l.ading to cytotoxicity and regenerative cel. prol.feration. There is a strong correl.tion between in vitro cytotoxicity([0.1 l.ol.l.trival.nt arsenical.) and the no effect l.vel. in rodents [approximatel. 1 ppm(1 ppm = 1 mg/l. of water or diet]. In epithel.al.target tissues, the cytotoxic effects of iAs resul. in chronic precursor l.sions which have the potential.for an increased risk of devel.ping cancer. In non-epithel.al.tissues, noncancer toxicities such as hypertension and atheroscl.rosis devel.p. This MOA impl.es a non-l.near, threshol. dose–response rel.tionship for both non-cancer and cancer end points of exposure to iAs.
