Efficacy of glycyrrhizin combined with cyclosporine in the treatment of non-severe aplastic anemia

Background Cyclosporine A （CsA） has been widely used in the treatment of aplastic anemia （AA）, but the application of CsA was limited in patients who had liver diseases or abnormal liver function due to its liver toxicity. Glycyrrhizin has long been used in China in the treatment of various liver diseases to lower transaminases. In this study, we observed the efficacy and safety of glycyrrhizic acid combined with CsA in the treatment of newly diagnosed patients with non-severe AA （NSAA）. Methods A total number of 76 patients with newly diagnosed NSAA were enrolled into the study at our hospital between July 2005 and June 2010. The patients were divided randomly into two groups： the glycyrrhizin-treatment group （group A） and the control group （group B） with 38 patients in each group. All patients received 3-5 mg·kg^-1·d^-1 CsA for at least 4 months and were treated either with or without glycyrrhizin for 4 months. Results sixty-eight patients were eligible for evaluation. In the control group, 9.09% patients （n=3） achieved a complete response while 51.52% （n=17） attained a partial response. The overall response rate was 60.61% （n=20）. The remaining 13 patients （39：39%） did not have any response. In the glycyrrhizin-treatment group, complete response rate was 20% （n=7） and partial response rate was 62.86% （n=22）. The overall response rate was 82.86% （n=29） and the non-response rate was 17.14% （n=6）. Response rate was significantly increased with the addition of glycyrrhizin to CsA compared with CsA alone （P〈0.05）. Conclusion The combination of glycyrrhizin and cyclosporine regimen was an effective treatment for NSAA in terms of improvement of response rate, reduction in CsA-related liver injury, and attenuation of severity of nausea and other adverse events in the treatment of patients with NSAA.

Background Multiple epiphysis dysplasia （MED） is a common skeletal dysplasia with a significant locus heterogeneity. In the majority of clinically ***, mutations have been identified in the gene encoding cartilage algometric matrix protein （ COMP）. Methods Five patients were included in the study. Linkage analysis and mutation analysis of the COMP gene were conducted in the patients and their family members. Results We have identified a novel mutation in axon 14 of COMP gene in the family. Conclusions This mutation produced a severe MED phenotype with marked short stature, early onset osteoarthritis, and remarkable radiographic changes. Our results extended the range of disease-causing mutations in COMP gene and contributed more information about relationship between mutations and phenotype.

Surface acoustic wave(SAW) resonators with an ultrahigh Q-factor are designed and fabricated on silicon-based gallium nitride(GaN/Si). The temperature-dependent performance is characterized over a wide range, from 10 to 500 K. Finite element analysis is employed to guide the design of the SAW resonator from indications of the Rayleigh mode and weak propagation direction dependence of SAW in the c-plane of GaN/Si. The SAW resonator with 100 pairs of interdigital transducers(IDT), 100 pairs of grating reflectors(GR) for each side, aperture size of 80 μm, metallization ratio of 0.5, and electrode width of 500 nm resonates at 1.9133 GHz accordingly with an ultrahigh Q-factor of 7622 at room temperature, which contributes the fr× Qr, up to 14.583×1012Hz. A resonator operating over 10 to 500 K indicates an approximately linear decreasing temperature dependence above 280 K while being approximately constant below 40 K. The fitting to resonator characteristics using the modified Butterworth Van Dyke(m BVD) model reveals a reduction in both the electrode and mechanical losses while worsening the dielectric loss with cooling down.

Over-the-air computation(airComp)has recently emerged as a promising multiple-access technique for fast wireless data aggregation(WDA)from distributed wireless devices(WDs). This paper investigates an energy harvesting (EH) airComp system, in which multiple EH-powered single-antenna WDs simultaneously send wireless signals to a single-antenna access point (AP) with conventional energy supply for WDA via airComp. Under this setup, we minimize the average computation mean square error(MSE)over a particular time period, by jointly optimizing the transmit energy allocation at the WDs and the airComp denoising factors at the AP over time, subject to the energy causality constraints at individual WDs. First, we consider the offline scenario by assuming that the energy state information(ESI)and channel state information (CSI) are non-causally known at the beginning of the period, in which the formulated average MSE minimization corresponds to a non-convex optimization problem. We present a high-quality converged solution by using the techniques of alternating optimization and convex optimization. It is shown that for each WD,if the EH rate is sufficiently high,then the channel inversion power allocation is adopted;while if the EH rate is low, then all the harvested energy should be used up for transmission with proper energy allocation over time. Next, we consider the online scenario with causal ESI and CSI,in which the MSE minimization becomes a stochastic optimization *** this scenario, we present an offline-inspired online algorithm to obtain efficient online energy allocation designs by utilizing the obtained offline solutions. Finally,numerical results show that the proposed designs significantly outperform two benchmark schemes with power-halving and full-power transmission,respectively.

Morphological Classification of Infrared Galaxies Based on WISE
