Fibrogenesis imperfecta ossium is a rare disorder of bone usually characterized by marked osteopenia and associated with variable osteoporosis and osteosclerosis, changing over time. Histological examination shows that newly formed collagen is abnormal, lacking birefringence when examined by polarized light. The case presented demonstrates these features and, in addition, a previously undocumented finding of a persistent marked reduction of the serum C3 and C4. Osteoblasts established in culture from a bone biopsy showed abnormal morphology on electron microscopy and increased proliferation when cultured with benzoylbenzoyl-ATP and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin d, contrasting with findings in normal osteoblasts in culture. A gene microarray study showed marked upregulation of the messenger RNA(mRNA) for G-protein-coupled receptor 128(GPR 128), an orphan receptor of unknown function and also of osteoprotegerin in the patient's osteoblasts in culture. When normal osteoblasts were cultured with the patient's serum, there was marked upregulation of the mRNA for aquaporin 1. A single pathogenetic factor to account for the features of this disorder has not been defined, but the unique findings described here may facilitate more definitive investigation of the abnormal bone cell function.

The idea of using ultrashort X-ray pulses to obtain images of single proteins frozen in time has fascinated and inspired *** was one of the arguments for building X-ray free-electron *** to theory,the extremely intense pulses provide sufficient signal to dispense with using crystals as an amplifier,and the ultrashort pulse duration permits capturing the diffraction data before the sample inevitably *** was first demonstrated on biological samples a decade ago on the giant *** then,a large collaboration has been pushing the limit of the smallest sample that can be *** ability to capture snapshots on the timescale of atomic vibrations,while keeping the sample at room temperature,may allow probing the entire conformational phase space of *** we show the first observation of an X-ray diffraction pattern from a single protein,that of Escherichia coli GroEL which at 14 nm in diameter is the smallest biological sample ever imaged by X-rays,and demonstrate that the concept of diffraction before destruction extends to single *** the pattern,it is possible to determine the approximate orientation of the *** experiment demonstrates the feasibility of ultrafast imaging of single proteins,opening the way to single-molecule time-resolved studies on the femtosecond timescale.

Suicidal drug overdose is a major public health *** the United States,every year more than 33,000 people commit *** study focused on the characteristics of suicide victims in the state of *** and methods:This study was a retrospective review of autopsy cases of all suicide deaths caused by drug(s)or drug(s)with alcohol intoxication investigated by the OCME in Maryland over a 7-year period from January 2004 to december *** deaths investigated by the OCME that require autopsy examination are subject to comprehensive toxicology testing for drugs and *** screen tests were performed using gas chromatography(GC)and radioimmunoassay *** detected drugs and/or metabolites were confirmed using GC-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).Results:From 2004 to 2011,434 deaths were certified as *** the 434 suicidal overdose deaths,84%were white,11%were African-American,and about 5%were either Hispanic or *** male and female ratio was almost *** ages ranged 15-82 *** the 434 suicidal drug overdose deaths,277 victims(63.8%)consumed a single drug type and 157(36.2%)consumed more than one type of *** the 277 single-drug overdose cases,71.1%suicides were due to prescription drugs,23.5%due to over-the-counter drugs,and 5.4%due to street/recreational *** single-type prescription drugs,analgesic(N=76),antidepressant(N=45),and neuroleptic(N=35)classes were the three leading type of drugs used in suicidal ***,morphine,quetiapine,and amitriptyline were the most common prescription drugs in suicidal *** was the leading over-the-counter *** the 157 victims who consumed more than one drug,combined prescription drugs were present in 54.1%,mixed prescription and overthe-counter drugs in 29.3%,and prescription drugs/over-the-counter drugs and street drugs in 16.6%of *** the multiple-drug overdose suicides,66.2%cases involved ***:Suicide is found in every age,

First Reported Incidence of delayed Secondary Abdominal Compartment Syndrome in a Trauma Patient with Scleroderma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Background: Scleroderma is a complex immune-mediated rheumatic disease that is characterized by fibrosis of the skin, internal organs, and vasculopathy. Extensive fibrosis, especially in the limited compartment, has been reported to induce acute compartment syndrome frequently reported involving the upper and lower extremities. Case Presentation: We present a rare case of a 54-year-old Caucasian female who underwent surgery for abdominal compartment syndrome in the setting of scleroderma. Upon arrival, at the hospital, the patient’s health status showed signs of improvement with no indicators of abdominal compartment syndrome until the tenth hospital day. A CT scan showed a new intra-abdominal fluid collection with total lower abdominal anasarca and a stable retroperitoneal hematoma. Following emergency surgery, significant bowel edema without other intra-abdominal injuries was noted. Conclusion: Secondary abdominal compartment syndrome may occur in patients with scleroderma without evidence of intra-abdominal trauma or emergent abdominal surgery. Further research is warranted to investigate the relationship between scleroderma and secondary abdominal compartment syndrome.

为探明作物-草地轮作系统中草地土壤碳(Carbon,C)蓄积与矿化动态特征,本试验以温带气候区有机农牧场低投入蔬菜生产后的5年草地轮作土壤为研究对象,测定不同轮作年限和季节土壤有机碳(Soil Organic Carbon,SOC)及其颗粒有机碳(Particulate Organic Carbon,POC)和非颗粒有机碳(non-Particulate Organic Carbon,n-POC)组分含量,并对土壤C矿化潜力进行分析。结果表明,草地轮作年限显著影响SOC含量(Pd的培养期内平均C矿化速率为5.9μg·g^-1·d^-1,显著低于其他季节。草地轮作增强了土壤C矿化潜力,提高了土壤C循环强度和有机C有效性,同时延长了SOC半衰期,对增加土壤C库容量和稳定性具有重要作用。

【目的】评价豌豆属(Pisum L.)2个种5个亚种下,共8个资源类群的遗传多样性水平,揭示豌豆属下资源群体结构及其遗传关系远近,验证传统植物学分类的可靠程度,为充分发掘、利用豌豆野生种质提供必要信息。【方法】利用21对豌豆多态性SSR引物,对来自世界5大洲62个国家的豌豆属94份栽培种质(*** *** ***)及其1个近缘野生种(***),3个野生亚种(*** ***、*** ***、*** ***)和3个野生变种(*** *** ***、*** *** ***、*** ***)的103份野生种质进行SSR标记遗传多样性分析;利用NTSYSpc2.2d软件估算其遗传距离,进行主成分分析(PCA)并绘制三维空间聚类图;利用Popgene V1.32估算种质群间的Nei78遗传距离等参数并进行UPGMA聚类分析,采用MEGA3.1绘制种质群间聚类图;采用Popgene V1.32估算种质群的等位位点分布等参数,利用Fstat V2.***.3.2进行种质群间遗传多样性差异显著性测验。【结果】21对豌豆多态性SSR引物共扩增出104条多态性带,每对引物平均扩增出4.95个等位变异,其中有效等位变异占65.56%;PSAd270,PSAC58,PSAA18,PSAC75,PSAA175和PSAB72等SSR引物最为有效。SSR等位变异在豌豆属植物学分类单位中分布均匀,但分类单位种质群间的遗传多样性在多数情况下差异显著。豌豆属野生种***的遗传多样性远低于栽培种***;豌豆栽培种下,*** *** ***和*** ***的遗传多样性最高,*** *** ***和*** ***次之,*** *** ***、*** *** ***和***最低。PCA分析发现,豌豆属种质资源由4个差异明显的基因库构成。"fulvum"基因库主要由野生种Pisum fulvum资源构成,"abyssinicum"基因库主要由栽培种下的*** ***亚种资源构成,"arvense"基因库主要由栽培种下的*** ***变种资源构成;"sativum"基因库由*** ***、*** *** ***、*** ***、*** *** ***和*** *** ***资源构成。"sativum"基因库构成豌豆栽培资源初级基因库;"fulvum"、"abyssinicum"和"arvense"基因库共同构成豌豆栽培资源次级基因库。植物学分类单位间的Nei78遗传距离介于7.531～35.956,UPGMA聚类方法将豌豆属植物学分类单位聚成3个组群,"组群I"对应"sativum"和"arvense"基因库之和,"组群II"对应"abyssinicum"基因库,"组群III"对应"fulvum"基因库,聚类结果支持4个基因库的划分。【结论】豌豆属下多数植物学分类单位间遗传多样性差异显著,并分化成4个基因库。研究结果部分支持豌豆属下传统的植物学分类体系,并指出了其合理与不足之处。为拓宽豌豆育成品种的遗传基础,应充分发掘豌豆属下各基因库的遗传潜力。

A comparison of methods used to determine the oleic/linoleic acid ratio in cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

There is an increasing demand in the peanut industry for high oleic peanuts and also for the incorporation of the high oleate trait into newly released varieties. Early generation screening of breeding lines for high oleic acid content greatly increases the efficiency of developing new peanut varieties. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of methods used to classify individual peanut seed as high oleic or not high oleic. Results from capillary electrophoresis (CE), two variations of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS), and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) genotyping, were compared with the traditionally accepted reference standard results from gas chromatography (GC). Three hundred and seventy-four (374) seeds, spanning twenty-three (23) genotypes and all four peanut market-types (runner, Spanish, Valencia and Virginia), were individually tested by each method. Percent accuracy levels for rating individual seed as high oleic (H) ranged from 97.4% (NIRS) to 99.5% (CE). All of the methods examined in this study carry only a minor risk for miss-classification (loss of material) and are suitable for use by peanut breeding programs in early generation breeding line screening.

Post-weaning and whole-of-life performance of pigs is determined by live weight at weaning and the complexity of the diet fed after weaning

The production performance and financial outcomes associated with weaner diet complexity for pigs of different weight classes at weaning were examined in this experiment. A total of 720 weaner pigs(360 entire males and 360 females) were selected at weaning(27 ± 3 d) and allocated to pens of 10 based on individual weaning weight(light weaning weight: pigs below 6.5 kg; medium weaning weight: 6.5 to8 kg; heavy weaning weight: above 8.5 kg). Pens were then allocated in a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with the respective factors being weaning weight(heavy, medium and light; H, M and L,respectively), weaner diet complexity(high complexity/cost, HC; low complexity/cost, LC), and gender(male and female). Common diets were fed to both treatment groups during the final 4 weeks of the weaner period(a period of 39 days). In the first 6 d after weaning, pigs offered the HC diets gained weight faster and used feed more efficiently than those offered the LC diets(P = 0.031). Pigs fed a HC diet after weaning tended to be heavier at the sale live weight of 123 d of age compared with pigs fed the LC diet(P = 0.056). There were no other main effects of the feeding program on growth performance through to slaughter. Weaning weight had a profound influence on lifetime growth performance and weight at 123 d of age, with H pigs at weaning increasing their weight advantage over the M and L pigs(101.3,97.1, 89.6 kg respectively, P d there was a minimal benefit in terms of cost per unit live weight gain over lifetime when pigs were offered a HC feeding program to L,with a lower feed cost/kg gain. The results from this investigation confirm the impact of weaning weight on lifetime growth performance, and suggest that a HC feeding program should be focused on L weaner pigs(i.e., weaning weight less than 6.5 kg at 27 d of age) in order to maximise financial returns.
