Neointimal coverage of sirolimus-eluting stents 6 months and 12 months after implantation： evaluation by optical coherence tomography

Optical coherence tomography （OCT） is a new imaging modality with resolution of approximately 10 pm and can be employed to visualize intracoronary characteristics. Sirolimus-eluting stents （SES） are susceptible to late thrombosis due to delayed reendothelialization over the stent struts, which may result in acute myocardial infarction or death. This study was designed to evaluate the re-endothelialization and neointimal coverage of SES with OCT 6 months and 12 months after *** A total of 36 patients enrolled in the study underwent OCT examination 6 months （17 patients） and 12 months （19 patients） after SES implantation, The strut apposition to the vessel wall and neointimal coverage on SES struts were evaluated by OCT, results Forty-six SES and 6561 struts were analyzed, At 6 months, 3041 struts （98.7%） were well-apposed and 39 struts （1,3%） were malapposed, At 12 months, 3434 struts （98,6%） were well-apposed and 47 struts （1,4%） were malapposed, Furthermore, only 4 SES at 6 months （18,2%） and 10 SES at 12 months （41,7%） were fully covered by neointimal growth, The average neointimal thicknesses covering the analyzed struts at 6 months and 12 months were （42±28） μm and （88±32） μm, respectively, There were 1989 struts at 6 months （72,1%） and 1461 struts at 12 months （45,6%） with neointimal thickness 〈100 μm, Conclusions OCT was able to visualize the strut apposition to the vessel wall and neointimal coverage on SES struts, At 6-month and 12-month follow-up examinations most struts were covered with thin neointima, but few of the entire SES showed full coverage. To prevent late-stent thrombosis in the presence of uncovered stent struts, longer dual antiplatelet drugs therapy should be recommended,

Controllable fabrication of carbon aerogels

Nano-pore carbon aerogels were prepared by the sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol (1,3-dihydroxybenzene)(C6H4(OH)2) with formaldehyde (HCHO) in a slightly basic aqueous solution, followed by super-critical drying under liquid carbon dioxide as super-critical media and carbonization at 700 ℃ under N2 gas atmosphere. The key of the work is to fabricate carbon aerogels with controllable nano-pore structure, which means extremely high surface area and sharp pore size distribution. Aiming to investigate the effects of preparation conditions on the gelation process, the bulk density, and the physical and chemical structure of the resultant carbon aerogels, the molar ratio of r/C (resorcinol to catalyst) and the amount of distilled water were varied, consequently two different sets of samples, with series of r/C ratio and rF/W (resorcinol-Formaldehyde to water, or the content of reactant) ratio, were prepared. The result of N2 adsorption/desorption experiment at 77 K shows that the pore sizes decreasing from 11.4 down to 2.2 nm with the increasing of the molar ratio of r/C from 100 to 400, and/or, the pore sizes decreasing from 3.8 down to 1.6 nm with the increasing of reactant content from 0.4 to 0.6.

Numerical Investigation on Detonation Wave through U-bend

Pulse detonation engine (PDE) is expected for a next-generation propulsion system. PDE is a promising engine that can generates power and thrust by using intermittent detonation. Promotion of deflagration to detonation transition (below DDT) is a key issue to realize this system. PDE has experimentally been investigated, and it was confirmed that detonation tubes with U-shaped bends are useful for fast DDT. However, the mechanism of DDT promotion due to U-bends has not been well clarified. In the present study, the influence of a U-bend on detona-tion wave propagation is researched with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The numerical results show that detonation wave disappears once near the U-bend inlet and restarts after passing through it. In addition, it was found that the use of the U-bend with small channel width and curvature radius can induce fast DDT.

How does the 120-year cycle mast seeding of dwarf bamboo affect the rodent population?

Spatiotemporal changes in antlerless proportion of culled Sika deer in relation to deer density

Population management of herbivores is widely applied to decrease damage to forests in the northern hemisphere. Culling more antlerless deer, including females and fawns, is an effective means of reducing the population and helps to improve management efficiency. To increase the efficiency of antlerless-biased culling, we assessed the spatiotemporal distribution of the antlerless ratio in culled sika deer (Cervus nippon) in relation to population density. We hypothesized that the antlerless ratio is higher at the center of the distribution than at the margins of the deer’s range, because dispersal processes differ according to sex and age: Young male deer first disperse into an unoccupied area, and then males may become established in the new area for approximately 10–15 years before the number of females increases. A statistical model revealed spatiotemporal changes in the antlerless ratio of culled sika deer. The change in the ratio basically fit the density distribution of the deer, which was estimated independently on the basis of fecal pellet count surveys. The antlerless ratio estimated from the model increased asymptotically as deer density rose. The results support our hypothesis and suggest that antlerless sika deer will be more easily culled at the center rather than at the margins of the distribution range. These findings should help to increase the efficiency of managing the deer via antlerless-biased culling.

To retrieve the fuel debris in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants(1F),it is essential to infer the fuel debris *** particular,the molten metal spreading behavior is one of the vital phenomena in nuclear severe accidents because it determines the initial condition for further accident scenarios such as molten core concrete interaction(MCCI).In this study,the fundamental molten metal spreading experiments were performed with different outlet diameters and sample amounts to investigate the effect of the outlet for spreading-solidification *** the numerical analysis,the moving particle full-implicit method(MPFI),which is one of the particle methods,was applied to simulate the spreading *** the MPFI framework,the melting-solidification model including heat transfer,radiation heat loss,phase change,and solid fraction-dependent viscosity was developed and *** addition,the difference in the spreading and solidification behavior due to the outlet diameters was reproduced in the *** simulation results reveal the detailed solidification procedure during the molten metal *** is found that the viscosity change and the solid fraction change during the spreading are key factors for the free surface condition and solidified ***,it is suggested that the MPFI method has the potential to simulate the actual nuclear melt-down phenomena in the future.
