＜正＞ In inflammation the post-transcriptional regulation of transiently expressed genes provides a potential therapeutic target. One of the factors regulating cytokine expression at posttranscriptional level is tristetraprolin （TTP）, which is known to desta bilize TNF-α and IL-6 mrNAs. The aim of the present study was to identify cytokines. whose expression is regulated by TTP. We established a TTP knock-down cell line by expressing shrNA against TTP （shTTP cell line）. A cytokine antibody array was used to measure cytokine production in macrophages exposed to LPS. The LPS-induced production of five cytokines （IL-6, IL-12, MP-2, MIP-3α and TNF-α） was altered in shTTP cells as compared to control cells suggesting that the expression of these five cytokines is regulated by TTP. Cytokines IL-6, IL-12, TNF-α and MIP-2 （a homologue to human IL-8） were expressed at higher levels whereas MIP-3α was produced at lower levels in shTTP cells than in control cells. The present data provides novel inflammatory cytokine targets for TTP-mediated mrNA decay. Understanding the mechanisms controlling the mrNA stability of cytokine genes provides targets for treatment of inflammatory diseases.

＜正＞ The balance between anabolic and catabolic mediators is critical in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis （OA）. Interleukin-1 （IL-1） plays a central role in OA and its destructive effects are partly mediated by nitric oxide （NO） produced by rNOS pathway. In the present study we investigated secretion of 40 mediators regulating cartilage metabolism （ e. g. cytokines and destructive enzymes） by human OA cartilage samples with an antibody microarray （rayBiotech）. The role of NO in the production of these mediators was investigated by using a selective rNOS inhibitor ***: OA cartilage secreted spontaneously 28 out of the 40 measured mediators . IL-1β enhanced production of 26 inflammatory mediators along with increased NO production. Inhibition of NO production with a selective iNOS in- hibitor 1400W enhanced IL-10 production, and reduced the levels of MMP-10. Conclusions: OA cartilage produces many of the mediators involved in the pathogenesis of OA. The ability of 1400W to enhance levels of protective IL-10 and to reduce production of destructive MMP-10 points to the anti-inflammatory and anti-erosive effects that iNOS inhibitors may have in the treatment of OA.

Polygynous males can change their mating tactics across their lifetime, but information is scarce on the flexibility of this trait within a given season and the relative costs and benefits of using different tactics. Here, we monitored individually marked male reindeer rangifer tarandus and classified their mating tactics as harem-defense, sneaking, or mixed. The costs of the male reproductive effort were assessed using both direct （i.e. percentage of body mass lost） and indirect measures （i.e. activity patterns such as feeding, standing, and walking）, while mating group size and reproductive success were recorded as mating ef- fort benefits. Our results show that reindeer males may switch between the harem-defense and sneaking tactics throughout the same breeding season, providing further support to the notion that reproductive tactics are flexible in ungulates. The costs and benefits of male mating effort vary according to the mating tactic, reaching the highest values in harem-holders and the lowest values in sneaking males. Moreover, males who switched between the sneaking tactic and the harem-defence tactic tended to achieve higher mating success than males who consistently used the least costly tactic. Indeed, all harem-holders successfully sired offspring, whereas only two out of three mixed-tactic males sired one calf, and sneaking males did not sire any calves. In conclusion, our results show that reindeer males can modulate their mating efforts during the same breeding season by switching between the most costly harem-defense tactic and the least costly sneaking tactic, suggesting individual solutions to the balance between reproductive effort and mating opportunities [Current Zoology 61 （5）： 802-810, 2015].

Comparison of operative link for gastritis assessment, operative link on gastric intestinal metaplasia assessment, and TAIM stagings among men with atrophic gastritis

BACKGrOUND Gastric cancer is the world’s third most lethal malignancy. Most gastric cancers develop through precancerous states of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia. Two staging systems, operative link for gastritis assessment(OLGA)and operative link on gastric intestinal metaplasia assessment(OLGIM), have been developed to detect high gastric cancer risk. European guidelines recommend surveillance for high-risk OLGA/OLGIM patients(stages Ⅲ–Ⅳ),and for those with advanced stage of atrophic gastritis in the whole stomach mucosa. We hypothesize, that by combining atrophy and intestinal metaplasia into one staging named TAIM, more patients with increased gastric cancer risk could be *** To evaluate the clinical value of the OLGA, OLGIM, and novel TAIM stagings as prognostic indicators for gastric *** In the Helsinki Gastritis Study, 22346 elderly male smokers from southwestern Finland were screened for serum pepsinogen I(PGI). Between the years 1989 and1993, men with low PGI values(PGI re invited to undergo an oesophagogastroduodenoscopy. In this retrospective cohort study, 1147 men that underwent gastroscopy were followed for gastric cancer for a median of 13.7 years, and a maximum of 27.3 years. We developed a new staging system, TAIM,by combining the topography with the severity of atrophy or intestinal metaplasia in gastric biopsies. In TAIM staging, the gastric cancer risk is classified as low or *** Twenty-eight gastric cancers were diagnosed during the follow-up, and the incidence rate was 1.72 per 1000 patient-years. The cancer risk associated positively with TAIM [Hazard ratio(Hr) 2.70, 95%CI: 1.09–6.69, P = 0.03]. Statistically Non-significant Papers in Environmental Health Studies included more Outcome Variables

Objective The number of analyzed outcome variables is important in the statistical analysis and interpretation of research findings. This study investigated published papers in the field of environmental health studies. We aimed to examine whether differences in the number of reported outcome variables exist between papers with non-significant findings compared to those with significant findings. Articles on the maternal exposure to mercury and child development were used as examples. Methods Articles published between 1995 and 2013 focusing on the relationships between maternal exposure to mercury and child development were collected from Medline and Scopus. results Of 87 extracted papers, 73 used statistical significance testing and 38（43.7%） of these reported ＇non-significant＇（P〉0.05） findings. The median number of child development outcome variables in papers reporting ＇significant＇（n=35） and ＇non-significant＇（n=38） results was 4 versus 7, respectively（Mann-Whitney test P-value=0.014）. An elevated number of outcome variables was especially found in papers reporting non-significant associations between maternal mercury and outcomes when mercury was the only analyzed exposure variable. Conclusion Authors often report analyzed health outcome variables based on their P-values rather than on stated primary research questions. Such a practice probably skews the research evidence.

recent advances in wireless sensor technology have enabled simultaneous exploitation of multiple channels in wireless sensor systems. In this paper, a novel time synchronization algorithm is proposed for multi- channel Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) called Multi-Channel Time Synchronization (MCTS) protocol. Time synchronization is critical for many WSN applications and enables efficient communications between sensor nodes along with intelligent spectrum access. Contrary to many existing protocols that do not exploit multi-channel communications, the protocol takes advantage of potential multiple channels and distributes the synchronization of different nodes to distinct channels and thus, reduces the convergence time of synchronization processes significantly.

Effect of Mulching on Uptake of Copper and Nickel from Smelter-Polluted-Soil by Planted Tree Seedlings

Our aim was to determine the long-term effect of a mulching treatment on copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) uptake by tree seedlings (Pinus sylvestris L. and Betula pubescens Ehrh.) from smelter-polluted forest soil in southwesternFinland. A mulch cover spread onto polluted barren soil did not have a clear positive impact on the biomass production and it did not decrease metal uptake by planted tree seedlings during a ten-year study period. In contrast, the Cu uptake by the above-ground parts of birch was increased as a result of mulching, although there were weak indications of slightly reduced availability of Cu and Ni to roots in the case of both species. As Cu and Ni concentrations of foliage and bark have been shown to be strongly affected by surface deposited metal containing aerosols, only the woody compartments were used as indicators of metal uptake from soil. The Cu:Ni ratios of woody compartments were lower than those predicted by the Cu:Ni ratios of soil suggesting that the soil extraction method used gives an underestimation of available Ni in relation to Cu. The lower soil Niexch concentrations on the mulched plots compared to the controls were in agreement with the slightly lower root Ni concentrations in the mulch treatments.

The purpose of this study was to compare plate and conical refiner fillings in refining of softwood and hardwood pulp fibers. Contrary to expectations, better tensile strength values were achieved when BSW was refined with conical fillings and the development of strength was found to be insensitive to variations in refining intensity. A bar microprofile was measured with the aid of a profilometer. The leading edges of conical filling bars were found to be rounder. A possible reason for the better tensile strength of pulp refined with conical fillings is that the round edge helps large SW fiber flocs to enter the space between the bars, resulting in less heterogeneous or more efficient treatment of fibers. The recorded gap closure values supported the above interpretation. The gap between conical fillings was found to become wider when pulp consistency and thus fiber flocculation increased, whereas increased pulp consistency decreased the gap between plate fillings, which was further reflected as increased fiber cutting. The reduction in fiber length was proportional to the increase in gap closure, supporting the earlier theory that fibers are squeezed and crushed between the bars. More attention should be paid to the wear of filling materials when refining BSW. A filling material which wears so that the bar edges are rounded would seem to promote high tensile strength and high average fiber length.

New Levels in ^118Pd Observed in the β Decay of Very Neutron-rich ^118rh Isotope

We investigate the β decay of very neutron-rich ^118rh isotope using on-line mass-separated sources which are produced by applying 25 MeV proton induced symmetric fission of natural uranium at the IGISOL facility. The β-γ and γ-γ coincidence spectroscopy is employed to establish the level scheme of daughter nucleus ^118Pd. Five low-lying new levels are identified for the first time with tentative spin and parity assignments based on the even-mass Pd systematics.
