This paper describes the phenomenological ethics implicit in Heidegger＇s later work. It is argued that these phenomenological ethics take the form of a perfectionist ethics in which one consciously resists the temptation to nihilistically enframe other entities as Bestand. Despite Heidegger＇s reputation as an inferior animal philosopher, it is then argued that we can employ this ethics to improve our relationship with non-human animals. Specifically, our use of them in the agricultural setting is examined to determine whether or not our current practices are ethical according to Heidegger＇s normative model. Ultimately it is concluded that, more often than not, animals are harmed both ontically and ontologically by our modem farming practices. We are called on instead to try to dwell meditatively with other entities, to be-with them in such a way that respects them as inexhaustibly meaningful instantiations of being as such. This requires changes to the way in which we satisfy our needs as consumers.

Approximately 30% of patients with rectal cancer present with metastatic disease. Many of these patients have symptoms of bleeding or obstruction. Several treatment options are available to deal with the various complications that may afflict these patients. Endorectal stenting, laser ablation, and operative resection are a few of the options available to the patient with a malignant large bowel obstruction. A thorough understanding of treatment options will ensure the patient is offered the most effective therapy with the least amount of associated morbidity. In this review, we describe various options for palliation of symptoms in patients with metastatic rectal cancer. Additionally, we briefly discuss treatment for asymptomatic patients with metastatic disease.

Western blotting is a highly valued method for protein identification and relative quantitation in complex samples. It combines size-based electrophoretic separation with immunoaffinity to identify specific proteins. This technique remains popular and has become a workhorse in biochemical research and clinical laboratories. Despite its utility and popularity, this method has many limitations including slow analysis, incompatibility with limited sample application, low throughput and low information content. recently there has been significant success in improving different aspects of Western blotting. In this review, we provide an overview of the developments in the area of improving conventional Western blotting methods with a focus on recent developments in microfluidic Western blotting. We overview different separation platforms, and discuss studies on protein transfer methods as well as protein immobilization methods and chemistries. We also describe integrated miniaturized platforms that can perform rapid separations and immunodetections.

Community-based watershed management is different from the traditional natural resources management. Traditional natural resources management is a way from up to bottom, but the community-based watershed management is from bottom to up. This approach focused on the joining of different stakeholders in integrated watershed management, especially the participation of the community who has been ignored in the past. The purpose of this paper is to outline some of the important basic definitions, concepts and operational framework for initiating community-based watershed management projects and programs as well as some successes and practical challenges associated with the approach.

Land cover is a fundamental variable that links many facets of the natural environment and a key driver of global environmental *** in its status can have significant ramifications at local,regional and global ***,it is imperative to map land cover at a range of spatial and temporal scales with a view to understanding the inherent patterns for effective characterization,prediction and management of the potential environmental *** paper presents the results of an effort to map land cover patterns in Kinangop division,Kenya,using geospatial *** is a geographic locality that has experienced rapid land use transformations since Kenya's independence culminating in uncontrolled land cover changes and loss of *** changes in land use/cover constrain the natural resource base and presuppose availability of quantitative and spatially explicit land cover data for understanding the inherent patterns and facilitating specific and multi-purpose land use planning and *** such,the study had two objectives viz.(i) mapping the spatial patterns of land cover in Kinangop using remote sensing and GIS and;(ii) evaluating the quality of the resultant land cover *** satellite imagery acquired in January 23,2007 was procured and field data gathered between September l0 and October 16,*** latter were used for training the maximum likelihood classifier and validating the resultant land cover *** land cover classification yielded 5 classes,overall accuracy of 83.5%and kappa statistic of 0.79,which conforms to the acceptable standards of land cover mapping. This qualifies its application in environmental decision-making and manifests the utility of geospatial techniques in mapping land resources.

Photoluminescence properties of a novel orange-red emitting Ba_2CaZn_2Si_6O_(17):Sm^(3+)phosphor

Novel orange-red emitting Ba_2Ca_（1–x）Zn_2Si_6O_（17）：x Sm^（3＋）（0.02≤x≤0.08） phosphors were synthesized using conventional solid-state reaction method under air atmosphere. The phase formation of the samples was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction patterns. Scanning electron microscopy（SEM） and photoluminescence properties were also investigated. The narrow excitation and emission spectra indicated the typical 4f-4f transitions of Sm^（3＋）. The dominant excitation line was around 405 nm attributed to ~6H_（5/2）→ ~4F_（7/2） and the emission spectrum consisted of four emission peaks at 562, 600, 647, and 708 nm corresponding to the various transitions ~4G_（5/2） to ~6HJ（J=5/2, 7/2, 9/2 and 11/2） of the Sm^（3＋） ions in the same order. The strongest emission band located at 600 nm was attributed to ~4G_（5/2）→~6H_（7/2） transition of Sm^（3＋）, producing bright orange-red color emission. The optimal dopant concentration of Sm3＋ ion in Ba_2CaZn_2Si_6O_（17）：x Sm^（3＋） phosphor was around 4 mol.% and the critical transfer distance（rc） of Sm^（3＋） was calculated to be 2.65 nm. Decay time varied with the Sm^（3＋） concentrations in Ba_2 CaZn_2Si_6O_（17） phosphors. In addition, the Commission International del＇Eclairagethe（CIE） chromaticity coordinates of Ba_2Ca_（0.96）Zn_2Si_6O_（17）：0.04Sm^（3＋） phosphor was located in the orange-red region（0.547, 0.450） and the correlated color temperature（CCT） was 2543 K. The present results indicated that Sm^（3＋） activated Ba_2CaZn_2Si_6O_（17） phosphors may be used as an orange-red emitting phosphor for near-ultraviolet（n-UV） based white light emitting diodes（WLEDs） applications.
