Phenological study of congeneric Myrcia species and Clethra scabra in wetland and drained habitats in a Montane Forest

Although important,phenological studies comparing congeneric species or the same species growing in different habitats are still scarce for the ***,we integrate phylogeny,ecology and biometeorology to verify whether the phenophases of congeneric species Myrcia laruotteana and Myrcia amazonica or Clethra scabra differ when their populations inhabit wetland and drained habitats and to determine what abiotic factors affect the vegetative and reproductive phenophases of these species in distinct habitat *** collected data on phenological events of 80 trees for 1 year in Itacolomi State Park,Brazil,and related them to abiotic local *** to our expectation,the phenophases of the congeneric species did not differ between habitats,but the reproductive phenophases of *** did and was greater in drained *** of *** were affected by the depth of the water table and maximum temperature in the wetland ***,precipitation,maximum temperature and relative humidity influenced Myrcia and Clethra in the drained *** differences between *** populations suggest that this species is phenotypically plastic and can present distinct phenophases depending on the habitat it *** the other hand,the congeneric Myrcia species may have similar phenophases in distinct habitats because of their shared similarities during their *** study provides a better understanding of the ecology of these species and their adaptations to different abiotic *** of this nature are important in a changing world and can inform strategies for adaptive management.

Acute diverticulitis in younger patients:Any rationale for a different approach?

AIM:To compare the natural history and course of acute diverticulitis in a younger age group with an older population and to evaluate whether younger patients should be managed differently. METHODS:This study was a retrospective review of 157 patients treated with acute diverticulitis between January 1,2004 and December 31,*** was stratified according to the Hinchey classification. Patients were divided into 2 populations:group A≤ 50 years(n=31) ;group B>50 years(n=126) .Mean patient follow-up was 15 mo. rESUlTS:The median age was 60 years.A significantly higher proportion of patients in group B presented with complicated diverticulitis(36.5%vs 12.9%,P=0.01) .recurrence was more frequent in group A(25.8%vs 11.1%,P=0.03) and the mean time-torecurrence was shorter(12 mo vs 28 mo,P=0.26) . The most severe recurrent episodes of acute diverticulitis were classified as Hinchey stageⅠand none of the patients required emergency *** multivariate analysis,only age(P=0.024) was identified as an independent prognostic factor for recurrence. CONClUSION:Based on the results of this study,we recommend that diverticulitis management should be based on the severity of the disease and not on the age of the patient.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). However, the use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Skin is widely used as a drug delivery route due to its easy access and the possibility of using relatively painless methods for the administration of bioactive ***,the barrier properties of the skin,along with its multilayer structure,impose severe restrictions on drug transport and ***,bioengineered models aimed at emulating the skin have been developed not only for optimizing the transdermal transport of different drugs and testing the safety and toxicity of substances but also for understanding the biological processes behind skin *** though in vivo research is often preferred to study biological processes involving the skin,in vitro and ex vivo strategies have been gaining increasing relevance in recent ***,there is a noticeably increasing adoption of in vitro and ex vivo methods by internationally accepted ***,microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices are nowadays emerging as valuable tools for functional and behavioural skin *** in miniaturization,automation and reliability still need to be addressed in order to create skin models that can predict skin behaviour in a robust,high-throughput manner,while being compliant with regulatory issues,standards and *** this review,skin models for transdermal transport,wound repair and cutaneous toxicity will be discussed with a focus on high-throughput *** microfluidic strategies driven by advancements in microfabrication technologies will also be revised as a way to improve the efficiency of existing models,both in terms of complexity and throughput.

Aim： To present a simple technique during penile prosthesis implantation that promotes the perception of increased phallic length. Methods： The penoscrotal web is defined. A ＂check mark＂ incision is made with excision of scrotal tissue. Excellent exposure is provided for implantation of the cylinders, pump and reservoir. Wound closure is performed longitudinally. results： This technique is a modified extension of surgeries described in the pediatric literature for webbed penis. loss of penile length following penile implantation surgery is worrisome for patients suffering from erectile dysfunction （ED）. This technique helps with patient satisfaction, cosmetic results, and improves perception of penile length. Conclusion： Ventral phalloplasty is a safe, technically simple procedure that may be performed in concert with penile prosthesis implantation or as a stand alone procedure under＇certain circumstances.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the action of non-pharmacological interventions, whole body vibration exercise (WBVE) and auriculotherapy (AT) on the management of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) analyzing the handgrip strength (HS). METHODS: One hundred twelve participants with KOA were allocated in (a) WBVE group with peak-to-peak displacement of 2.5 to 7.5 mm, frequency from 5 up to 14 Hz, acceleration peak from 0.12 up to 2.95 g (2 d/weekly for 5 weeks),(b) AT group, points of both ears (Kidney, Knee-correspondent point and Shenmen) were stimulated with seeds,(c) WBVE + AT group and (d) respective control groups. HS was assessed in all the participants, in acute and cumulative responses. rESUlTS: The intervention with WBVE alone and combined with AT improved (P lative response, the HS. CONClUSION: WBVE alone or combined with AT might promote biological effects that interfere with the HS in individuals with KOA.

Gastric cancer in a Caucasian population: role of pepsinogen C genetic variants

AIM： To study the role of an insertion/deletion polymorphism in the pepsinogen C （PGC） gene, an effective marker for terminal differentiation of the stomach mucosa, in the susceptibility to the development of gastric lesions. METHODS： The study was performed with 99 samples of known gastric lesions and 127 samples without evidence of neoplastic disease. PCr was employed and the 6 polymorphic alleles were amplified： Allele 1 （510 bp）, Allele 2 （480 bp）, Allele 3/4 （450/460 bp）, Allele 5 （400 bp） and Allele 6 （310 bp）. rESUlTS： Our results revealed that Allele 6 carriers seemed to have protection against the development of any gastric lesion （Or = 0.34; P 〈 0.001）, non-dysplastic lesions associated with gastric adenocarcinoma such as atrophy or intestinal metaplasia （Or = 0.28; P 〈 0.001） or invasive GC （Or = 0.39; P = 0.004）. CONClUSION： Our study reveals that the Allele 6 carrier status has a protective role in the development of gastric lesions, probably due to its association with higher expression of PGC. Moreover, the frequency of Allele 6 carriers in the control group is far higher than that obtained in Asian populations, which might represent a genetic gap between Caucasian and Asian populations.

Parallel lDPC Decoding on GPUs Using a Stream-Based Computing Approach

low-Density Parity-Check （lDPC） codes are powerful error correcting codes adopted by recent communication standards. lDPC decoders are based on belief propagation algorithms, which make use of a Tanner graph and very intensive message-passing computation, and usually require hardware-based dedicated solutions. With the exponential increase of the computational power of commodity graphics processing units （GPUs）, new opportunities have arisen to develop general purpose processing on GPUs. This paper proposes the use of GPUs for implementing flexible and programmable lDPC decoders. A new stream-based approach is proposed, based on compact data structures to represent the Tanner graph. It is shown that such a challenging application for stream-based computing, because of irregular memory access patterns, memory bandwidth and recursive flow control constraints, can be efficiently implemented on GPUs. The proposal was experimentally evaluated by programming lDPC decoders on GPUs using the Caravela platform, a generic interface tool for managing the kernels＇ execution regardless of the GPU manufacturer and operating system. Moreover, to relatively assess the obtained results, we have also implemented lDPC decoders on general purpose processors with Streaming Single Instruction Multiple Data （SIMD） Extensions. Experimental results show that the solution proposed here efficiently decodes several codewords simultaneously, reducing the processing time by one order of magnitude.

Complicated responses of stalagmite δ ^(13)C to climate change during the last glaciation from Hulu Cave, Nanjing,China

We present a record on carbon stable isotopic composition (δ 13C), covering 75 through 10 thousands years ago (ka B.P.), from Hulu Cave, Nanjing. The overlapping δ 13C pro-files are very similar in pattern and range, indicating that they mainly record climatic signal. Dur-ing the last glacial-interglacial transition, the >6‰ change of δ 13C values implies different con-tributions of C3 vs. C4 type plants in soils. On millennial scale, however, the increased calcite δ 13C during the warm Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events suggests a decrease of dissolved bio-genic CO2 when water flux rate through soil is large. This correlation between heavier δ 13C and higher precipitation is consistent with our previous report on the samples’ stable oxygen isotope records (Wang et al., 2001). Comparison of coeval δ 13C and δ 18O of stalagmites indicates that kinetic fractionation of carbon isotope is closely related to growth rate of stalagmites. This study also shows that local vegetation changes may lag behind precipitation changes by ~700 years during the deglaciation.
