Natural durability of wood of ten native species from northeastern Mexico

Thorn scrub vegetation in Mexico is distributed over 50 million ha, where native tree species are the source of forage, timber, firewood and charcoal. research describing wood durability of species from this vegetation type has not been fully determined, nor classified according to international standards. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine and classify the natural durability of ten woody species. Their natural durability was determined according to the European Pre-Norm 807, the loss of dynamic modulus of elasticity （MOEdyo）（MPa） was determined and wood mass loss （g） after being exposed to Trametes versicolor and Coniophora puteana fungi. Wood durability was classified accord- ing to the European Norm 350-1. Highly significant differences （p 〈 0.001） were found between the durability of woody species. The more durable species with lower MOEdyn lost were Condalia hooked （57.5% ± 0.6%）, Havardia pallens （58.2% ± 0.4%） and Acacia schaffneri （58.9% ±6.3%）. Species with lower mass loss after exposed to Coniophora puteana were Ebenopsis ebano （6.3% ±1.9%）, Condalia hooked （8.6% ±2.3%） and Cordia boissieri （11.8% ±2.3%）. E. ebano （7.1% ±2.4%）, Condalia hooked （8.2% ± 2.5%） and Cordia boissieri （11.5% ± 3.1%） showed the lower mass lost after exposed to T. versicolor. According to European Norm 350-1, three woody species were classified as very durable and durable species.

This study presents an analysis of sediments in an Andean river impacted by both natural conditions and anthropogenic activities. Fifty samples were collected from selected sites throughout the Moquegua river drainage basin, and Tambo river headwaters at Pasto Grande, in Peru, and analysed with X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Si, Ca, Al, Fe, and O, common constituents of soils, were dominant, along with K, N, and P. The latter originating as primary macronutrients or chemical residuals from fertilizers used in agriculture. Higher concentrations of macronutrients and organic components were found in agricultural and urban areas, respectively. Arsenic minerals were also detected, which occur naturally, but possibly at levels augmented by anthropogenic activity. The application of cluster analysis revealed clustering between arsenic, arsenolite, and potassium but no significant geospatial correlation between sample sites in the drainage basin.

At the beginning of 2020, human activities were interrupted by a new virus, identified as SArS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19 disease. The scientific area was no exception: for a certain period, researchers around the world were forced to leave their laboratories and work remotely. There was a global necessity for finding alternatives focused on generating knowledge and publishing data, so repositories of scientific information, such as databases, represented strong support. In the specific case of life sciences, different strategies allowed rapid compilation of data and its sharing worldwide. Therefore, in this work, the impact of the SArS-CoV-2 pandemic on the amount of peer-reviewed and published papers during COVID-19 times was analyzed along with the role of databases. Our results pointed out that an increase in the number of papers belonging to different knowledge fields took place, with the medical field being the most significant. On the other hand, the complete genome of the new virus was sequenced, and repositories were created with sufficient data for monitoring, preventing, and controlling its dissemination. This was the case for the generation of vaccines in addition to potential candidates for drugs against COVID-19. However, although in 2021, vaccines allowed us to gradually return to our activities, databases and the generation of other repositories remain a key point for facing new strains and adapting to a new reality. Finally, this paper discusses joint efforts to tackle the obstacles of the pandemic, not only from a medical but also from the point of view regarding the fight against misinformation.

Beta-thalassemia is delineated as a bunch of heritable blood disorders characterized by abnormalities within the synthesis of beta chains of hemoglobin. Most defects in hemoglobin arise directly from mutations in the structure of the β-globin sequence (HBB). recent advances in computational tools have made it possible to study the relationship between genotype and phenotype in many diseases, including β-thalassemia. Due to the high prevalence of β-thalassemia, these analyses have helped to know the molecular basis in a better way. In this direction, a related database, called HbVar, was developed in 2001 by a collective academic effort to provide quality and up-to-date information on genomic variations that lead to hemoglobinopathies and thalassemia. Within present study, the aim was to investigate insertion, substitution, and deletion mutations in HBB collected from HbVar and their effects using the in-silico approach. In this comparative analysis, three sequences, one wild-type and two mutated HBB sequences were studied in the South American region. It was determined that the Brazilian nd-HPFH mutated sequence presents the formation of a beta chain in the protein structure, not being able to align or overlap in the wild-type, which results in the alteration of the function of the protein, and therefore the development of Thalassemia disease.

Exposure to disinfection by-products（DBP） such as trihalomethanes（THM） in swimming pools has been linked to adverse health effects in humans, but their biological mechanisms are unclear. We evaluated short-term changes in blood gene expression of adult recreational swimmers after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Volunteers swam 40 min in an indoor chlorinated pool. Blood samples were drawn and four THM（chloroform,bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform） were measured in exhaled breath before and after swimming. Intensity of physical activity was measured as metabolic equivalents（METs）. Gene expression in whole blood m rNA was evaluated using Illumina Human HT-12v3 Expression-Bead Chip. Linear mixed models were used to evaluate the relationship between gene expression changes and THM exposure. Thirty-seven before-after pairs were analyzed. The median increase from baseline to after swimming were： 0.7 to 2.3 for MET, and 1.4 to 7.1 μg/m^3 for exhaled total THM（sum of the four THM）.Exhaled THM increased on average 0.94 μg/m^3 per 1 MET. While 1643 probes were differentially expressed post-exposure. Of them, 189 were also associated with exhaled levels of individual/total THM or MET after False Discovery rate. The observed associations with the exhaled THM were low to moderate（Log-fold change range：-0.17 to 0.15）. In conclusion, we identified short-term gene expression changes associated with swimming in a pool that were minor in magnitude and their biological meaning was unspecific. The high collinearity between exhaled THM levels and intensity of physical activity precluded mutually adjusted models with both covariates. These exploratory results should be validated in future studies.

BACKGrOUND The implementation of optical diagnosis(OD) of diminutive colorectal lesions in clinical practice has been hampered by differences in performance between community and academic settings. One possible cause is the lack of a standardized learning tool. Since the factors related to better learning are not well described, strong evidence upon which a consistent learning tool could be designed is lacking. We hypothesized that a self-designed learning program may be enough to achieve competency in OD of diminutive lesions of the colon.AIM To assess the accuracy of OD of diminutive lesions in real colonoscopies after application of a self-administered learning program.METHODS This was a single-endoscopist prospective pilot study, in which an experienced endoscopist followed a self-designed, self-administered learning program in OD of colorectal lesions. An assessment phase divided in two halves with a 6-mo period in between without performance of OD was developed in a populationbased colorectal cancer screening program. The accomplishment of the Preservation and Incorporation of Valuable Endoscopic Innovations criteria and performance measures were calculated overall and in the two halves of the assessment phase, assessing their response to the 6-mo stopping period. The evolution of performance through blocks of 50 lesions was also assessed.rESULTS Overall, 152 patients and 522 lesions(≤ 5 mm: 399, and 6-9 mm: 123) were included. The negative predictive value for the OD of adenoma in rectosigmoid lesions diagnosed with high confidence was 91.7% [95% confidence interval(CI):87.3-96.6]. The proportion of agreement on surveillance interval between OD and pathological diagnosis was higher than 95%. Overall accuracy for diminutive lesions diagnosed with high confidence was 89.5%(95%CI: 86.3-92.7). The overall accuracy of OD was similar in the two halves of the assessment phase [90.1(95%CI: 85.6-94.7) vs 88.2(95%CI: 87.9-95.9)]. BACKGrOUND Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide.There is a real need to develop treatment strategies for reducing neurological deficits in stroke survivors,and stem cell(SC)therapeutics appear to be a promising alternative for stroke therapy that can be used in combination with approved thrombolytic or thrombectomy approaches.However,the efficacy of SC therapy depends on the SC homing ability and engraftment into the injury site over a long period of time.Nonetheless,tracking SCs from their niche to the target tissues is a complex process.AIM To evaluate SC migration homing,tracking and therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of stroke using nanoparticles METHODS A systematic literature search was performed to identify articles published prior to November 2019 that were indexed in PubMed and Scopus.The following inclusion criteria were used:(1)Studies that used in vivo models of stroke or ischemic brain lesions;(2)Studies of SCs labeled with some type of contrast agent for cell migration detection;and(3)Studies that involved in vivo cellular homing and tracking analysis.rESULTS A total of 82 articles were identified by indexing in Scopus and Pub Med.Afterthe inclusion criteria were applied,35 studies were selected,and the articles were assessed for eligibility;ultimately,only 25 studies were included.Most of the selected studies used SCs from human and mouse bone marrow labeled with magnetic nanoparticles alone or combined with fluorophore dyes.These cells were administered in the stroke model(to treat middle cerebral artery occlusion in 74%of studies and for photothrombotic induction in 26%of studies).Fiftythree percent of studies used xenogeneic grafts for cell therapy,and the migration homing and tracking evaluation was performed by magnetic resonance imaging as well as other techniques,such as near-infrared fluorescence imaging(12%)or bioluminescence assays(12%).CONCLUSION Our systematic review provided an up-to-date evaluation of SC migration homing and the efficacy of cellular therapy for str

Sessile serrated adenoma/polyps(known as SSA/Ps) may play an important role in the development of interval colorectal cancer(CrC). These lesions are more difficult to detect with conventional endoscopy and they may quickly turn into CrC, especially when dysplasia has developed. Therefore, primary or secondary chemoprevention may be an appealing strategy at a population level. Calcium and vitamin D have been shown in epidemiological studies to reduce the risk of CrC and conventional adenomas, but the evidence regarding their effect on SSA/Ps is controversial. In this editorial we comment on the results of a recent randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of calcium and vitamin D on the development of serrated lesions, summarizing the possible antineoplastic mechanisms of calcium and vitamin D, and discussing the differences found with previous observational reports.
