A series of true triaxial compression tests and indirect tension tests with axial confinements are performed to assess the effects of the intermediate principal stresses on the elasticity and strengths of Phu Phan sandstone,Phu Kradung sandstone and Phra Wihan sandstone.These sandstones are commonly found in the north and northeast of Thailand.Their mechanical properties and responses play a significant role on the stability of the tunnels,slope embankments and dam foundations in the region. Over 50 rectangular shaped specimens（50xS0x100 mm） are tested using a polyaxial load frame.The frame is developed using a concept if cantilever beam system to apply truly constant lateral stresses（σ andσ）,onto the specimen.The lateral stresses are applied with different magnitudes between two mutually perpendicular directions and varying from 0 up to 20 MPa.The axial stress（σ-along the longest axis） is increased until failure occurs.Comparisons of the results with those obtained from the uniaxial and triaxial strength test methods indicate that under the same mean stress,σ,σ can notably decrease the octahedral shear stress,τ,at failure.The failure envelope is lower for the greaterσ_/σ ratio.The results also indicate that the sandstones are transversely anisotropic.For all tested sandstones the elastic modulus in the direction normal to the bedding planes is about 3- 4 times smaller than that parallel to the bedding planes.The Poisson's ratio on the plane parallel to the beds is about half of that across the beds. The effect ofσ on the tensile strengths is assessed by conducting the Brazilian（indirect） tension test with application of constant axial confinement.This constant axial stress will become the intermediate principal stressσ.Their magnitudes are varied from 0 to 40 MPa and are applied along the axial direction of 50 mm-diameter disk samples using the polyaxial load frame.Then the line load is diametrically applied until failure occurs.The intermediate principal stress（σ-axial stress in this case） can linearly decrease
