We study the complexity of the supergranular network through fractal dimension by using the Ca II K digitized data archive obtained from the Kodaikanal Solar *** data consist of 326 visually selected supergranular cells spread across the 23rd solar *** cells that were well-defined were chosen for the analysis and we discuss the potential selection effect thereof,mainly that it favors cells of a smaller size(ractal dimension of supergranules across the solar cycle and find that it is anticorrelated with the activity level.

Using Markov chains to predict the natural progression of diabetic retinopathy

AIM: To study the natural progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 ***: This was an observational study of 153 cases with type 2 diabetes from 2010 to 2013. The state of patient was noted at end of each year and transition matrices were developed to model movement between years. Patients who progressed to severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDr) were *** Chains and Chi-square test were used for statistical ***: We modelled the transition of 153 patients from NPDr to blindness on an annual basis. At the end of year 3, we compared results from the Markov model versus actual data. The results from Chi-square test confirmed that there was statistically no significant difference(P =0.70) which provided assurance that the model was robust to estimate mean sojourn times. The key finding was that a patient entering the system in mild NPDr state is expected to stay in that state for 5y followed by 1.07 y in moderate NPDr, be in the severe NPDr state for 1.33 y before moving into PDr for roughly8 y. It is therefore expected that such a patient entering the model in a state of mild NPDr will enter blindness after 15.29 ***: Patients stay for long time periods in mild NPDr before transitioning into moderate ***, they move rapidly from moderate NPDr to proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDr) and stay in that state for long periods before transitioning into blindness.

Purpose Load frequency control(LFC)in today’s modern power system is getting complex,due to intermittency in the output power of renewable energy sources along with substantial changes in the system parameters and *** address this problem,this paper proposes an adaptive fractional order(FO)-fuzzy-PID controller for LFC of a renewable penetrated power ***/methodology/approach To examine the performance of the proposed adaptive FO-fuzzy-PID controller,four different types of controllers that includes optimal proportional-integral-derivative(PID)controller,optimal fractional order(FO)-PID controller,optimal fuzzy PID controller,optimal FO-fuzzy PID controller are compared with the proposed *** dynamic response of the system relies upon the parameters of these controllers,which are optimized by using teaching-learning based optimization(TLBO)*** simulations are carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK *** The simulation outcomes reveal the supremacy of the proposed approach in dynamic performance improvement(in terms of settling time,overshoot and error reduction)over other controllers in the literature under different ***/value In this paper,an adaptive FO-fuzzy-PID controller is proposed for LFC of a renewable penetrated power *** main contribution of this work is,a maiden application has been made to tune all the possible parameters of fuzzy controller and FO-PID controller simultaneously to handle the uncertainties caused by renewable sources,load and parametric variations.

The dielectric barrier discharge-based non-thermal plasma technique is one of the most prominent techniques which give peerless results in controlling the concentration of NO_(X).However,when it comes to the automobile diesel engine,availability of high-voltage pulse power supply is the major *** this study,battery-powered high-voltage pulse power supply for NO_(X) treatment has been *** types of electrodes:rod type and rod with helical spring type are studied for the treatment of *** plasma-adsorbent technique has also been used to enhance NO_(X) removal *** have been conducted with two different gas flow rates,i.e.4 l and 6 l/min at laboratory level and have got significant results toward removal of NO_(X).When the exhaust has been treated with plasma alone,the reactor with rod-type electrode has shown 85%NO_(X) removal efficiency at a specific energy(SE)of 283 J/l with a flow rate of 4 l/*** the plasma reactor is cascaded with the adsorbent reactor,both adsorbents:13x molecular sieve(MS13x)and activated alumina are able to remove 100%of NO_(X) with the proposed power supply at a lesser SE.

In renewable penetrated power systems, frequency instability arises due to the volatile nature of renewable energy sources (rES) and load disturbances. The traditional load frequency control (LFC) strategy from conventional power sources (CPS) alone unable to control the frequency deviations caused by the aforementioned disturbances. Therefore, it is essential to modify the structure of LFC, to handle the disturbances caused by the rES and load. With regards to the above problem, this work proposes a novel coordinated LFC strategy with modified control signal to have Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) for frequency stability enhancement of the Japanese power system. Where, the coordinated control strategy is based on the PID controller, which is optimally tuned by the recently developed JAYA Algorithm (JA). Numerous simulations are performed with the proposed methodology and, the results have confirmed the effectiveness of a proposed approach over some recent and well-known techniques in literature. Furthermore, simulation results reveal that the proposed coordinated approach significantly minimizing the frequency deviations compared to the JAYA optimized LFC without PHEVs & with PHEVs but no coordination.
