Investigating the use of an ionic liquid for rare earth mineral flotation

Common collectors for rare earth mineral(rEM) flotation,which include carboxylates and hydroxamates,face problems such as being non-selective and sensitive to impurity ions.A type of ionic liquid(IL),tetraethylammonium mono-(2-ethylhexyl)2-ethylhexyl phosphonate([N_(2222)][EHEHP]),has been investigated previously for rare earth elements(rEE) solvent extraction,and was proven to be selective and effective.In this work,[N_(2222)][EHEHP] was evaluated as a collector in bastnasite(a primary rEM source for rEE production) flotation for the first time.The results were compared with quartz and hematite,two common gangue minerals in rEM deposits.Zeta potential measurements and Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy(FT-Ir) were completed to investigate the surface chemical properties involved in the flotation of these minerals using this collector.The findings were compared with microflotation results.FT-Ir and zeta potential measurements suggest adsorption of the collector’s phosphonate group onto bastnäsite and hematite,likely through chemisorption;whereas for quartz,the minimum micro flotation recovery is likely due to no adsorption of IL on its surface.Micro flotation re sults show higher collectability of [N_(2222)] [EHEHP] for hematite than bastnasite,the latter only shows appreciable recovery at pH 5 with elevated dosage of IL(500 g/t).To achieve better separation,a two-stage flotation scheme was designed and evaluated by bench scale flotation on a synthetic mineral mixture.The concentrates and tails were analyzed by magnetic separation,and it is found that bastnasite recovery over 90% with maximum upgrade ratio 1.7 can be achieved with elevated collector dosage.

Exploring the effects of coronary artery disease as a preexisting comorbidity on mortality in hospitalized septic patients:a retrospective observation study

Background:Sepsis has high prevalence and mortality rate,and it is imperative to identify populations at risk of poor sepsis outcomes.Septic patients with preexisting chronic comorbidities are shown to have worse sepsis outcomes.By identifying comorbidities with greater influence on sepsis progression,we can direct limited resources to septic patients with comorbidities and reduce health care costs.Chronic comorbidities can impact the risk of developing sepsis and having worse outcomes.Coronary artery disease(CAD)is a common comorbidity,especially in the elderly,and a leading cause of death globally.We wished to investigate the influence of CAD as a comorbidity on sepsis and hypothesized that preexisting CAD would increase mortality in hospitalized septic patients.Methods:We conducted retrospective observational study using patient data from Freeman Health System in Joplin,MO.We analyzed patient records from Freeman Health System database from January 1,2019,to June 30,2020.Septic patients were identified using the International Classification of Diseases,Tenth revision sepsis codes.To identify septic patients with preexisting CAD,we used International Classification of Diseases,Tenth revision codes for CAD.We compared mortality rates for septic patients with and without CAD.results:Two-sample proportion test was conducted to test the difference in mortality between septic patients with and without preexisting CAD.The difference in mortality for the total population was−0.016(P=0.553).In the male and female subgroups,the differences in mortality were 0.0122(P=0.739)and−0.0511(P=0.208),respectively.The differences in mortality in patients aged 40 to 64 years and 65 years and older were−0.0077(P=0.870)and 0.0007(P=0.983),respectively.The statistical tests failed to find significant differences when comparing septic patients with and without preexisting CAD.There was no significant difference in the age and sex subgroups.Conclusion:Our study showed that CAD alone was not associated with higher mortality due to sepsi

A Comparative Study between Landmark Based and real Time Ultrasound Guided Sub Arachnoid Block

Background: Sub arachnoid block (SAB) performed by traditional landmark palpation technique can be inaccurate. This problem is exacerbated by altered patient anatomy due to obesity and age-related changes. A pre-procedural ultrasound scan of the lumbar spine has been shown to be of benefit in guiding lumbar epidural insertion in obstetric patients. Information on the use of real-time ultrasound (rUS) guided SAB, to date, been limited. This study compared rUS guided SAB to traditional landmark guided technique in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia for different surgical procedures. Methods: This was a prospective, single center, comparative observational study conducted in the department of anesthesiology at our center. 560 patients who underwent spinal anesthesia either by landmark based technique or real-time ultrasound-guided methods. The primary outcome was the first attempt success rate of dural puncture when employing the two methods. results: Baseline characteristics were similar in the two study groups. The first attempt success rate of dural puncture in landmark guided group was 64.3% compared to 72.6% in the ultrasound guided group. This difference was not statistically significant. The procedure performance time was significantly shorter with landmark palpation compared to use of real-time ultrasound guided method. Conclusion: Use of rUS-guided technique does not significantly improve the first attempt success rate of SAB dural puncture during spinal anesthesia compared to the traditional landmark-guided technique.

Comparison of efficacy of lung ultrasound and chest X-ray in diagnosing pulmonary edema and pleural effusion in ICU patients: A single centre, prospective, observational study

Background and Aims While chest X-ray (CXr) has been a conventional tool in intensive care units (ICUs) to identify lung pathologies, computed tomography (CT) scan remains the gold standard. Use of lung ultrasound (LUS) in resource-rich ICUs is still under investigation. The present study compares the utility of LUS to that of CXr in identifying pulmonary edema and pleural effusion in ICU patients. In addition, consolidation and pneumothorax were analyzed as secondary outcome measures. Material and Methods This is a prospective, single centric, observational study. Patients admitted in ICU were examined for lung pathologies, using LUS by a trained intensivist;and CXr done within 4 hours of each other. The final diagnosis was ascertained by an independent senior radiologist, based on the complete medical chart including clinical findings and the results of thoracic CT, if available. The results were compared and analyzed. results Sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of LUS was 95%, 94.4%, 94.67% for pleural effusion;and 98.33%, 97.78%, 98.00% for pulmonary edema respectively. Corresponding values with CXr were 48.33%, 76.67%, 65.33% for pleural effusion;and 36.67%, 82.22% and 64.00% for pulmonary edema respectively. Sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of LUS was 91.30%, 96.85%, 96.00% for consolidation;and 100.00%, 79.02%, 80.00% for pneumothorax respectively. Corresponding values with CXr were 60.87%, 81.10%, 78.00% for consolidation;and 71.3%, 97.20%, 96.00% for pneumothorax respectively. Conclusion LUS has better diagnostic accuracy in diagnosis of pleural effusion and pulmonary edema when compared with CXr and is thus recommended as an effective alternative for diagnosis of these conditions in acute care settings. Our study recommends that a thoracic CT scan can be avoided in most of such cases.

应用rAPD分子指纹技术,从240个随机引物中筛选了10个引物,对来自澳州8个棉花种植区的99个大丽轮枝菌株进行了DNA随机扩增。结果表明:10个随机引物共扩增出92条rAPD谱带,其中55.4%为多态带。根据每一个引物扩增的rAPD图谱,供试菌株可划分为3到8个不同的rAPD组。使用计算机PHYLP3.5版本分析程序,将全部扩增带进行类聚分析,所有菌株分为15个rAPD遗传组。这些rAPD遗传组与菌株的地理分布有显著的相关性。

Objective:The ArCaP cell line was established from the ascites fluid of a patient with metastatic prostate cancer.This study character- ized the host microenvironmental role in cancer progression,epithelial to mesenchymal transition( EMT),and bone and adrenal metas- tasis in parental ArCaP and its derived cell subelones.Methods:Cytogenetic profiles,growth,migration,invasion,cellular interac- tion,drug sensitivities,and gene expression of ArCaP cell subclones were compared.In vivo gene expression,behavior,and metasta- sis of ArCaP subelones were analyzed by serial intracardiac injections into SCID mice.results:ArCaPE cells,with cobblestone morphology,underwent EMT through cellular interaction with host bone and adrenal gland.Lineage - derived ArCaPM cells,with spindle - shape fibroblastic morphology,exhibited decreased cell adhesion and increased metastasis to bone and adrenal gland.Cytoge- netic analyses of parental and ArCaP subelones confirmed their clonality.Conclusion :ArCaP uniquely models the molecular hasis of prostate cancer bone and adrenal metastases and epithelial to mesenchymal transition.
