Prediction of rock fragmentation in a fiery seam of an open-pit coal mine in India

Spontaneous combustion of coal increases the temperature in adjoining overburden strata of coal seams and poses a challenge when loading blastholes. This condition, known as hot-hole blasting, is dangerous due to the increased possibility of premature explosions in loaded blastholes. Thus, it is crucial to load the blastholes with an appropriate amount of explosives within a short period to avoid premature detonation caused by high temperatures of blastholes. Additionally, it will help achieve the desired fragment size. This study tried to ascertain the most influencial variables of mean fragment size and their optimum values adopted for blasting in a fiery seam. Data on blast design, rock mass, and fragmentation of 100 blasts in fiery seams of a coal mine were collected and used to develop mean fragmentation prediction models using soft computational techniques. The coefficient of determination (r2), root mean square error (rMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE), variance account for (VAF) and coefficient of efficiency in percentage (CE) were calculated to validate the results. It indicates that the random forest algorithm (rFA) outperforms the artificial neural network (ANN), response surface method (rSM), and decision tree (DT). The values of r2, rMSE, MAE, MSE, VAF, and CE for rFA are 0.94, 0.034, 0.027, 0.001, 93.58, and 93.01, respectively. Multiple parametric sensitivity analyses (MPSAs) of the input variables showed that the Schmidt hammer rebound number and spacing-to-burden ratio are the most influencial variables for the blast fragment size. The analysis was finally used to define the best blast design variables to achieve optimum fragment size from blasting. The optimum factor values for rFA of S/B, ld/B and ls/ld are 1.03, 1.85 and 0.7, respectively. © 2024 Institute of rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

A biosynthetic gene cluster for the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoids variecolin(1)and variecolactone(2)was identified in Aspergillus aculeatus ATCC *** production of 1 and 2 was achieved in Aspergillus oryzae by expressing the sesterterpene synthase VrcA and the cytochrome P450 ***,the replacement of VrcB with homologous P450s from other fungal terpenoid pathways yielded three new variecolin analogues(5-7).Analysis of the compounds’anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo revealed that although 5 and 1 had comparable activities,5 was associated with significantly reduced toxic side effects in cancer-bearing mice,indicating its potentially broader therapeutic *** study describes the first tests of variecolin and its analogues in animals and demonstrates the utility of synthetic biology for creating molecules with improved biological activities.

Dielectric and rotational viscosity measurements of a multi-component ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture were performed by adding a small concentration （0.01 wt%） of silica and multi walled carbon nanotubes （MWCNTs）. Liquid crystals turn out to be outstanding hosts for nanomaterials. A remarkable increase in the rotational viscosity was noticed in CNT doped system as compared to silica doped same liquid crystal system. Comparison of dielectric studies shows higher value of permittivity and dielectric losses for silica-doped sample than those of CNT doped sample. The results have been interpreted both experimentally and theoretically.

Frequency and scale of the blasting events are increasing to boost limestone production. Mines areapproaching close to inhabited areas due to growing population and limited availability of land resourceswhich has challenged the management to go for safe blasts with special reference to opencast *** study aims to predict the distance covered by the flyrock induced by blasting using artificial neuralnetwork （ANN） and multi-variate regression analysis （MVrA） for better assessment. Blast design andgeotechnical parameters, such as linear charge concentration, burden, stemming length, specific charge,unconfined compressive strength （UCS）, and rock quality designation （rQD）, have been selected as inputparameters and flyrock distance used as output parameter. ANN has been trained using 95 datasets ofexperimental blasts conducted in 4 opencast limestone mines in India. Thirty datasets have been used fortesting and validation of trained neural network. Flyrock distances have been predicted by ANN, MVrA,as well as further calculated using motion analysis of flyrock projectiles and compared with the observeddata. OBJECTIVE To examine the trends in patient characteristics and clinical outcomes over a ten-year period and to analyse the predictors of mortality in octogenarians undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI)in our *** A total of 782 consecutive octogenarians(aged 80 and above)were identified from a prospectively collected PCI database within our non-surgical,medium volume centre between 1st January 2007 and 31st December *** represented 10.9%of all PCI procedures performed in our centre during this *** evaluated the demographic and procedural character-istics of the cohort with respect to clinical outcomes(all-cause in-hospital and 1-year mortality,in-hospital complication rates,duration of hospital admission,coronary disease angiographic complexity and major co-morbidities).The cohort was further stratified into three chronological tertiles(January 2007 to July 2012,261 cases;August 2012 to May 2015,261 cases;June 2015 to December 2016,260 cases)to assess for differences over *** of mortality were identified through a multivariate re-gression *** The number of octogenarians undergoing PCI increased nearly ten-fold over the studied *** this,there were no significant differences in clinical outcomes or patient characteristics,except for the increased use of trans-radial vascular access[11.9%in first tertile vs.73.2%in third tertile(Pr mortality(12.4%vs.12.5%vs.14.4%,P=0.746)remained constant in all three tertiles *** independent predict-ors of mortality were identified-increasing age[Hr=1.12(1.03−1.22),P=0.008],cardiogenic shock[Hr=16.40(4.04-66.65),Pre left ventricular impairment[Hr=3.52(1.69−7.33),P=0.001],peripheral vascular disease[Hr=2.73(1.22−6.13),P=0.015],diabetes[Hr=2.59(1.30−5.17),P=0.007]and low creatinine clearance[Hr=0.98(0.96−1.00),P=0.031].CONCLUSION This contemporary observational study pro
