Spastin and alsin protein interactome analyses begin to reveal key canonical pathways and suggest novel druggable targets

Developing effective and long-term treatment strategies for rare and complex neurodegenerative diseases is challenging. One of the major roadblocks is the extensive heterogeneity among patients. This hinders understanding the underlying disease-causing mechanisms and building solutions that have implications for a broad spectrum of patients. One potential solution is to develop personalized medicine approaches based on strategies that target the most prevalent cellular events that are perturbed in patients. Especially in patients with a known genetic mutation, it may be possible to understand how these mutations contribute to problems that lead to neurodegeneration. Protein–protein interaction analyses offer great advantages for revealing how proteins interact, which cellular events are primarily involved in these interactions, and how they become affected when key genes are mutated in patients. This line of investigation also suggests novel druggable targets for patients with different mutations. here, we focus on alsin and spastin, two proteins that are identified as “causative” for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and hereditary spastic paraplegia, respectively, when mutated. Our review analyzes the protein interactome for alsin and spastin, the canonical pathways that are primarily important for each protein domain, as well as compounds that are either Food and Drug Administration–approved or are in active clinical trials concerning the affected cellular pathways. This line of research begins to pave the way for personalized medicine approaches that are desperately needed for rare neurodegenerative diseases that are complex and heterogeneous.

The effects of acyclic liquid nitrogen(LN)treatment in a temperature range of-196℃to 50℃on the thermal and magnetic stability of Fe78Si9B13 and Fe73.5Si13.5B9Nb3Cu1 glassy ribbons have been *** intrinsic heterogeneities of the metallic glasses can be activated through cryogenic thermal cycling,making irreversible structural changes after the treatment and inducing rejuvenation to the *** microstructural changes of both Fe-based metallic glass(MG)and nanocrystalline alloy induced by LN treatment were *** experimental results show that the LN treatment could effectively rejuvenate the Fe-Si-B MGs and change their thermomechanical and magnetic *** on the partially-crystallinity and well-known magnetic constants,the increase of the energy at the order of 10m J/g and magnetic domain wall movement and rotation at the order of 5-6μm and 0.5°-0.8°are found for FINEMET-type amorphous alloy after LN *** is also found that LN treatment can contribute a little stored energy to the magnetic domain wall movement and magnetic domain rotation.

Electron tomography for sintered ceramic materials by a neural network algebraic reconstruction technique

The missing wedge effect in electron tomography introduces various types of artifacts in the tomograms and lowers the reconstruction resolution and *** artifacts produced in tomographic reconstruction of bulk materials can be very severe,particularly for sintered bulk ceramic materials in which there are often nano-pores or pore-like microstructure ***,we report a neural network algebraic reconstruction algorithm with no prior knowledge to perform electron tomography for a sintered SiC material with nano carbon *** results show that the proposed algorithm has a great suppressive effect on the missing wedge artifacts and a high tolerance for *** information in the missing wedge can be partly recovered by this ***,both the shape of the bulk SiC specimen and its irregular inner pore-like features are correctly retrieved in the obtained 3D *** study shows the effectiveness of the neural network algorithm for improving the reconstruction accuracy of electron tomography,in order to reveal sophisticated 3D microstructures generally existing in sintered ceramic materials.

Ta / NiFe/Bi （ Ag, Cu ）/FeMn/Ta and Ta / NiFe1/FeMn / Bi （ Ag, Cu ）/NiFen/Ta films were prepared by magnetic sputtering. The texture and the dependences of the exchange-coupling field on the thickness of Bi, Ag, and Cu in Ta/NiFe/Bi（Ag, Cu） /FeMn/Ta and Ta/NiFe/FeMn/Bi（Ag, Cu）/NiFe/Ta films were studied. XPS results indicate that the Bi atoms migrated into the FeMn layer during the deposition process and a FeMnBi alloy was probably formed or the Bi atoms existed as an impurity in the FeMn layer in Ta/NiFe/Bi（Ag, Cu ）/FeMn/Ta. Otherwise, in Ta/NiFe/FeMn/Bi （Ag, Cu）/NiFe/Ta films, Bi, Ag, and Cu atoms do not remain entirely at the interface of the FeMn/ NiFeⅡfilm, but at least partly segregate to the surface of the NiFe film.

Luminescence investigation of Dy2O2S and Dy2O2SO4 obtained by thermal decomposition of sulfate hydrate

The yellow emitting dysprosium oxysulfide （Dy2O2S） and dysprosium oxysulfate （Dy202SO4） compounds were prepared from the thermal decomposition of hydrated dysprosium sulphate. The materials were characterized by using thermogravimetry （TG/DTG）, X-ray powder diffraction （XrD）, Fourier transform infrared （FTIr） and raman spectroscopies. The thermal stability temperatures at around 1151 and 1313 K were determined for the Dy202S and Dy202SO4 materials, respectively. The photolumines- cence properties of the dysprosium oxysulfide were investigated, showing narrow emission bands assigned to the 4F9/2----＊6hJ intracon- figurational transitions of the Dy3＋ ion. The yellow emission color of this phosphor suggests that the Dy202S is a promising material for applications in LEDs.

Polyaniline films were successfully synthesized on zinc-electroplated steel sheets in sodium salicylate (1mol·dm-3) aqueous medium. This one-step aniline electropolymerization process has been studied in this paper using different electrochemical techniques. And scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the polymer coatings rapidly formed by either galvanostatic or potentiostatic mode performed compact and uniform in morphology. Potentiodynamic polarization was used to test the anticorrosion properties of this polymer.

Engineering properties of the Bukit Timah Granitic residual soil in Singapore

Extensive site investigations were conducted prior to the construction of a Mass rapid Transit project in Singapore that was predominantly in the Bukit Timah Granite(BTG)formation residual *** paper evaluates the engineering properties of the BTG formation residual soil based on data from 208 site investigation boreholes from four different *** on the results from 2481 conventional laboratory tests and 1192 in-situ tests,this paper summarizes the engineering properties of the highly variable BTG residual soil,including conventional composition analysis,index and hydraulic properties,and strength and deformation parameters required for geotechnical analysis and *** on these results,the BTG formation is found to be quite *** the degree of weathering decreases with depth from the top of the formation,the BTG residual soil becomes sandier,with reduced silt and clay *** coefficient of permeability and the compression index of the BTG residual soil vary *** addition,the empirical equations relating the shear strength(index)to the standard penetration test(SPT)-N,as well as the equations and charts for determining stiffness,are *** findings,together with the proposed equations or charts,can be used for design guidance of similar projects related to granitic residual soils in Singapore.

Prediction of spatial soil loss impacted by long-term land-use/land-cover change in a tropical watershed

The devastating effect of soil erosion is one of the major sources of land degradation that affects human lives in many ways which occur mainly due to deforestation, poor agricultural practices, overgrazing,wildfire and urbanization. Soil erosion often leads to soil truncation, loss of fertility, slope instability, *** causes irreversible effects on the poorly renewable soil resource. In view of this, a study was conducted in Kelantan river basin to predict soil loss as influenced by long-term land use/land-cover(LULC) changes in the area. The study was conducted with the aim of predicting and assessing soil erosion as it is influenced by long-term LULC changes. The 13,100 km^2 watershed was delineated into four sub-catchments Galas, Pergau, Lebir and Nenggiri for precise result estimation and ease of execution. GIS-based Universal Soil Loss Equation(USLE) model was used to predict soil loss in this study. The model inputs used for the temporal and spatial calculation of soil erosion include rainfall erosivity factor,topographic factor, land cover and management factor as well as erodibility factor. The results showed that 67.54% of soil loss is located under low erosion potential(reversible soil loss) or 0-1 t ha^(-1) yr^(-1) soil loss in Galas, 59.17% in Pergau, 53.32% in Lebir and 56.76% in Nenggiri all under the 2013 LULC *** from the correlation of soil erosion rates with LULC changes indicated that cleared land in all the four catchments and under all LULC conditions(1984-2013) appears to be the dominant with the highest erosion losses. Similarly, grassland and forest were also observed to regulate erosion rates in the area. This is because the vegetation cover provided by these LULC types protects the soil from direct impact of rain drops which invariably reduce soil loss to the barest minimum. Optical and magnetic properties of GaN epilayers implanted with ytterbium

we have studied the optical and magnetic properties of ytterbium implanted GaN epilayer grown on (0001) sapphire by metalorganic chemical vapor by deposition (MOCVD). Samples were implanted at room temperature with Yb ions at dose 4 1015 cm-2 and energy of 150 keV. The implanted samples were annealed at 1000 C in N2 at atmospheric pressure to recover implantation damages. The photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation (PLE), and PL kinetics have been studied with continuous and pulse photo-excitations in 360-1100 nm spectral range at different temperatures. The characteristic Yb3+ ion emission spectra were observed in the spectral range between 970-1050 nm. Theoretical fittings of the experimental PL temperature and PL kinetics data suggest that Yb3+ ions are involved in at least two major luminescence centers. The PLE spectra indicate that excitation of the Yb3+ ion occurs via electron-hole pair generation and complex processes. Magnetization versus magnetic field curves shows an enhancement of magnetic order for Yb-implanted samples in 5 K to 300 K temperature range. The Yb-implanted GaN sample showing weak ferromagnetic behavior was compared with the ferromagnetic in situ doped GaYbN material.

Acute liver failure due to natural killer-like T-cell leukemia/ lymphoma: A case report and review of the Literature

Acute liver failure （ALF） is a medical emergency requiring immediate evaluation for liver transplantation. we describe an unusual case of a patient who presented with ascites, jaundice, and encephalopathy and was found to have ALF due to natural killer （NK）-Iike T cell leukemia/lymphoma. The key immunophenotype was CD2＋, CD3＋, CD7＋, CD56＋. This diagnosis, which was based on findings in the peripheral blood and ascitic fluid, was confirmed with liver biopsy, and was a contraindication to liver transplantation. A review of the literature shows that hematologic malignancies are an uncommon cause of fulminant hepatic failure, and that NK-like T-cell leukemia/lymphoma is a relatively recently recognized entity which is characteristically CD3＋ and CD56＋. This case demonstrates that liver biopsy is essential in diagnosing unusual causes of acute liver failure, and that infiltration of the liver with NK-like T-cell lymphoma/leukemia can cause acute liver failure.
