Experimental Evaluation of Cisco ASA-5510 Intrusion Prevention System against Denial of Service Attacks

This study seeks to identify the determinants of Indian central PSUs’ capital structure. This is important since one does not come across many studies related to the PSUs. Moreover in the post disinvestment phase, the PSUs in India have become more market oriented in terms of raising funds. The gradual reduction in the budgetary resources for the PSUs is also one of the reasons. The PSUs have got to depend more on extra-budgetary resources （EBrs） for their needs. PSUs are also different in several ways than their counterparts in the private sector. For this study a sample of 48 profit making manufacturing PSUs is considered for the time period 200603 to 201003. Multiple regression has been used to find out the factors affecting capital structure. The independent variables have been considered keeping in view Agency Theory, Pecking Order Hypothesis and other established capital structure models. The results suggest that the capital structure （Total Borrowing to Total Assets） of the profit making PSUs is affected by Asset Structure （Net Fixed Assets to Total Assets, NFATA）, Profitability （return on Assets, rOA） and Tax. Unlike suggestion of pecking order hypothesis, growth （defined as growth in total assets） is positively related to leverage. As predicted by theory NFATA and rOA are respectively positively and negatively related to leverage. In contradiction to theory tax and leverage are negatively related. Firms with less effective tax rate have gone for more debt. None of the other variables like non-debt tax shield （NDTS）, Volatility, Size were found to be significant.

Cyber attacks are continuing to hamper working of Internet services despite increase in the use of network security systems such as, firewalls and Intrusion protection systems (IPS). recent Denial of Service (DoS) attack on Independence Day weekend, on July 4th, 2009 launched to debilitate the US and South Korean governments’ websites is indicative of the fact that the security systems may not have been adequately deployed to counteract such attacks. IPS is a vital security device which is commonly used as a front line defense mechanism to defend against such DoS attacks. Before deploying a firewall or an IPS device for network protection, in many deployments, the performance of firewalls is seldom evaluated for their effectiveness. Many times, these IPS’s can become bottleneck to the network performance and they may not be effective in stopping DoS attacks. In this paper, we intend to drive the point that deploying IPS may not always be effective in stopping harmful effects of DoS attacks. It is important to evaluate the capability of IPS before they are deployed to protect a network or a server against DoS attacks. In this paper, we evaluate performance of a commercial grade IPS Cisco ASA-5510 IPS to measure its effectiveness in stopping a DoS attacks namely TCP-SYN, UDP Flood, Ping Flood and ICMP Land Attacks. This IPS comes with features to counteract and provide security against these attacks. Performance of the IPS is measured under these attacks protection and compared with its performance when these protection features were not available (i.e. disabled). It was found that the IPS was unable to provide satisfactory protection despite the availability of the protection features against these flooding attacks. It is important for the network managers to measure the actual capabilities of an IPS system before its deployment to protect critical information infrastructure.

Cyber attacks are continuing to hamper working of Internet services despite increased use of network secu-rity systems such as firewalls and Intrusion protection systems (IPS). recent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on Dec 8th, 2010 by Wikileak supporters on Visa and Master Card websites made headlines on prime news channels all over the world. Another famous DDoS attacks on Independence Day weekend, on July 4th, 2009 were launched to debilitate the US and South Korean governments’ websites. These attacks raised questions about the capabilities of the security systems that were used in the network to counteract such attacks. Firewall and IPS security systems are commonly used today as a front line defense mechanism to defend against DDoS attacks. In many deployments, performances of these security devices are seldom evaluated for their effectiveness. Different security devices perform differently in stopping DDoS attacks. In this paper, we intend to drive the point that it is important to evaluate the capability of Firewall or IPS secu-rity devices before they are deployed to protect a network or a server against DDoS attacks. In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of a security device called Netscreen 5GT (or NS-5GT) from Juniper Networks under Layer-4 flood attacks at different attack loads. This security device NS-5GT comes with a feature called TCP-SYN proxy protection to protect against TCP-SYN based DDoS attacks, and UDP protection feature to protect against UDP flood attacks. By looking at these security features from the equipments data sheet, one might assume the device to protect the network against such DDoS attacks. In this paper, we con-ducted real experiments to measure the performance of this security device NS-5GT under the TCP SYN and UDP flood attacks and test the performance of these protection features. Effect of metal fluorides on chromium ions doped bismuth borate glasses for optical applications

Fluoride based glasses with composition CaF_2-ZnF_2-Bi_2 O_3-B_2 O_3 doped with chromium ions have been investigated using physical, optical, electron paramagnetic resonance(EPr), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIr), and raman studies. The amorphous nature of samples was confirmed from x-ray diffraction spectra. The density is evaluated from the Archimedes principle and the values of optical band gap and Urbach energy values were evaluated from the optical absorption spectra. Thus, molar volume, refractive index, etc., were also evaluated. The observed decrease in density and the optical band gap with CaF2 is explained using the crystalline density of metal fluorides and the ionicity of fluorine ions,respectively. The three peaks near 450 nm, 606 nm, and 720 nm, which are shown in the absorption spectra, are accredited to ~4 A)(2 g) → ~4 T_(1 g), ~4 A_(2 g)→ ~4 T_(2 g), ~4 A_(2 g)→~2 E transitions, respectively. resonance signals at g≈ 4.82 and g≈ 1.99 were observed in EPr spectra which are assigned. FTIr and raman analysis were carried out to examine the impact of metal fluorides on the structure of bismuth borate glasses.

Colorectal cancer(CrC)is a predominant life-threatening cancer,with liver and peritoneal metastases as the primary causes of *** inflammation,a known CrC risk factor,nurtures a local inflammatory environment enriched with tumor cells,endothelial cells,immune cells,cancer-associated fibroblasts,immunosuppressive cells,and secretory growth *** complex interactions of aberrantly expressed cytokines,chemokines,growth factors,and matrix-remodeling enzymes promote CrC pathogenesis and evoke systemic responses that affect disease *** evidence suggests that these cytokines and chemokines play a role in the progression of CrC through immunosuppression and modulation of the tumor microenvironment,which is partly achieved by the recruitment of immunosuppressive *** cells impart features such as cancer stem cell-like properties,drug resistance,invasion,and formation of the premetastatic niche in distant organs,promoting metastasis and aggressive CrC growth.A deeper understanding of the cytokineand chemokine-mediated signaling networks that link tumor progression and metastasis will provide insights into the mechanistic details of disease aggressiveness and facilitate the development of novel therapeutics for ***,we summarized the current knowledge of cytokine-and chemokine-mediated crosstalk in the inflammatory tumor microenvironment,which drives immunosuppression,resistance to therapeutics,and metastasis during CrC *** also outlined the potential of this crosstalk as a novel therapeutic target for *** major cytokine/chemokine pathways involved in cancer immunotherapy are also discussed in this review.

We have projected and verified a bidirectional intra-/inter-radio-access-technology carrier-aggregation method for a next-generation heterogeneous mobile network supported by filter bank multicarrier(FBMC).Successful transmission of intra/inter-band carrier aggregation between five broadband FBMC signals and three bands 4G long-term-evolution-advanced signal over 50 km single-mode fiber plus 10 m free-space is successfully broadcasted by employing an incoherent light-injection scheme in *** uplink,two intra-bands carrier-aggregated wireless local area network Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.11 g signal is carried over the equal *** receiver sensitivity,low error vector magnitude,and clear constellation diagrams show successful delivery of different wireless services for different ***,the proposed hybrid system should become a potential solution for a future mobile front-haul network because of its low latency and high capacity.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is known to compromise availability of Information Systems today. Widely deployed Microsoft’s Windows 2003 & 2008 servers provide some built-in protection against common Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, such as TCP/SYN attack. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of built-in protection capabilities of Windows servers 2003 & 2008 against a special case of TCP/SYN based DDoS attack. Based on our measurements, it was found that the built-in security features which are available by default on Microsoft’s Windows servers were not sufficient in defending against the TCP/SYN attacks even at low intensity attack traffic. Under TCP/SYN attack traffic, the Microsoft 2003 server was found to crash due to processor resource exhaustion, whereas the 2008 server was found to crash due to its memory resource depletion even at low intensity attack traffic.

We recently described a new combinatorial strategy for modular catalyst development, one using self-assembly in the ligand scaffold-generating step to produce libraries of chiral self-assembled ligands. Metal-directed self-assembly of bifunctional subunits around a structural metal (typically zinc) can be used to form a heteroleptic complex in which a second set of ligating groups are suitably disposed to form a heterobimetallic catalyst system[1].
