A six-year descriptive epidemiological study of human coronavirus infections in hospitalized patients in Hong kong

We conducted a six-year epidemiological study on human coronaviruses（HcoVs） circulating in Hong kong, using 8275 nasopharyngeal samples from patients with acute respiratory tract infections. HcoVs were detected in 77（0.93%） of the samples by a pan-HcoV rT-Pcr assay. The most frequently detected HcoV species was HcoV-Oc43（0.58%）, followed by HcoV-229E（0.15%）,HcoV-HkU1（0.13%） and HcoV-NL63（0.07%）. HcoVs were detected throughout the study period（September 2008–August 2014）, with the highest detection rate from September 2010 to August2011（22/1500, 1.47%）. Different seasonal patterns of each HcoV species in Hong kong were ***-Oc43 was predominant in the fall and winter, whereas HcoV-HkU1 showed peak activity in winter, with a few cases occurred in spring and summer. HcoV-229 E mainly occurred in winter and spring, while HcoV-NL63 was predominant in summer and autumn. HcoVs most commonly infect the elderly and young children, with median age of 79.5 years（range, 22 days to 95 years）.Intriguingly, the detection rate of HcoV-Oc43 in the age group of ＆gt; 80 years（26/2380, 1.09%） was significantly higher than that in the age group of 0–10 years（12/2529, 0.47%）（P 〈 0.05）. These data provides new insight into the epidemiology of coronaviruses.

Synthesis of self-assembled nanorod vanadium oxide bundles by sonochemical treatment

Self-assembled nanorod of vanadium oxide bundles were synthesized by treating bulk V2O5 with high intensity sonochemical technique. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction （XrD）, scanning electron microscope （SEM）, transmission electron microscope （TEM） and temperature-programmed reduction （TPr） in H2. catalytic behaviour of the materials over anaerobic n-butane oxidation was studied through temperature-programmed reaction （TPrn）. catalytic evaluation of the sonochemical treated V2O5 products was also studied on microreactor. XrD patterns of all the vanadium samples were perfectly indexed to V2O5. The morphologies of the nanorod vanadium oxides as shown in SEM and TEM depended on the duration of the ultrasound irradiation. Prolonging the ultrasound irradiation duration resulted in materials with uniform, well defined shapes and surface structures and smaller size of nanorod vanadium oxide bundles. H2-TPr profiles showed that larger amount of oxygen species were removed from the nanorod V2O5 compared to the bulk. Furthermore, the nanorod vanadium oxide bundles, which were produced after 90, 120 and 180 min of sonochemical treatment, showed an additional reduction peak at lower temperature （-850 k）, suggesting the presence of some highly active oxygen species. TPrn in n-butane/He over these materials showed that the nanorod V2O5 with highly active oxygen species showed markedly higher activity than the bulk material, which was further proven by catalytic oxidation of n-butane.

Experimental study of path planning problem using EMcOA for a holonomic mobile robot

In this paper,a comparative study of the path planning problem using evolutionary algorithms,in comparison with classical methods such as the A*algorithm,is presented for a holonomic mobile *** configured navigation system,which consists of the integration of sensors sources,map formatting,global and local path planners,and the base controller,aims to enable the robot to follow the shortest smooth path ***-based mapping is used for scoring paths efficiently,allowing the determination of collision-free trajectories from the initial to the target *** work considers the evolutionary algorithms,the mutated cuckoo optimization algorithm(McOA)and the genetic algorithm(GA),as a global planner to find the shortest safe path among others.A non-uniform motion coefficient is introduced for McOA in order to increase the performance of this algorithm.A series of experiments are accomplished and analyzed to confirm the performance of the global planner implemented on a holonomic mobile *** results of the experiments show the capacity of the planner framework with respect to the path planning problem under various obstacle layouts.

Dengue virus(DENV) has emerged as a major virus that is spread by mosquitoes. recently, it has spread to more than a hundred nations but continues to lack specific treatable medication. Many traditional chinese medicinal(TcM) plants are in practice for dengue fever in dengue endemic regions. These traditional medicines persevere with treatments, which modern medicines lack. The study aims to substantiate the anti-dengue potential of some traditional herbs and make them available for further studies to facilitate TcM users. Twelve TcM plants aqueous extracts were evaluated, which are described as cool herbs used for the diseases with high fever. Lead plants were established through detailed in vitro foci forming unit reduction analysis(FFUrA) against all four serotypes and validated through quantitative real-time rT-Pcr(q rT-Pcr). Four plants potentially inhibited the virus in primary phenotypic in vitro evaluation. Two lead plants Dryopteris crassirhizoma(Dc) and Morus alba(MA) were identified with half minimal inhibitory concentration(Ic50) 130 and 221 μg m L^-1, respectively, while the selectivity indices(SI) were 4.21 and 4.62, respectively. Lead plants equally inhibited all four serotypes of DENV. Time-of-addition analysis suggested that, Dc was active at later stages of viral replication, whereas MA was active during the early stages and even showed some prophylactic activity. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(HPLc/MS) analysis revealed presence of flavonoids. Dc and MA are identified as potential anti-dengue plants, active against varied stages of dengue virus replication cycle. These results may serve as the base knowledge for further investigation on their combined treatments or integrative treatment with western medicines, which may improve the overall anti-dengue activity in future.

Framework for atomic-level characterisation of quantum computer arrays by machine learning

Atomic-level qubits in silicon are attractive candidates for large-scale quantum computing;however,their quantum properties and controllability are sensitive to details such as the number of donor atoms comprising a qubit and their precise *** work combines machine learning techniques with million-atom simulations of scanning tunnelling microscopic(STM)images of dopants to formulate a theoretical framework capable of determining the number of dopants at a particular qubit location and their positions with exact lattice site precision.A convolutional neural network(cNN)was trained on 100,000 simulated STM images,acquiring a characterisation fidelity(number and absolute donor positions)of>98% over a set of 17,600 test images including planar and blurring noise commensurate with experimental *** formalism is based on a systematic symmetry analysis and feature-detection processing of the STM images to optimise the computational *** technique is demonstrated for qubits formed by single and pairs of closely spaced donor atoms,with the potential to generalise it for larger donor *** method established here will enable a high-precision post-fabrication characterisation of dopant qubits in silicon,with high-throughput potentially alleviating the requirements on the level of resources required for quantum-based characterisation,which will otherwise be a challenge in the context of large qubit arrays for universal quantum computing.

Low DHEAS levels are associated with depressive symptoms in elderly chinese men： results from a large study

This study investigated the association between depressive symptoms in elderly chinese men and the total testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone （DHEA）, DHEA sulphate （DHEAS）, oestradiol and sex hormone-binding globulin （SHBG） levels, and the free androgen index. cross-sectional data from 1147 community-dwelling elderly men, aged 65 and older, were used. Depressive symptoms were measured using the chinese Geriatric Depression Scale （GDS）. Total testosterone, free testosterone, DHEA, DHEAS, total oestradiol, the free androgen index and SHBG levels were assessed. DHEA was significantly associated with GDS score, and there was a trend towards DHEAS association, but this was not significant （p=-0. 110, P=0.015; p=-0.074, P=0.055）. However, no association was seen between depressive symptoms and total testosterone levels, free testosterone levels, oestradiol levels or SHBG levels. In terms of the presence of clinically relevant depressive symptoms, there were no statistically significant differences between patients in the lowest quartile of sex steroid hormone levels and those in other quartiles of sex steroid hormone levels. Similarly to Western studies, our study shows that DHEA and DHEAS levels are associated with depressive symptoms.

comprehensive characterization of indoor airborne bacterial profile

This is the first detailed characterization of the airborne bacterial profiles in indoor environments. Two restaurants were selected for this study. Fifteen genera of bacteria were isolated from each restaurant and identified by three different bacterial identification systems including MIDI, Biolog and riboprinter. The dominant bacteria of both restaurants were Gram-positive bacteria in which Micrococcus and Bacillus species were the most abundant. Most bacteria identified were representative species of skin and respiratory tract of human, and soil. Although the bacterial levels in these two restaurants were below the limit of the Hong kong Indoor Air Quality Objective （HkIAQO） Level 1 standard （i.e., 〈 500 cfu/m^3）, the majority of these bacteria were opportunistic pathogens. These results suggested that the identity of airborne bacteria should also be included in the IAQ to ensure there is a safety guideline for the public.
