Pr.-mr.A splicing is an essential step in the pr.cess of gene expr.ssion in eukar.otes and consists of the r.moval ofintr.ns and the linking of exons to gener.te matur. mr.As. This is a highly r.gulated mechanism that allows the alter.ative usage of exons, the r.tention ofintr.nic sequences and the gener.tion of exonic sequences of var.able length. Most human genes under.o splicing events, and disr.ptions of this pr.cess have been associated with a var.ety of diseases, including cancer. Hepatocellular.car.inoma (HCC) is a molecular.y heter.geneous type of tumor.that usually develops in a cir.hotic liver. Alter.tions in pr.-mr.A splicing of some genes have been obser.ed in liver.cancer. and although still scar.e, the available data suggest that splicing defects may have a r.le in hepatocar.inogenesis. Her. we br.efly r.view the gener.l mechanisms that r.gulatepr.-mr.A splicing, and discuss some examples that illustr.te how this pr.cess is impair.d in liver.tumor.genesis, and may contr.bute to HCC development. We believe that a mor. thor.ugh examination of pr.-mr.A splicing is still needed to accur.tely dr.w the molecular.por.r.it of liver.cancer. This will sur.ly contr.bute to a better.under.tanding of the disease and to the development of new effective ther.pies.

The addition of Au3. to spher.cal amine-capped CdSe@ZnS nanopar.icles in toluene at r.om temper.tur. and under.dar.ness can lead to ter.ar. CdSe@ZnS/Au nanohybr.ds. We demonstr.te that this happens only when the nanopar.icles possess a r.latively thin ZnS shell, thus showing that thickness plays a key r.le in gold deposition on the CdSe@ZnS nanopar.icle sur.ace. Our.hypothesis is that the amine ligand acts as the r.ductant of Au3＋ ions into Au＋ ions, whose affinity for.sulfur.would keep them at the CdSe@ZnS sur.ace. This inter.ction stabilizes the Au＋ ion, making it less pr.ne to r.duction than a non-coor.inated Au＋ ion. In CdSe@ZnS with a thin shell, Au＋ ions at the sur.ace of, or.most pr.bably within, the ZnS shell cause the tr.nsfer.of Cd2＋ ions into the solution. Subsequently, the cor. Se2- anion, which is a better.r.ductant than the shell S2- r.duces Au＋ ions to Au（0）, and lar.e gold nanopar.icles （AuNPs） ar. quickly deposited on the CdSe@ZnS sur.ace in r.om temper.tur. pr.cess, leading to ter.ar. CdSe@ZnS/Au nanohybr.ds. In solution, these ter.ar. nanohybr.ds pr.gr.ssively tr.nsfor. into quater.ar. CdSe@ZnS/Au2S/Au nanohybr.ds due to the r.action of the shell S2- anion with the r.maining Au＋ at the CdSe@ZnS sur.ace, thus leading to the gr.wth of Au2S nanopar.icles on the CdSe@ZnS sur.ace while Zn concomitantly leaches fr.m the nanohybr.d into the solution. Photoir.adiation of the heter.str.ctur.s with visible light enhances their.emission efficiency. Compar.tively, ir.adiation of the pr.cur.or., i.e., CdSe@ZnS nanopar.icles, causes a dr.stic decr.ase in their.emission accompanied by a blue shift of their.emission maximum. The biosynthesis of pr.stanoids is involved in both physiological and pathological pr.cesses. The expr.ssion of pr.staglandin-endoper.xide synthase 2(PTGS2; also known as COX-2) has been tr.ditionally associated to the onset of sever.l pathologies, fr.m inflammation to car.iovascular. gastr.intestinal and oncologic events. For.this r.ason, the sear.h of selective PTGS2 inhibitor. has been a focus for.ther.peutic inter.entions. In addition to the classic non-ster.idal anti-inflammator. dr.gs, selective and specific PTGS2 inhibitor., ter.ed coxibs, have been gener.ted and widely used. PTGS2 activity is less r.str.ctive in ter.s of substr.te specificity than the homeostatic counter.ar. PTGS1, and it accounts for.the elevated pr.stanoid synthesis that accompanies sever.l pathologies. The main r.gulation of PTGS2 occur. at the tr.nscr.ption level. In addition to this, the stability of the mr.A is finely r.gulated thr.ugh the inter.ction with sever.l cytoplasmic elements, r.nging fr.m specificmicr.r.NAs to pr.teins that contr.l mr.NA degr.dation. Mor.over. the pr.tein has been r.cognized to be the substr.te for.sever.l post-tr.nslational modifications that affect both the enzyme activity and the tar.eting for.degr.dation via pr.teasomal and non-pr.teasomal mechanisms. Among these modifications, phosphor.lation, glycosylation and covalent modifications by r.active lipidic inter.ediates and by fr.e r.dicals associated to the pr.inflammator. condition appear.to be the main changes. Identification of these post-tr.nslational modifications is r.levant to better.under.tand the r.le of PTGS2 in sever.l pathologies and to establish a cor.ect analysis of the potential function of this pr.tein in diseases pr.gr.ss. Finally, these modifications can be used as biomar.er. to establish cor.elations with other.par.meter., including the immunomodulation dependent on molecular.pathological epidemiology deter.inants, which may pr.vide a better.fr.me for.potential ther.peutic inter.entions.

Ear.y disease detection is extr.mely impor.ant in the tr.atment and pr.gnosis of many diseases, especially cancer. Often, pr.teomic finger.r.nts and a patter. r.cognition algor.thm ar. used to classify the pathological condition of a given individual. It has been ar.ued that accur.te classification of the existing data implies an under.ying biological significance. Two finger.r.nt-based classifier., decision tr.e and medoid classification algor.thm, and a biomar.er.based classifier.wer. examined using a published dataset of mass spectr.l peaks fr.m 81 healthy individuals and 78 individuals with benign pr.state hyper.lasia (BPH). For.all thr.e methods, classifier. wer. constr.cted using the or.ginal data and the data after.per.uting the labels of the samples (BPH and healthy). The finger.r.nt-based classifier. pr.duced accur.te r.sults for.the or.ginal data, though the peaks used in a given classifier.depended upon which samples wer. placed in the tr.ining set. Accur.te r.sults wer. also obtained for.the dataset with per.uted labels. In contr.st, only thr.e unique peaks wer. identified as putative biomar.er., pr.ducing a small number.of r.asonably accur.te biomar.er.based classifier.. The dataset with per.uted labels was poor.y classified. Since finger.r.nt-based classifier. accur.tely classified the dataset with per.uted labels, the ar.ument for.biological significance fr.m a finger.r.nt-based classifier.must be questioned.

Four.types of nonther.al plasma r.actor. wer. assayed seeking for.the highest efficiency in obtaining hydr.gen and ethylene. Thr.e differ.nt geometr.es for.AC high voltage dr.ven r.actor., and only a single geometr. for.a DC high voltage pulse dr.ven r.actor.wer. studied. Accor.ing to the fundamental pr.nciples of chemical kinetics and consider.ng an analogy among the r.action r.te and the applied power.to the plasma r.actor. the four.r.actor. ar. modeled following the classical chemical r.actor. design to under.tand if the behavior.of the nonther.al plasma r.actor. can be r.gar.ed as the chemical r.actor. following the flow patter.s of PFr.(Plug Flow r.actor. or.CSTr.(Continuous Stir.ed Tank r.actor.. Dehydr.genation is a common elimination r.action that takes place in nonther.al plasmas.
