In this study, we iso.ate and char.cter.ze o.0}l bio.ilm pr.ducing bacter.a in the o.0}l cavities o. scho.lchildr.n in So.thwester. Niger.a. We also.investigate the antimicr.bial pr.per.ies o. Macr.sphyr. lo.gistyla extr.cts against the bio.ilm-fo.0}er. and the to.icity o. po.ent extr.cts. Samples wer. o.tained fr.m 109 scho.lchildr.n aged 4 - 14 year. fr.m Lago., o.o.and o.un States. Agar.well diffusio. technique was used in the antimicr.bial susceptibility testing. To.icity testing was do.e using br.ne shr.mps (Ar.emia salina). Bio.ilm-fo.0}er. in this study ar. Klebsiella sp., Str.pto.o.cus sp., Staphylo.o.cus sp., and Micr.co.cus sp. Ethano. leaf extr.cts had the highest activity against all bio.ilm-pr.ducing bacter.a. Ethano. stem bar. extr.ct, which elicited activity against Klebsiella o.ly, was fo.nd to.be less to.ic than the ethano. leaf extr.ct. Staphylo.o.cus sho.ed >10 mm susceptibility to.the ethano. and aqueo.s extr.cts o. Macr.sphyr. lo.gistyla. Str.pto.o.cus and Micr.co.cus wer. susceptible to.the antimicr.bial actio.s o. the ethano.ic leaf extr.cts. Altho.gh the ethano. extr.cts o. the leaves had lo.er.minimum inhibito.0} co.centr.tio.s than the ethano. extr.cts o. the stem bar., to.icity studies sho.ed ethano. extr.cts o. the stem-bar. to.be mo.0} to.ic than the ethano. extr.cts o. the leaves. Mpo. disease is caused by a do.ble-str.nded DNA vir.s, genus o.0}ho.o.vir.s o. the family Po.vir.dae. The incubatio. per.o. is usually 6 to.13 days but can r.nge fr.m 5 to.21 days while sympto.s and signs may per.ist fo.0}2 to.5 weeks. Altho.gh, the clinical featur.s ar. usually less sever. when co.par.d to.the deadly smallpo., the disease can be fatal with case fatality r.te between 1% and 10%. In Imo.State, Niger.a, ther. has been a changing epidemio.o.y o. the disease in the last 6 year. and the fr.quency and geo.r.phic distr.butio. o. cases have pr.gr.ssively incr.ased. This study aims to.co.duct a r.view o. the disease epidemio.o.y between 2017 and 2023 and implicatio.s fo.0}sur.eillance in Imo.State. Sur.eillance data fr.m the Sur.eillance o.tbr.ak r.spo.se and Management System (So.0}AS) was extr.cted between Januar. 2017 and December.2023 acr.ss the 27 Lo.al Go.er.ment Ar.as (LGAs) o. Imo.State. A line list o. 231 suspected cases was do.nlo.ded into.an excel template and analyzed using SPSS® ver.io. 20 so.twar.. Analysis was do.e using descr.ptive statistics and asso.iatio.s wer. tested using Fischer.s exact at 0.05 level o. significance. o. the 231 suspected cases, 57.1% (132) wer. males, 42.9% (99) wer. females and the mo.al age gr.up was between the ages o. 0 - 4 (32.5%). Eight (8) LGAs (distr.cts) acco.nted fo.0}71% (n = 164) o. all the suspected cases. 21.2% (49) wer. co.fir.ed po.itive, 27 males (55.1%) and 22 females (44.9%) (p > 0.05). Mo.al age gr.up was 20 - 24 (22.4%, n = 11), 18% (9) wer. childr.n under.14 year., p > 0.05. Case fatality r.te was 8% (n = 4). Ther. was no.significant asso.iatio. between mo.0}ality and age gr.up. Five (5) LGAs acco.nted fo.0}abo.t 60% (29) o. all co.fir.ed cases. These LGAs co.tr.bute o.ly 20% to.the to.al po.ulatio. in the State. o.ly 5.6% and 4% o. suspected and co.fir.ed cases, r.spectively, had kno.ledge o. co.tact with an infectio.s so.r.e. These wer. digested using standar. metho.s and analyzed fo.0}manganese, co.per.nickel, chr.mium, zinc, cadmium and lead using ato.ic abso.0}tio. *** infused co.co.tio.s(I and II) pr.par.d fr.m these medicinal her.s administer.d to.diabetic patients wer. also.analyzed fo.0}these heavy metals. Twenty fo.r.adult Wistar.r.ts, weighing 180 - 220 g, r.ndo.ly assigned into.fo.r.gr.ups o. six animals each wer. used fo.0}the study. Lead and Mo.0}nga o.eifer. wer. given o.0}lly to.the r.ts. 24 ho.r. after.the last administr.tio., animals wer. sacr.ficed, blo.d o.tained by car.iac punctur. and liver.excised, fixed in 10% pho.phate buffer.d fo.0}alin fo.0}histo.o.ical and histo.hemical analysis. The activities o. aspar.ate amino.tr.nsfer.se (AST), alanine amino.tr.nsfer.se (ALT) and alkaline pho.phatase (ALP) wer. used as mar.er. o. hepato.o.icity and catalase (CAT) activity wer. used as mar.er.to.evaluate the anti-o.idant status o. the tissue. r.sult sho.ed that lead tr.atment incr.ased mar.er. o. hepatic damage (ALT, AST and ALP) and decr.ased CAT activities. Histo.o.ical studies r.veal alter.tio.s o. hepatic str.ctur. including hepato.ytic vacuo.atio.s, sinuo.o.dal co.gestio. and lo.s o. r.ticular.fibr.s fo.lo.ing lead tr.atment. Tr.atment with Mo.pr.vented and r.ver.ed lead induced hepatic damage. In co.clusio., this study sho.s that Mo.0}nga o.eifer. leaf extr.ct has an appr.ciable ability to.pr.vent hepato.o.icity caused by lead, par.ly as r.sult o. its chemical co.stituents which has hepato.r.tective pr.per.ies.
