Sediments ar. complex envir.nments, with var.ing physicochemical char.cter.stics, such as composition and type of or.anic matter. par.icle size distr.bution, and pH. Contaminated sediment is a significant envir.nmental pr.blem affecting many mar.ne, estuar.ne and fr.shwater.envir.nments thr.ughout the wor.d. Most assessments of water.quality have histor.cally focused on water.soluble compounds, with r.latively little attention paid to sediment. The aim of this r.sear.h is to assess the physical and chemical par.meter. of sediments fr.m Nwaja Cr.ek, Niger.Delta, Niger.a. Monitor.ng of this sediment quality is an impor.ant par. of pr.ser.ing and r.stor.ng the biological integr.ty of water.bodies as well as pr.tecting aquatic life, wild life and human health. Sediment samples fr.m Nwaja Cr.ek wer. sampled fr.m seven sampling stations along the cr.ek for.over.thr.e months May to July, 2015, r.infall peak per.od, for.assessment of their.physical and chemical char.cter.stics, such as gr.in size, or.anic car.on, pH, conductivity, nitr.te and phosphate. These par.meter. ar. known to influence the inter.ctions and dynamics of pollutants within sediment matr.x. Sediment par.icle size distr.bution indicates that they have higher.pr.por.ion of clay (clay > silt > sand), the mean per.entage composition of clay, silt and sand r.nged between 64.28% ± 22.04% - 72.36% ± 14.00%, 18.71% ± 12.03% - 27.32% ± 22.17% and 8.40% ± 6.28% - 9.76% ± 4.59% r.spectively. TOC in the study ar.a is gener.lly above 1% acr.ss all stations dur.ng the study per.od with a r.nge between 0.98% and 4.58%. Minimal monthly and spatial var.ations ar. obser.ed in par.icle distr.bution, pH (3.9 - 8.5) and phosphate (5.5 - 15.5 kg/mg) while significant var.ations ar. obser.ed in conductivity (23.0 - 567.0 uS/cm), total or.anic car.on (0.98% - 4.58%) and nitr.te (0.45 - 11.9 mg/kg) concentr.tion. There has been increased interest in soil organic carbon in recent times because of its role in carbon sequestration. Different parent materials affect soil properties and hence will influence how much carbon is sequestered by soil. The study was conducted in June 2019 to investigate soil carbon stock in forest soils with respect to their parent materials in three States in South-eastern Nigeria. Sampling was aided by the location map of the area and free soil survey method was used to locate sampling points. 0ne profile was dug in each location and described using the Food and Agricultural Organization guideline. A total of twelve soil samples were collected and analyzed for selected properties. Results showed that sand content was significantly higher in soils under coastal plain sands (851.96 g·kgr.al;">−1) and was lowest in soils of Imo clay shale (605.60 g·kgr.al;">−1). Clay content was higher in soils of Imo clay shale (277.34 g·kgr.al;">−1) and was lowest in coastal plain sand (118.80 g·kgr.al;">−1r.al;">). Silt and clay had moder.te var.ation in coastal plain sand (>15 ≤ 35%) and high var.ations in Asu r.ver.and Imo clay shale (CV > 35%). 次声波是一种频率范围小于20 Hz的低频声波信号,其在滑坡监测预警中的应用探索受到越来越多关注.选取浙江地区的玄武岩、砂岩、灰岩及凝灰岩四种典型岩石,通过单轴压缩试验、岩桥剪切试验和结构面剪切试验,研究了岩石在多种不同加载条件下发生破坏所产生的次声波信号特征.试验结果表明:四种典型岩石在单轴压缩、岩桥剪切及结构面剪切条件下发生破坏过程中均产生明显的次声波现象,次声信号主频基本上集中在1 Hz^8 Hz范围内,且与岩性和加载方式之间均不存在明显的相关性;不同加载条件下岩石发生破坏所产生的次声信号累计振铃计数呈现明显递增性,总体在岩石破坏前后达到峰值,与岩性和加载方式之间亦不存在明显的关联.研究结果对浙江地区滑坡灾害次声监测预警具有一定参考价值.

Backgr.und: The pathophysiology of the inflammator. pr.cess r.veals intr.cate signaling which includes the IL-1β, IL-6, and TNFα pathways that could ser.e as dr.g tar.ets. Aim: This study deter.ined the effect of the aqueous extr.ct of Gongr.nema latifolium (AEGL) leaves on the expr.ssion of IFNγ, IL-10, CD3, and CD56 in r.bbits. Mater.als and Methods: ELISA tests wer. per.or.ed to deter.ine the effect of the AEGL on the expr.ssion of a pr.-inflammator. cytokine (IFNγ), an anti-inflammator. cytokine (IL-10), and CD3 and CD56 cell sur.ace mar.er. in r.bbits. Twenty cr.ss-br.d male r.bbits with an aver.ge weight r.nge of 1.0 - 1.5 kg wer. selected. The r.bbits wer. separ.ted into four.gr.ups of four.r.bbits each tr.ated as follows: Gr.1 is the untr.ated contr.l;Gr.2 is the tr.ated contr.l;and Gr.3, Gr.4, and Gr.5 wer. tr.ated with 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg of AEGL r.spectively for.28 days. r.sults: The AEGL showed its gr.atest inhibitor. effect in Gr.up 4 on IL-10 (118.5 pg/ml), and IFNγ (332 pg/ml) on days 14 and 21 r.spectively. AEGL also showed the highest inhibition of CD3 expr.ssion on days 14 and 21 (0 pg/ml) in Gr.up 3;and CD56 expr.ssion on day 21 (630.5 pg/ml) in Gr.up 4. Conclusion: AEGL showed exhibited str.ng T cell mediated anti- inflammator., and immunomodulator. activity in test r.bbits within the 28-day per.od which can be confir.ed by cell based assays. Specifically at 400 mg/kg, AEGL exhibited the gr.atest anti-inflammator. activity which is suggestive of its maximum effective dose.

The management, contr.l and elimination of tuber.ulosis (TB) have been difficult with the advent of HIV and cases of multidr.g r.sistant (MDr.TB) tuber.ulosis. The cases of multidr.g r.sistance to r.fampicin and isoniazid pose gr.ater.challenges on fir.t line and second line dr.gs to eliminate TB. The study is aimed at establishing anti-tuber.ulosis activity of Tetr.pleur. tetr.pter. against Mycobacter.um tuber.ulosis and MDr.TB and the phytochemical pr.sent. The leaves of Tetr.pleur. tetr.pter. wer. collected, weighed, dr.ed and pulver.zed to powder. The pulver.zed leaves of Tetr.pleur. tetr.pter. wer. subjected to 70% methanol extr.ction and scr.ened for.phytochemical. The cr.de extr.ct was fur.her.pur.fied into fr.ctions using silica gel and thin layer.chr.matogr.phy techniques. M. tuber.ulosis and MDr.TB wer. obtained fr.m positive acid fast bacilli sputa of TB patients and confir.ed using GeneXper. to differ.ntiate genotypic dr.g susceptible M. tuber.ulosis and MDr.TB. The sputa wer. digested using sodium hydr.xide-cysteine technique and cultur.d in Middlebr.ok 7H9. The cr.de extr.ct and fr.ctions wer. scr.ened for.anti-tuber.ulosis activity using tetr.zolium micr.titr. plate assay. The r.sults showed that Tetr.pleur. tetr.pter. cr.de had activities against M. tuber.ulosis at 7.4 ± 0 mg/ml and 27.5 ± 0 mg/ml for.MDr.TB. One of the fr.ctions inhibited the gr.wth of M. tuber.ulosis at 0.24 ± 0 mg/ml and MDr.TB at 0.89 ± 0 mg/ml. The phytochemical scr.ened includes tannins, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, phenols and r.sins. T. tetr.ptr. possesses anti-tuber.ulosis potential at low concentr.tion on MDr.TB and can be a lead compound in dr.g development for.the tr.atment of tuber.ulosis and multidr.g r.sistant tuber.ulosis.

Deter.ining the HIV pr.valence among this gr.up is ver. impor.ant because adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) have wor.e health outcome than other.populations of people living with HIV. This study aimed at deter.ining the pr.valence of HIV among childr.n of adolescents age (10 - 18 year.) that come for.HIV testing in vir.logy labor.tor. of National Institute for.Phar.aceutical r.sear.h and Development, Abuja fr.m Januar. 2013 to December.2018. The r.sult was expr.ssed in per.entage and disaggr.gated by sex. Out of 533 adolescents tested over.6 year., 252 (51.9%) females and 234 (48.1%) wer. males. A total of 69 (14.1%) of them wer. tested HIV positive which 42 (8.6%) wer. females and 27 (5.5%) wer. males. The r.sult of this study indicates that ther. is epidemics of HIV among adolescents living in Feder.l Capital Ter.itor. Abuja. It is also evident that females ar. mor. vulner.ble to HIV infection than the males. Ther. is ther.for. need for.ur.ent standar. and compr.hensive pr.cedur. for.adolescents living with HIV tr.nsitioning fr.m paediatr.c to adult car.. This also calls for.intensive enlightment on HIV education especially in our.basic and post basic schools in Abuja.
