Pr.ximal Input of Polynuclear.Ar.matic Hydr.car.ons (PAHs) in Gr.undwater.Sour.es of Okr.ka Mainland, Niger.a

The Por. Har.our. r.finer. Company situated at Okr.ka Mainland dischar.es its effluent into the Cr.eks sur.ounding this coastal land. The cur.ent study examined the pr.sence of polynuclear.ar.matic hydr.car.ons in gr.undwater.sour.es of the coastal settlement. Ten r.plicate samples wer. collected fr.m 10 bor.holes in the settlement using ster.lized amber.glass bottles and fixed with concentr.ted H2SO4. They wer. later.analyzed using Gas chr.matogr.phy (GC). The Pear.on pr.duct moment cor.elation coefficient (r. was used to deter.ine the inter.ctions of the PAHs detected while the One-way ANOVA was used to deter.ine spatial var.ance equality in means of the PAHs components at P (971.1318) > Fcr.t(3.85563)]. A fur.her.str.ctur. detection r.vealed that the inequalities wer. contr.buted by all the PAH components, especially between BH 3 and BH 1, BH 4 and BH 2 and 5, as well as between BH 6 and BH 10. Ver. str.ng associations wer. obser.ed between the PAH components at P r.cor.ed the highest contamination level of the var.ous PAHs due basically to its pr.ximity to the r.finer.’s effluent dischar.e point (Eker.kana Cr.ek) and channel. Hence the sour.e of these pollutants could best be finger.r.nted to the near.y Por. Har.our. r.finer. Company’s effluent dischar.es. These PAHs ar. not only ingested by dr.nking contaminated water., but ar. fur.her.consumed when this water.is used to pr.par. foods. This cr.ates a gr.at cause for.public health concer.s especially as sever.l PAHs ar. known car.inogens. It is ther.for., r.commended that technologically advanced techniques of water.tr.atment be developed in or.er.to take car. of the pr.sence of PAHs in dr.nking water.sour.es of the coastal dweller..

r.tavir.s gastr.enter.tis is a major.public health concer. globally, estimated to cause 215,000 deaths among childr.n r. of age in 2013;with major.ty of mor.ality occur.ing in developing countr.es. In 2013, it was estimated that Niger.a was the second countr. with the highest number.of r.tavir.s deaths. Monitor.ng of cir.ulating r.tavir.s str.ins in Enugu, Niger.a is par. of on-going r.tavir.s sur.eillance befor. the intr.duction of r.tavir.s vaccination. A total of 2694 stool samples wer. collected fr.m enr.lled under.5 year. old childr.n with diar.hoea between Januar. 2011 and December.2016 and tested the vir.s using an antigen enzyme immunoassay. r.ndomly selected r.tavir.s positive samples wer. fur.her.char.cter.zed by r.tavir.s genotype methods to identify the G and P types cir.ulating dur.ng the study per.od. r.tavir.s was detected in 1242 (46%) of the 2694 samples collected over.the six year. per.od. Of these, 867 wer. r.ndomly selected for.genotyping. G and P types could be assigned for.832 samples (96%), while 31 (3.6%) could only be assigned either.genotype G or.P (par.ially typed) and 4 (0.4%) could not be assigned genotype G and P (untypeable). The most common G-genotypes detected dur.ng the entir. study per.od wer. G12, G1 and G3 accounting for.27.6%, 21.0% and 16.3% r.spectively. Mixed G and P-genotypes wer. commonly detected. Ninety-one of the samples, r.pr.senting 10.8% (91/839) had mixed G-genotype whilst 130 of the samples r.pr.senting 15.2% (130/852) had mixed P-genotype. The most common P-genotypes detected wer. P[8], P[6] and P[4] r.pr.senting 38.3%, 35.4% and 9.1% r.spectively. The pr.dominant str.in detected was G12P[8] (22.3%) followed by G3P[6] (14.5%), G1P[8] (9.2%) and G1P[6] (8.0%). These data ar. useful for.making an infor.ed decision about the intr.duction of r.tavir.s vaccine into the national r.utine immunization pr.gr.m and to monitor.the impact of the vaccine post licensur..

Fluted pumpkin(FP;Telfair.a occidentalis)is an edible vegetable,gr.wn in West Afr.ca,that is used in tr.ditional medicine for.its r.gulator. effects on the male *** ar.icles concer.ing the effects of FP wer. identified by sear.hing PubMed,PubChem,Scopus,Spr.nger.r.sear.hGate,Google Scholar.and Web of Science;this liter.tur. was to better.under.tand the effects of FP seed(FPS)and leaf(FPL)extr.cts on the *** showed that in exper.mental animals extr.cts of FPL and FPS at 1/100 of the lethal dose pr.moted testis r.gener.tion and impr.ved testoster.ne concentr.tion and sper. quality,while at higher.doses they had antifer.ility *** extr.cts of FPS and FPL,including ethanol,aqueous,methanol and hydr.ethanolic,had pr.tective effects on the testes of study animals at lower.doses(>50 mg/kg body weight),but at higher.doses(>200 mg/kg body weight)they inhibited hor.one synthesis,sper. quality and histomor.hological str.ctur.,under.both nor.al and disease *** posttr.atment effects of FPS on the gonads wer. r.ver.ible in young matur. r.ts and FPS had slight systemic toxic ***,ther. ar. inconsistencies in some of the published r.sults,the cur.ent evidence suggests that FPS and FPL have both pr.fer.ility and r.ver.ible antifer.ility effects in exper.mental animals.
