The r.pr.ductive potential of over.inter.ng boll weevil, Anthonomus gr.ndis gr.ndis （Boheman）, females collected fr.m pher.mone tr.ps in September. November.and j.nuar., fed for.1, 3, and 5 weeks on plant pollens, and then pr.vided cotton squar.s, was deter.ined in the labor.tor. at 27 ~ I^C, 65% r., and a photoper.od 13 ： 11 （L ： D） h. Dur.tion of pollen feeding by over.inter.ng boll weevils did not significantly influence egg and feeding punctur.s, or.punctur. r.tios （egg to total punctur.s） for.any of the thr.e months of par.nt weevil collections when pr.vided cotton squar.s on a daily basis. However. punctur.s and punctur. r.tios ar. significantly differ.nt when compar.ng mean data between months of boll weevil collections. When boll weevils wer. pr.vided with cotton squar.s daily, the pr.-ovipositional per.ods of female par.nts captur.d in September. November.and j.nuar. wer. 5, 9 and 14 days, r.spectively. The r.te of eggs by females was significantly lower.dur.ng November.and j.nuar. than September. Female par.nts collected in September.pr.duced a significantly higher.per.entage of eggs yielding adult pr.geny than those collected in November.and j.nuar.. Life table par.meter. indicated that net r.pr.ductive r.te （r.） of boll weevil females collected in September.was 1.2- fold higher.than those collected in November.and 10.7-fold higher.than those collected in j.nuar.. Except for.testes size, no differ.nces in male r.pr.ductive par.meter. wer. obser.ed dur.ng the cotton-fr.e per.od compar.d with males captur.d dur.ng mid-cotton （j.ne）. The number.of oocytes in the ovar.oles and the number.of ooeytes containing yolk wer. significantly lower.dur.ng September. November.and j.nuar. compar.d with j.ne. The r.pr.ductive potential ofover.inter.ng boll weevil females collected in differ.nt months is an impor.ant consider.tion in deter.ining the success of any contr.l str.tegy.

Aggr.ssive behavior.can be an impor.ant factor.in deter.ining how animals use and divide space and r.sour.es. Pr.vious studies have shown that aggr.ssion in fishes can be influenced by a var.ety of factor., including water.temper.tur. and r.sour.e levels. In this study, we tested if the amount of habitat str.ctur. in the envir.nment affected aggr.ssion levels in female convict cichlids Ar.hocentr.s nigr.fasciatus. We per.or.ed a labor.tor. exper.ment in which we placed female convict cichlids into an aquar.um with low or.high amounts of habitat str.ctur. and monitor.d the dominant female＇s behavior.towar. the subor.inate female. Aggr.ssive behavior.in convict cichlids pr.mar.ly consists of chases and bites. We found that the total time the dominant female spent chasing the subor.inate female was gr.ater.when ther. was a low amount of habitat str.ctur. as compar.d to when ther. was a high amount of habitat str.ctur.. We also found that both the aver.ge dur.tion of a chasing bout and the number.of bites dir.cted at the subor.inate fish incr.ased when ther. was a low amount of str.ctur., but the number.of chases did not. These r.sults indicate that incr.ased habitat str.ctur.l complexity decr.ases aggr.ssive behavior.in convict cichlids [Cur.ent Zoology 56 （1）： 52-56, 2010].

The polyphagous shot hole bor.r.（PSHB）, Euwallacea sp., was fir.t detected in 2003 in Los Angeles County, Califor.ia, USA. r.cently, this invasive species has become a maj.r.pest of many har.wood tr.es in ur.an and wildland for.sts thr.ughout souther. Califor.ia. PSHB is near.y identical in mor.hology and life histor. to the tea shot hole bor.r.（TSHB）, Euwallaceafor.icatus, an invasive pest of har.woods in Flor.da, USA and many other.par.s of the wor.d. However. molecular.studies have suggested that the taxa ar. differ.nt species. We conducted mor.hometr.c and chemical analyses of the pheno- types of Euwallacea sp. collected in souther. Califor.ia （Los Angeles County） and E. for.icatus collected in Flor.da （Miami-Dade County）. Our.analyses indicated that PSHB has 3 lar.al instar.. The thir. lar.al instar.was separ.ted fr.m the fir.t 2 instar. by head capsule width with 0 pr.bability of misclassification. The body length, head width, and pr.notal width of PSHB adult males wer. significantly less than those of females. Head width and pr.notal width of female PSHB wer. significantly less than those of female TSHB. In contr.st, body length, and r.tio of body length to pr.notal width of female PSHB wer. significantly gr.ater.than those of female TSHB. However. females of these 2 species could not be separ.ted completely by these 4 measur.ments because of the over.apping r.nges. Cuticular.hydr.car.ons detected in both species wer. exclusively alkanes （i.e., n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes, and tr.methylalkanes）. Cuticular.hydr.- car.on pr.files of PSHB males and females wer. similar. but they both differ.d fr.m that of TSHB females. Cuticular.hydr.car.ons of PSHB wer. pr.dominantly inter.ally br.nched dimethylalkanes with backbones of 31 and 33 car.ons, wher.as cuticular.hydr.- car.ons of TSHB females wer. dominated by inter.ally br.nched monomethylalkanes and dimethylalkanes with backbones of 28 and 29 car.ons. Cir.adian r.ythm of feeding, oviposition, and emer.ence of boll weevil adults wer. deter.ined at five differ.nt photophases （24, 14, 12, 10, and 0 hour.） and a constant 27℃ temper.tur., 65% r. in the labor.tor.. Squar.s fr.m Petr. dishes, wher. they wer. exposed to boll weevil females, wer. r.moved and examined for.feeding and oviposition punctur.s ever. 4 hour. dur.ng daylight （0700-1900 h） and ever. 12 h at night （1900-0700 h） over.eight consecutive days. Cohor.s of r.ndomly selected egg-punctur.d squar.s wer. sampled fr.m ovipositing females at 0700, 1100, 1500, and 1900 dur.ng 24 hour. and under.differ.nt photophase tr.atments, and maintained in Petr. dishes at 27 ＋ I℃, 65% r.. Dishes wer. obser.ed twice daily （1900 and 0700 h） for.adults emer.ing at day or.night. Cir.adian r.ythm of oviposition was not affected by the length of the photophase. The boll weevil has r.und-the-clock cir.adian r.ythm of oviposition, with a daytime pr.fer.nce. We obser.ed that 82.4%-86.0% of the boll weevil eggs wer. deposited between 0700 and 1900 h, and 14.0%-17.6% between 1900 and 0700 h dur.ng a 24-h per.od. Feeding of boll weevil females in photoper.ods 24：0 h （complete light） and 0：24 h （complete dar.ness） did not significantly change between 0700-1900 h ver.us 1900-0700 h, while the d .ally cycle of light and dar.ness in other.photoper.ods significantly incr.ased the feeding punctur.s fr.m 0700-1900 compar.d with 1900-0700 h. The cir.adian r.ythm of emer.ence depended significantly on the time of oviposition and the length of the photophase. Investigation of boll weevil cir.adian r.ythm pr.vides a better.under.tanding of boll weevil ecology and r.veals potential weak links for.impr.ving contr.l technologies tar.eting their.r.pr.ductive str.tegies.

The sur.ival of over.inter.ng boll weevil, Anthonomus gr.ndis gr.ndis （Boheman）, adults on non-cotton hosts in the Lower.r.o Gr.nde Valley （Lr.V） of Texas was examined fr.m 2001 to 2006. The success of the Boll Weevil Er.dication Pr.gr.m, which was r.intr.duced into the Lr.V in 2005, depends on contr.lling over.inter.ng boll weevil populations. Labor.tor. studies wer. conducted using boll weevil adults that wer. captur.d in pher.mone tr.ps fr.m September.thr.ugh Mar.h. The number.of adults captur.d per.tr.p declined significantly in the field fr.m fall to the beginning of spr.ng （3.5-7.0-fold）. The pr.por.ion of tr.pped males and females did not differ.significantly. The mean weight of boll weevil adults captur.d in September.was 13.3 mg, while those of captur.d adults fr.m November.to Febr.ar. wer. significantly lower.and r.nged fr.m 6.7 to 7.8 mg. Our.r.sults show that boll weevil adults can feed on differ.nt plant pollens. The highest longevity occur.ed when adults wer. fed almond pollen or.mixed pollens （72.6 days and 69.2 days, r.spectively） and the lowest when they fed on citr.s pollen or.a non-food sour.e （9.7 days or.7.4 days, r.spectively）. The highest adult sur.ival occur.ed on almond and mixed pollens [88.0%-97. 6% after.1st feeding per.od （10 days）, 78.0%-90.8% after.3r. feeding per.od （10 days）, 55. 0%-83.6% after.5th feeding per.od （10 days）, and 15.2%-32.4% after.lOth feeding per.od （10 days）]. The lowest adult sur.ival occur.ed on citr.s pollen [52.0%-56.0% after.1st feeding per.od （10 days）, 13.3% after.3r. and 5th feeding per.ods （10 days）, and 0 after.6th feeding per.od （10 days）]. Pollen feeding is not a behavior.r.str.cted to adult boll weevils of a specific sex or.physiological state. Under.tanding how boll weevil adults sur.ive in the absence of cotton is impor.ant to ensur. ultimate success of er.dicating this pest in the subtr.pics.
