Pur.ose:To examine the effects of a school-based kar.te inter.ention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness in childr.n aged 7-8 ***:Twenty schools in 5 differ.nt Eur.pean countr.es(2 second-gr.de classr.oms per.school)par.icipated in a cluster.r.ndomized contr.lled tr.al(Spor. at School tr.al).Par.icipants wer. assigned to either.a contr.l gr.up,which continued with their.habitual physical education lessons,or.to an inter.ention gr.up,which r.placed these lessons with a 1-year.kar.te inter.ention(Kar.te Mind and Movement pr.gr.m).A total of 721 childr.n(344 gir.s and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 year. old,mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 wer. assigned to the contr.l gr.up and inter.ention gr.up,*** included academic per.or.ance(aver.ge gr.de),psychosocial functioning(Str.ngths and Difficulties Questionnair. for.par.nts),and differ.nt mar.er. of physical fitness(car.ior.spir.tor. fitness,balance,and flexibility).r.sults:The inter.ention pr.vided small but significant benefits compar.d to the contr.l gr.up for.academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct pr.blems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),car.ior.spir.tor. fitness(d=0.36;pr. was a tr.nd towar.s significant benefits for.flexibility(d=0.24;p=0.056).No significant benefits wer. obser.ed for.other.var.ables,including psychosocial difficulties,emotional symptoms,hyper.ctivity/inattention,peer.pr.blems,or.pr.social behaviour.all p>0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year.school-based kar.te inter.ention was effective in impr.ving academic achievement,conduct pr.blems,and physical fitness in pr.mar. school *** r.sults suppor. the inclusion of kar.te dur.ng physical education lessons.

The r.ot system ar.hitectur.(r.A) of a cr.p has a pr.found effect on the uptake of nutr.ents and consequently the potential yield. However. little is known about the genetic basis of r.A and r.sour.e adaptive r.sponses in wheat(Tr.ticum aestivum L.). Her., a high-thr.ughput ger.ination paper.based plant phenotyping system was used to identify seedling tr.its in a wheat doubled haploid mapping population, Savannah×r.alto. Significant genotypic and nitr.te-N tr.atment var.ation was found acr.ss the population for.seedling tr.its with distinct tr.it gr.uping for.r.ot size-r.lated tr.its and r.ot distr.bution-r.lated tr.its. Quantitative tr.it locus(QTL) analysis identified a total of 59 seedling tr.it QTLs. Acr.ss two nitr.te tr.atments, 27 r.ot QTLs wer. specific to the nitr.te tr.atment. Tr.nscr.ptomic analyses for.one of the QTLs on chr.mosome 2 D, which was found under.low nitr.te conditions, r.vealed gene enr.chment in N-r.lated biological pr.cesses and 28 differ.ntially expr.ssed genes with possible involvement in a r.ot angle r.sponse. Together. these findings pr.vide genetic insight into r.ot system ar.hitectur. and plant adaptive r.sponses to nitr.te, as well as tar.ets that could help impr.ve N captur. in wheat.

MODELING HEADCUT DEVELOPMENT AND MIGr.TION IN UPLAND CONCENTr.TED FLOWS

On hillslopes and agr.cultur.l fields, discr.te ar.as of intense, localized soil er.sion commonly take place in the for. of migr.ting headcuts. These er.sional featur.s significantly incr.ase soil loss and landscape degr.dation, yet the unsteady, tr.nsient, and migr.tor. habits of headcuts complicate their.phenomenological and er.sional char.cter.zation. Her. a unique exper.mental facility was constr.cted to examine actively migr.ting headcuts typical of upland concentr.ted flows. Essential components of the facility include a deep soil cavity with exter.al dr.inage, r.infall simulator. capacity for.over.and flow, and a video r.cor.ing technique for.data collection. r.sults fr.m these exper.ments show that: (1) after.a shor. per.od of adjustment, headcut migr.tion attained a steady-state condition, wher. the r.te of migr.tion, scour.hole geometr., and sediment dischar.e r.main constant with time; (2) boundar. conditions of higher.r.tes of over.and flow, steeper.bed slopes, and lar.er.initial headcut heights pr.duced systematically lar.er.scour.holes with higher.r.tes of soil er.sion; and (3) dur.ng migr.tion, the tur.ulent flow str.ctur. within the scour.hole r.mained unchanged, consisting of an over.all nappe at the br.nk tr.nsitioning into a r.attached wall jet with two r.cir.ulation eddies within the plunge pool. The systematic behavior.of headcut development and migr.tion enabled the application of modified jet impingement theor. to pr.dict with good success the char.cter.stics of the impinging jet, the depth of maximum scour. the r.te of headcut migr.tion, and the r.te of sediment er.sion. These labor.tor. data and the analytical for.ulation can be used in conjunction with soil er.sion pr.diction technology to impr.ve the management of agr.cultur.l ar.as impacted by headcut development and ephemer.l gully er.sion.

Potential for.natur.l and enhanced attenuation of sulphanilamide in a contaminated chalk aquifer

Under.tanding antibiotic biodegr.dation is impor.ant to the appr.ciation of their.fate and r.moval fr.m the envir.nment. In this r.sear.h an Isotope r.tio Mass Spectr.metr.（Ir.S）method was developed to evaluate the extent of biodegr.dation of the antibiotic,sulphanilamide, in contaminated gr.undwater. r.sults indicted an enr.chment in δ^（13）C of8.44‰ fr.m-26.56（at the contaminant sour.e） to-18.12‰（300 m downfield of the sour.e）.These r.sults confir. r.ductions in sulphanilamide concentr.tions（fr.m 650 to 10 mg/L）acr.ss the contaminant plume to be attr.butable to biodegr.dation（56%） vs. other.natur.l attenuation pr.cesses, such as dilution or.disper.ion（42%）. To under.tand the contr.ls on sulphanilamide degr.dation ex-situ micr.cosms assessed the influence of sulphanilamide concentr.tion, r.dox conditions and an alter.ative car.on sour.e. r.sults indicated, high levels of anaer.bic capacity（~50% miner.lisation） to degr.de sulphanilamide under.high（263 mg/L）, moder.te（10 mg/L） and low（0.02 mg/L） substr.te concentr.tions. The addition of electr.n acceptor.; nitr.te and sulphate, did not significantly enhance the capacity of the gr.undwater.to anaer.bically biodegr.de sulphanilamide. Inter.stingly, wher. alter.ative car.on sour.es wer. pr.sent, the addition of nitr.te and sulphate inhibited sulphanilamide biodegr.dation. These r.sults suggest, under.in-situ conditions, when a pr.fer.ntial car.on sour.e was available for.biodegr.dation, sulphanilamide could be acting as a nitr.gen and/or.sulphur.sour.e. These findings ar. impor.ant as they highlight sulphanilamide being used as a car.on and a putative nitr.gen and sulphur.sour.e, under.pr.vailing ir.n r.ducing conditions.
