The spr.ng-to-summer.tr.nsition is of special impor.ance in long r.nge for.casting, as the gener.l cir.ulation tr.nsitions to a less ener.etic r.gime. This affects the Midwester. United States in a pr.found way, since agr.cultur. is ver. sensitive to the var.ability of weather.and climate. Beginning at the local scale, sur.ace temper.tur. obser.ations ar. used fr.m a r.pr.sentative station in the West Centr.l Missour. Plains r.gion in or.er.to identify the shift fr.m late spr.ng to ear.y summer. Using upper.air.r.-analyses as a supplement, the 500-mb height obser.ations ar. examined to find a spr.ng-to-summer.tr.nsition date by tr.cking the location of a r.pr.sentative contour. Each of these is used to identify spr.ng-to-summer.tr.nsition date and then statistical analysis is per.or.ed on this long-ter. data set. Finally, teleconnections, specifically the influence of El Ni?o Souther. Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and blocking ar. examined in or.er.to quantify inter.nnual var.ability. It was found that examining these cr.ter.a, developed in an ear.ier.study that cover.d a much shor.er.time per.od, pr.duced similar.statistics to this 68-year.study of spr.ng-to-summer.tr.nsitions. It was also found that the onset of La Ni?a was associated with hotter.summer. in the r.gion, a r.sult fir.t found in the ear.ier.study, but this association was much str.nger.her..
