Background:Thrombocytopenia is a possible risk factor for bleeding after band ligation of esophageal ***,elevated von Willebrand factor(VWF)in cirrhosis improves platelet function and could decrease this *** objective was to assess platelet function in patients with cirrhosis undergoing esophageal variceal ligation(EVL).methods:The assessment consisted of platelet count,antigen and activity of VWF and VWF-cleaving protease ADAmTS-13 activity,and a platelet adhesion and aggregation test simulating vascular flow in vivo(Impact-rr)prior to ***:Totally 111 patients were divided into three groups according to platelet count:(1)100×109/L(n=26,23.4%).No statistically significant difference was found in the aggregate size of platelets[group 1:41.0(31.8–67.3)μm 2;group 2:47.0(33.8–71.3)μm 2;and group 3:47.0(34.0–66.0)μm 2;P=0.60]and no significant correlation was found between aggregate size and platelet count(Spearman r=0.07;P=0.47).Surface coverage was 4.1%(2.8%–6.7%),8.5%(4.0%–10.0%),and 9.0%(7.1%–12.0%)(Proups 1,2 and 3,respectively and correlated with platelet count(Spearman r=0.39;Pre was no significant difference between groups in VWF or ***-EVL bleeding occurred in six(5.4%)patients(n=2 in group 1,n=1 in group 2,and n=3 in group 3;P=0.32).Patients with bleeding had higher mELD scores[15.0(11.3–20.3)versus 12.0(10.0–15.0);P=0.025],but no difference was demonstrated for platelet function ***:Platelet function is preserved even in the presence of thrombocytopenia,including in the patients with post-EVL bleeding.

This paper aims to discuss the current status of conservation of freshwater turtles of the Amazon and the absence of the genus Podocnemis the Official List of Species of Brazilian Fauna Threatened with *** turtles are used as food by indigenous people and fisherman ***,fishing of adult females,uncontrolled egg collecting,habitat degradation and trafficking in wildlife have caused the decline of these ***,Podocnemis expansa and Podocnemis unifilis were not included in the Brazil’s official list of animals ***,the turtles remain at great risk,due to the intense pressure that they are *** is recommended that the criteria and the conservation status are reviewed including those animals in the category of vulnerable and to ensure a thorough review and modification in the current Brazilian law to be covered studies and management of turtles for subsistence,respecting and adding value to way of life of Amazonian peoples.

The cleft palate is a defect of longitudinal fusion that affects the bone and the mucosa in the midline of the hard *** defect in the fusion of the palatal lateral shelves from the maxillary processes results in an open cleft between the oral and nasal cavities,also known as secondary palatine *** objective of this work is to report the morphological characteristics of palatine clefts observed in stillborn dogs and neonates submitted to *** dogs were evaluated,from each animal the following data were obtained:clinical history,weight and morphometric ***,data regarding to:sex,fur color,malformations,and evaluations of natural openings were *** evaluated animal was delivered by caesarean section,50%of stillborn infants had cleft lip associated with secondary cleft palate,50%were female and only one stillborn was a mongrel *** others were from the brachycephalic *** was observed that the cleft palate was found,in great majority,in females,proving the association of sex with this congenital *** this sense,clinical inspection,including physical examination and anamnesis should be part of the assessment of the neonate patient as parameters to reach a diagnosis and,when it is possible,to be associated with a radiographic image as a complementary method,being the radiography an important auxiliary exam in this context.

Objective: To evaluate the trypanocidal, leishmanicidal and cytotoxic activity of Eugenia jambolana(E. jambolana) and Eugenia uniflora(E. uniflora) extracts and ***: The products were characterized by LC–mS. Antiparasitic assays were performed and cytotoxicity was evaluated in fibroblastos. In vitro assays were performed using spectrophotometric evaluation. All assays were performed in ***: The results showed that the extracts and the tannic fraction from E. jambolana inhibited 100% of the epimastigote lines. The ethanolic extract was the most efficient in all concentrations tested against the three parasite strains. In the cytotoxicity assay the flavonoid fraction showed low toxicity. All E. uniflora samples showed cytotoxicity at the highest concentration tested, but the extract showed no toxic effect on the fibroblasts at the lowest concentration. The flavonoid and tannic fractions were more efficient against Leishmania braziliensis promastigotes compared to the extract. However, the extracts and the tannic fraction were more effective against Leishmania infantum strains. The effect on epimastigote cells was observed at all concentrations tested, with all E. uniflora samples. However, the samples were more effective at the highest concentration, where there was inhibition in 100% of the Trypanosoma cruzi ***: The species E. jambolana and E. uniflora presented antiparasitic activity against all tested parasite strains, indicating that these species can serve as an alternative therapy as they were efficient in the tests performed. The E. uniflora extract and the E. jambolana flavonoid fraction presented a low cytotoxicity, opening the floor for new biological studies.

Therapeutic and prophylactic thalidomide in TNBS-induced colitis: Synergistic effects on TNF-α, IL-12 and VEGF production

AIm： To evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic effect of thalidomide on 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid （TNBS）-induced colitis. Thalidomide has been reported to downregulate the expression of tumor necrosis factor α （TNF-α）, IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF）, hallmarks of intestinal inflammation in Crohn＇s disease （CD）. mETHODS： male Wistar rats were divided in five groups of ten animals each. Four groups received a rectal infusion of TNBS in ethanol. The first group was sacrificed 7 d after colitis induction. The second and third groups received either thalidomide or placebo by gavage and were sacrificed at 14 d. The fourth group received thalidomide 6 h before TNBS administration, and was sacrificed 7 d after induction. The fifth group acted as the control group and colitis was not induced. Histological inflammatory scores of the colon were performed and lamina propria CD4＋ T cells, macrophages, and VEGF＋ cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. TNF-α and IL-12 were quantified in the supernatant of organ cultures by ELISA. rESULTS： Significant reduction in the inflammatory score and in the percentage of VEGF＋ cells was observed in the group treated with thalidomide compared with animals not treated with thalidomide. Both TNF-α and IL-12 levels were significantly reduced among TNBS induced colitis animals treated with thalidomide compared with animals that did not receive thalidomide. TNF-α levels were also significantly reduced among the animals receiving thalidomide prophylaxis compared with untreated animals with TNBS-induced colitis. Intestinal levels of TNF-α and IL-12 were significantly correlated with the inflammatory score and the number of VEGF＋ cells. CONCLUSION： Thalidomide significantly attenuates TNBS-induced colitis by inhibiting the intestinal production of TNF-α, IL-12, and VEGF. This effect may support the use of thalidomide as an alternate approach in selected patients with CD.

Use of fly and bottom ashes from a thermoelectrical plant in the synthesis of geopolymers:Evaluation of reaction efficiency

The use of by-products as raw materials in the manufacturing of industrial products has risen in the last years because of environmental *** example is the use of coal ashes from thermalelectrical plants in the production of geopolymer–a green cement made by mixing aluminosilicate with alkaline *** this study,fly and bottom ashes from a thermal-electrical unit were used as sources of aluminosilicate in the synthesis of geopolymers.A mixture of sodium hydroxide(10 mol/L)and sodium silicate(SiO_(2)/Na_(2)O ratio of 2.2)was used as the alkaline *** type(fly or bottom ash)and content of the ash were the variables in the *** ashes were characterized by X-ray fluorescence(XrF),X-ray diffraction(DrX),particle size distribution(PSD),specific surface area(BET),and thermal analysis(DTA/TGA).The ash-based geopolymer samples were measured to obtain their compressive strength after *** evolution of the geopolymerization process was also assessed based on final alkali concentration *** results show that it is possible to obtain geopolymers using coal ashes as raw materials with high solid *** compressive strength for the bottom ash geopolymer after 90 days of curing is 35 *** low concentration of unreacted alkalis after curing(1.5×10^(-3)e 3.5×10^(-3)m)corresponds to high efficiency of the geopolymerization reaction.

Artificial Enamel Wear after Prolonged Chewing Simulation against monolithic Y-TZP Crowns

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chewing simulation on wear of artificial enamel abraded against zirconia-based crowns. Fifteen crown preparations were scanned for the manufacturing of crowns using computer-aided-design/computer-aided-machining technique (CAD/CAm), according to the following (n = 5): Polished (Pm) and glazed (Gm) monolithic zirconia (1.5 mm uniform thickness), and Bilayer (BL - 0.8 mm zirconia coping, 0.7 mm porcelain veneer) crowns. The samples were cemented and chewing simulation (2.5 million cycles/0-80N/artificial saliva/37°C) was performed with steatite indenters (6 mm diameter) as antagonists. Assuming the uniformity of the unaged samples, antagonists were scanned using a surface profilometer and the material loss volume was calculated. roughness of the crowns’ occlusal surface was also analyzed using the profilometer. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the abraded surface. One-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p = 0.05) were employed for analysis of wear results. A significant difference was observed among the groups (p 3 ± 0.015) than those abraded against monolithic zirconia, polished (Pm - 0.167 mm3 ± 0.02) and glazed (0.101 mm3 ± 0.03), which were similar to each other. Veneering porcelain results in more pronounced wear of the artificial enamel than monolithic zirconia. However, mastication against monolithic Y-TZP also imposes wear to the opposing teeth.

Half-Life of Glyphosate on the Control of Water Hyacinths in Water Tanks

The present study had the purpose to assess the behavior of the herbicide glyphosate in the control of water hyacinths, in a water environment through half-life, in a controlled and closed experimental field, in order to contribute to the analysis of the risk of the environmental impact of the use of this product. Eight fiber-cement tanks with the storage capacity of 250 liters were used under the conditions without water flow and without replacement of water. The experiment was designed in two treatments with four repetitions, the first being colonized by water hyacinths and the second without the presence of the macrophyte. The recommended dose, according to the manufacturer, was 7.0 L·ha-1 or 3402 g·ha-1 of equivalent acid. For the application in the tanks, we have used carbon dioxide (CO2) precision equipment, providing a flow rate of 200 L·ha-1. The samples were collected on the day of the application (day zero) and 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 days thereafter (DAP). The method used for determination of residues was by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry with a mass selective detector. From the mathematical model of charge decay, the half-life of glyphosate in water was estimated to six days for the tanks without water hyacinths and sixteen days for the tanks colonized by macrophytes. The result obtained permits to conclude that the glyphosate in water is quickly degraded in closed water environments and does not leave residues that would prevent its use.

Thermal and Crystallization Behavior of PLA/PLLA-Grafting Cellulose Nanocrystal

PLLA-modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were produced from commercial CNC by tin-catalyzed polymerization of lactide in presence of CNC. FTIr spectroscopy demonstrated that the result of the reaction produced the grafting of PLLA chains onto CNC surface (CNC-g-PLLA). Films of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and PLA/CNC nanocomposites (with non-modified CNC and CNC-g-PLLA) containing 0.5% and 5% (w/w) of the nanofillers were prepared by casting in chloroform solution and the crystallization behavior and thermal properties investigated. All nano-composites had similar thermal stability when analyzed by TGA analyses under an inert nitrogen atmosphere. Addition of both types of CNC influenced crystallization, the higher crystallization rate being observed for 5% (w/w) CNC. Nanocomposites with 5% (w/w) CNC-g-PLLA had the strain resistance of PLA improved in the rubbery state. PLLA-modification of CNC surface increased the crystallization of PLA in PLA/CNC nanocomposites and improved the rigidity at temperatures above the glass transition, properties which are desirable for hot drinking application.

Objective:To identify whether Canova medication changes TNF-α and IL-10 serum levels in mice infected with Trypanosoma cruzi Y ***:Animals were divided into five groups:non-treated infected animals(I); benznidazole-treated infected animals(Bz; 100 mg/kg body weight,single daily dose by gavage); Canova medication(Cm) treated infected animals(Cm;0.2 mL/animal,single daily dose by gavage); benznidazole- and Canova medication–treated infected animals with the above-mentioned dose(Bz+Cm);and non-infected animals(C).TNF-α and IL-10 levels were determined in serum aliquots after 4,7,10,13,and 29 days of *** ELISA technique was employed with r&D System *** ***:A high increase in TNF-α and IL-10 levels occurred in the infected and Cm-treated groups within the treatment employed on the 10 th day after infection,coupled with a IL-10 decrease on the 13 th day after infection when compared with the other experimental ***:Cm may change the balance between plasma cytokine levels(TNF-α and IL-10) in mice infected with Y strain ***,with important consequences leading towards a more severe infection.
