Synthesis,Structural and Photophysical Properties of Gd_(2)O_(3):Eu^(3+)Nanostructures Prepared by a Microwave Sintering Process

In this paper, we report the obtention of gadolinium oxide doped with europium (Gd2O3:Eu+3) by thermal decomposition of the Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ precursor prepared by the microwave assisted hydrothermal method. These systems were analyzed by thermalgravimetric analyses (TGA/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XrD), structural rietveld refinement method, fourrier transmission infrared absorbance spectroscopy (fT-Ir), field emission scanning electron microscopy (fE-SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurement. XrD patterns, rietveld refinement analysis and fT-Ir confirmed that the Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ precursor crystallize in a hexagonal structure and space group P6/m, while the Gd2O3:Eu3+ powders annealed in range of 500°C and 700°C crystallized in a cubic structure with space group Ia-3. fE-SEM images showed that Gd(OH)3:Eu3+ precursor and Gd2O3:Eu3+ are composed by aggregated and polydispersed particles structured as nanorods-like morphology. The excitation spectra consisted of an intense broad band with a maximum at 263 nm and the Eu3+ ions can be excitated via matrix. The emission spectra presented the characteristics transitions of the Eu3+ ion, whose main emission, , is observed at 612 nm. The photophysical properties indicated that the microwave sintering treatment favored the Eu3+ ions connected to the O-Gd linkages in the Gd2O3 matrix. Also, the emission in the Gd2O3:Eu3+ comes from the energy transfered from the Gd-O linkages to the clusters in the crystalline structure.

Palicourea rigida H.B.K. (rubiaceae), a medicinal species commonly known as douradinha, has wide distribution across ecosystems in Central and South America. This species exhibits seed dormancy delaying germination until optimal conditions for seedling growth and development are in place. While dormancy ensures species survival, it also presents a technical problem for developing P. rigida’s plant production program. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate if secondary metabolites present in seeds influence the seed dormancy of P. rigida. Mature fruits were harvested from the native habitat, in the savanna region of the State of Minas Gerais during february 2009, 2010 and 2011. The content of phenolic compounds in the seed of P. rigida was measured, and the allelopathic effects were assessed using the germination of lettuces as model to detect phytotoxicity. The P. rigida seeds geminated at rates varying between 7% and 31% with a Seed Germination Index (SGI) of 0.09. Data suggest that the phenolic compounds present in the seeds may be responsible for seed dormancy.

Background: Modifications in social habits together with the increase of emigration have contributed not only to increased dermatophytoses but also to an altered etiology. During the last few years, Braga has suffered a radical change from a rural to a cosmopolitan life-style. Methods: A statistical study of dermatophytoses and the etiology of their causative agents was performed by a retrospective survey carried out among patients of Hospital de S o Marcos, Braga, Portugal, from 1983- 2002. In this study, a total of 10- 003 patients were analyzed. results: Over this period the frequency of dermatophytoses, as defined by the recovery of a dermatophyte in culture, was found to be 23.6% , whereas nondermatophytic infections accounted for 7.0% . Analysis of the clinical form s and the isolated fungi supports that the dermatophyte species have a predilection for certain body areas (P ≤ 0.01). Age is a very important factor regarding the occurrence of dermatophytoses (P ≤ 0.0001), with a correlation between increasing age and infection, positive for Trichophyton rubrum and negative for Microsporum canis. Overall the gender of the patients is not an association factor for the development of dermatophytoses; however, significant differences were detected in the distribution of some etiologic agents (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: The results showed the main etiologic agent of dermatophytoses to be Trichophyton rubrum (37.4% ). Moreover, dermatophytoses are both decreasing and showing a new profile in Braga, and a pronounced decrease of Trichophyton megninii was observed throughout the study.

Cell replication and Angiogenesis in Central Nervous System Tumors and Their relationship with the Expression of Tissue Prolactin and Hyperprolactinemia

This study aimed to assess the effect of intracellular prolactin (ICPrL) and hyperprolactinemia on cell replication, using an immunohistochemical (IHC) technique for Ki-67 and Mcm-2, and angiogenesis, using IHC for endoglin CD-105, in central nervous system (CNS) tumors. This cross-sectional study included 79 cases of surgically excised primary CNS tumors of neuroepithelial origin (41.8% of all cases: 10.2% astrocytomas, 24% glioblastomas and 7.6% oligodendrogliomas) and meningeal origin (58.2% of all cases). Ki-67 and Mcm-2 indexes were calculated as a percentage of marked cells. The medians for Ki-67 and Mcm-2 indexes were significantly lower in meningiomas than in glioblastomas (p S = 0.60) replication markers. There were no significant differences in vascular density between the different histological types. Immunohistochemistry for ICPrL was positive in 45.6% of the tumors. Serum prolactin (PrL) was elevated in 30.6% of the cases. Multiple regression analysis revealed no important correlation of ICPrL and serum PrL on Ki-67 and Mcm-2 indexes or vascular density. The analysis of the combined impact of ICPrL and serum PrL variables revealed a trend towards an increase in microvessel density in tumor tissue and a significant increase in cell replication markers (p = 0.009 for Ki-67 and p = 0.05 for Mcm-2). PrL in tumor tissue may be one of the modulating factors of cell proliferation in the CNS.

Leukemic stromal hematopoietic microenvironment negatively regulates the normal hematopoiesis in mouse model of leukemia

Background and Objective: Leukemic microenvironment has a major role in the progression of leukemia. Leukemic cells can induce reversible changes in microenvironmental components, especially the stromal function which results in improved growth conditions for maintaining the malignant leukemic cells. This study aimed to investigate the survival advantage of leukemic cells over normal hematopoietic cells in stromal microenvironment in long term. Methods: The mice were injected intraperitoneally with N-N’ ethylnitrosourea (ENU) to induce leukemia; the mice received injection of normal saline were used as control. At 180 days after ENU induction, the mice were killed and the bone marrows were cultured for 19 days. Colony-forming assays were used to analyze the formation of various cell colonies. The expression of Sca-1, CD146, VEGfr2, CD95, pStat3, pStat5, and Bcl-xL in marrow cells were detected by flow cytometry. results: Long-term leukemic bone marrow culture showed abnormal elongated stromal fibroblasts with almost absence of normal hematopoietic cells. Adherent cell colonies were increased, but CfU-f and other hematopoietic cell colonies were significantly decreased in leukemia group (Primitive progenitor-specific Sca-1 receptor expression was decreased with subsequent increased expression of CD146 and VEGfr-2 in leukemic bone marrow cells. Decreased fas antigen expression with increased intracellular pStat3, pStat5 and Bcl-xL proteins were observed in leukemic bone marrow cells. Conclusions: Stromal microenvironment shows altered morphology and decreased maturation in leukemia. Effective progenitor cells are decreased in leukemia with increased leukemia-specific cell population. Leukemic microenvironment plays a role in promoting and maintaining the leukemic cell proliferation and survivability in long term.

Dehydrated Natural feed for Cats: Influence on Apparent Digestibility Coefficient, feces Scores, and Serum Immune, Antioxidant, and Metabolic Biomarkers

The present study aimed to determine whether natural dehydrated feed (DNf) can replace dry extruded feed while preserving the required daily intake, nutrient digestibility and benefits for immunity and antioxidant response in cats. The animals were divided into two groups of seven animals each. One group received DNf, and the other consumed commercial extruded dry feed (DCf). The experiment lasted 45 days and we measured daily consumption and collected blood and feces samples. The animals in the DNf group showed greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter than DCf. Cats in the DNf group had a higher volume of feces. DNf cats had lower leukocyte and granulocyte counts and cholesterol levels. Serum enzymatic antioxidant responses and non-enzymatic were higher in DNf cats. Cats in the DNf group showed lower serum acute phase proteins in addition to a tendency toward a higher concentration of transferrin than in the DCf group. fecal Escherichia coli and total coliform counts of cats fed DNf were higher than DCf. We conclude that the daily consumption of cats is adequate. This feed had greater digestibility of fiber and mineral matter, in addition to an improvement in antioxidant and immunological responses.

Objective: The present work aims to evaluate the impact of the activities of nursing consultations on health conditions of children served in Clínica de Enfermagem Salvando Vidas com Educa??o. Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, realized from January through December 2012, at the Clínica de Enfermagem (Nursing Clinic), in the Santa Cruz County, rio Grande do Norte’s countryside, Brazil. results: The obtained results showed a significant correlation between the type of pathology and final treatment proven by the value of p = 0.000;as for assessed 60%, more than half were discharged;the most prevalent diseases were the association between cutaneous and gastric with 11% who were discharged and, lastly, the association between gastric and respiratory with 7% discharged. Conclusion: Thus, the activities developed by the project are not restricted to the examination during the nursing consultation, since educational activities are planned from the data obtained in those consultations.
