Grape processing generates residues rich in bioactive compounds with potential application in the meat ***,these substances are unstable and needs to be treated to allow their action during the processing and storage of meat *** this sense,a phenolic-rich extract from grape pomace was microencapsulated and evaluated for its potential to inhibit the oxidative process in raw and precooked beef burgers during cold *** hamburger formulations containing lyophilized extract(LEB),microencapsulated extract(MEB)and synthetic antioxidant sodium erythorbate(SEB)were prepared,pre-cooked,and evaluated for lipid and protein *** microencapsulation,with 95.0%efficiency,provided a material with a crystalline structure,rich in phenolics and with high antioxidant potential,showing 377.4±0.01,1768.1±0.07 and 1185.0±0.20μmol TEAC.100 g−1 for DPPH,ABTS and frAP,*** values of malonaldehyde were found in LEB and MEB(2.9±0.3 and 1.4±0.5 mg ***−1,respectively)at the end of storage,with emphasis on for the hamburgers that received the microencapsulated *** behavior was observed for the analysis of carbonyl compounds,with values of 11.1±1.1,8.7±1.4 and 6.8±1.0 nM ***−1 in SEB,LEB and MEB,***,the freeze-dried and microencapsulated grape extracts showed superior results when compared to the synthetic antioxidant,increasing the oxidative stability of hamburgers,and avoiding significant color changes during the cold *** results indicate the high potential of the microencapsulated material to be used as a natural antioxidant in the meat industry.

Treatment of Materials Contaminated with Polychlorinated Biphenyls(Pcbs):Comparison of Traditional Method and Supercritical fluid Extraction

The objective of this study was to develop an experimental methodology for the extraction of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from contaminated soil and wood material using the Soxhlet extraction method and supercritical fluid technology. The sample PCB contents were quantified using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Conventional extractions of PCBs from soil samples showed higher extraction yields for samples with the highest initial PCB levels and longest extraction times. Specific PCBs yielded 74.0% - 78.3% removal using ethanol as the solvent. 91.0% - 94.3% removal of the total PCB content was achieved using hexane as the solvent. Supercritical fluid extraction of soil samples resulted in 50.0% - 70.5% removal for specific PCBs and 57.3% removal of the total PCB content. for wood, the use of Soxhlet extraction resulted in 87.0% - 94.0% removal for specific PCBs and 95.0% - 96.3% removal of the total PCB content. Supercritical fluid extraction of wood samples resulted in 91.1% - 95.0% removal of specific PCBs and 95.1 % of the total PCB content.

Objective: To report atypical morphological features of Trichophyton(T.) tonsurans strains associated with tinea capitis. Methods: Eighty-two T. tonsurans strains isolated in Ceará, Brazil, were analyzed regarding macro and micromorphological features and nutritional patterns. results: fifty-two samples presented abundant chlamydoconidia, which were produced in chains. Macroscopically, these strains developed small glabrous colonies that were firmly attached to the surface of the culture medium, with few or no aerial mycelia and intense rusty yellow pigmentation. Seven strains did not grow with stimulus from thiamine. Samples were heterogeneous regarding urease production and none presented in vitro hair perforation. Conclusions: The observation of T. tonsurans strains with distinct phenotypic features indicates the need to revise the taxonomic criteria for routine identification of this dermatophyte.

A method for adsorption involving banana peel (BP) was studied to remove the pollutant acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in aqueous medium. The results show that bioadsorbent has satisfactory maximum adsorption capacity (2.29 mg/g) for removing this analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug in aqueous solution (pH 7.0) using the Langmuir mathematical model. The tested concentrations of this pollutant were higher than the levels commonly found in the aquatic environment. This and other results suggest the BP as an alternative to ASA removal in water contaminated with pharmaceuticals pollutants.

Objective:To investigate the isolation of enterobacteria associated with Macrobrachium amazonicum(***) farming and evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of Vibrio ***:Strains were isolated from female *** prawns and environmental and hatchery *** assays were used to identify bacterial genera and those belonging to the genus Vibrio were submitted to further analyses for species identification,through Vitek 2 automated system and *** test was performed according to Clinical Laboratory Standards ***:The following genera of enlerobacteria were recovered:Enterobacter(n=11),Citrobacter(n=10),Proteus(n=2),Serratia(n=2),Kluyvera(n=2),Providencia(n=2),Cedecea(n=1),Escherichia(n=1).Edwardsiella(n=1) and BulliauxeUa(n=1).As for Vibrio,three species were identified:Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139(n=4).Vibrio vulnificus(***)(n=1) and Vibrio mimicus(n=1).Vibrio *** minimum inhibitory concentrations values within the susceptibility range established by Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute for almost all antibiotics,except for ***,which presented intermediate profile to ***:Enterobacteria do not seem to be the most important pathogens associated with *** farming,whereas the recovery of Vibrio *** larviculture,with emphasis on Vibrio cholerae and ***,deserves special attention due to their role as potentially zoonotic aquaculture-associated ***,the intermediate susceptibility of *** to ampicillin reflects the importance of monitoring drug use in prawn farming.

Open abdomen in gastrointestinal surgery:Which technique is the best for temporary closure during damage control?

AIM To compare the 3 main techniques of temporary closure of the abdominal cavity,vacuum assisted closure(vacuum-assisted closure therapy- VAC),Bogota bag and Barker technique,in damage control *** After systematic review of the literature,33 articles were selected to compare the efficiency of the three *** such as cost,infections,capacity of reconstruction of the abdominal wall,diseases associated with the technique,among others were *** The Bogota bag and Barker techniques present as advantage the availability of material and low cost,what is not observed in the VAC *** VAC technique is the most efficient,not only because it reduces the tension on the boarders of the lesion,but also removes stagnant fluids and debris and acts at cellular level increasing cell proliferation and *** bag presents the higher rates of skin laceration and evisceration,greater need for a stent for draining fluids and wash-ups,higher rates of intestinal adhesion to the abdominal *** Barker technique presents lack of efficiency in closing the abdominal wall and difficulty on maintaining pressure on the *** VAC dressing can generate irritation and dermatitis when the drape is applied,in addition to pain,infection and bleeding,as well as toxic shock syndrome,anaerobic sepsis and *** The VAC technique,showed to be superior allowing a better control of liquid on the third space,avoiding complications such as fistula with small mortality,low infection rate,and easier capability on primary closure of the abdominal cavity.

Can Brazil Become a Green Hydrogen Powerhouse?

This paper assesses the feasibility of green hydrogen production in Brazil. By green hydrogen, it is meant the hydrogen produced by the electrolysis of water by consuming electricity produced by renewable sources. The country has large areas with high solar irradiation and favorable wind velocities that help to make wind power and solar PV economical alternatives. Other factors include lower investments and lower grid integration cost with respect to global average, because of the large share of hydropower. As known, hydro plants respond well to the short-term variability of renewable production. Local regulations also incentivize renewable energy. For example, it is possible, according to market rules, for a hydrogen producer to sign a financial Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) contract with a producer or trader to secure a firm,font-family:Verdana;"> renewable energy supply for the electrolysis process. This market-driven factor, and other key factors, such as low price of electricity, are considered in an economic feasibility model. results from this model suggest that Brazil could become a green hydrogen powerhouse for the internal market and potential exports to Germany and other European countries.

Autoimmune hepatitis in a patient infected by HIV-1 and under highly active antiretroviral treatment:Case report and literature review

Liver disease has recently been described as an im-portant cause of morbidity and mortality in patientsinfected with human immunodeficiency virus （HIV）.Liver test changes are useful surrogates of the burdenof liver disease. Previous studies have shown that trans-aminase elevations are frequent among these *** cause of those changes is harder to establish inHIV-patients. We present a 61-year-old caucasian male,diagnosed with HIV type 1 infection since 1998, underhighly active antiretroviral treatment （HAArT）, withvirological suppression and immunological *** presented in a follow-up laboratory workup highvalues of transaminases, arthralgia at the hip joints and hepatomegaly. Liver function tests were normal. Theantibodies to hepatitis viruses were negative. However,autoimmune study and liver biopsy were compatible with autoimmune hepatitis （AIH）. The AIH is a rare di-agnosis in HIV-infected patients perhaps because the elevation of transaminases and changes in liver function tests are often associated to HAArT or to other possible liver diseases, namely viral hepatitis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. The diagnosis may be underestimated. There are no specifc recommendations available for the treatment of HIV-associated AIH although the immuno-supression with slower tapering seems the most reason-able approach.

Questions relating to premenstrual asthma

The study of asthma in fertile women needs to consider its potentially recurrent exacerbation in a specific phase of the menstrual cycle. Premenstrual asthma(PMA)refers to the deterioration of asthma in some women of fertile age during the premenstrual phase. Prevalence varies considerably according to studies(11%-47.44%) mainly because there is no standardized definition of the illness. There is a possible link between PMA and premenstrual syndrome, which is a set of physical and psychic manifestations that occur in some fertile women during the same premenstrual phase. This relation has been widely studied but there are still several unknowns. PMA etiopathogeny is not known. It involves possible causes such as hormonal variations in the premenstrual phase, the coexistence of atopy, variations during the cycle in substances related to inflammation, like LTC4 leukotrienes, catecholamines, E2 and f2α prostaglandins and certain cytokines. Also considered are psychological factors related to this phase of the menstrual cycle, a high susceptibility to infection or increased bronchial hyperreactivity prior to menstruation. Yet no factor fully explains its etiology, consequently no specific treatment exists. researchers have investigated hormones, antileukotrienes, prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors, diuretics, phytoestrogens and alternative therapies, but none has been shown to be effective.

Pb Isotopes Study in recent Sediments from Paraty Bay (rio de Janeiro, Brazil): Antropogenic Versus Oceanic Signatures

We carried out Pb isotopes studies in sediments fromParatyBaylocated in the SE area of therio de JaneiroStateto discriminate the signature of metal contamination from domestic sewage, industries, shipyards and geogenic sources. The studied samples have been chosen in two sectors of the Bay, including the Paraty area andJuatingaBay. Sample preparation procedures included: 1) drying and granulometric separations (200 mesh);2) weighting;3) complete dissolution and 4) Pb isotope analysis obtained by MC-ICP-MS (ratios 208Pb/204Pb,207Pb/204Pb, 206Pb/204Pb). Preliminary results when plotted in the 207Pb/204Pbversus 208Pb/204Pb and 207Pb/206Pb versus 206Pb/204Pb diagrams showed three groups of signatures. The first group (samples PY-01, PY-03 PY-106 and PY-127) presented 207Pb/206Pb values in the range from 1.191 to 1.209. The isotope values may be interpreted as contribution of a pollutant sources of Pb not yet identified. The second group (PY-11, PY-13, PY-21, PY-22, PY-46, PY-51, PY-109 and PY-111) showed 207Pb/206Pb values in the range from 1.188 to 1.222. The last group (samples PY-123 and PY-135) presented higher 207Pb/ 206Pb values from 1.321 to 1.322 and probably represented oceanic signature. The Pb isotope data of the second group may be interpreted as the result of oceanic water and pollutant sources mixture from the continent. According to the literature the anomalous Pb signature is similar to anthropogenic source. The Pb isotope results here reported are coherent with the reported data from the continent area. We may conclude that significant isotopic differences in Pb signatures are consequence of anthropogenic Pb isotope signature. In this way, Pb isotope is an important tool to trace the changing sources of pollutant Pb (and other metals) in ocean environment.
