3D Photo-fabrication for Tissue Engineering and Drug Delivery

The most promising strategies in tissue engineering involve the integration of a triad of biomaterials, living cells, and biologically active molecules to engineer synthetic environments that closely mimic the healing milieu present in human tissues, and that stimulate tissue repair and regeneration. To be clinically effective, these environments must replicate, as closely as possible, the main characteristics of the native extracellular matrix(ECM) on a cellular and subcellular scale. Photo-fabrication techniques have already been used to generate 3D environments with precise architectures and heterogeneous composition, through a multi-layer procedure involving the selective photocrosslinking reaction of a light-sensitive prepolymer. Cells and therapeutic molecules can be included in the initial hydrogel precursor solution, and processed into 3D constructs. recently, photofabrication has also been explored to dynamically modulate hydrogel features in real time, providing enhanced control of cell fate and delivery of bioactive compounds. This paper focuses on the use of 3D photo-fabrication techniques to produce advanced constructs for tissue regeneration and drug delivery applications. State-of-the-art photo-fabrication techniques are described, with emphasis on the operating principles and biofabrication strategies to create spatially controlled patterns of cells and bioactive factors. Considering its fast processing, spatiotemporal control, high resolution, and accuracy, photo-fabrication is assuming a critical role in the design of sophisticated 3D constructs. This technology is capable of providing appropriate environments for tissue regeneration, and regulating the spatiotemporal delivery of therapeutics.

Skin is widely used as a drug delivery route due to its easy access and the possibility of using relatively painless methods for the administration of bioactive ***,the barrier properties of the skin,along with its multilayer structure,impose severe restrictions on drug transport and ***,bioengineered models aimed at emulating the skin have been developed not only for optimizing the transdermal transport of different drugs and testing the safety and toxicity of substances but also for understanding the biological processes behind skin *** though in vivo research is often preferred to study biological processes involving the skin,in vitro and ex vivo strategies have been gaining increasing relevance in recent ***,there is a noticeably increasing adoption of in vitro and ex vivo methods by internationally accepted ***,microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices are nowadays emerging as valuable tools for functional and behavioural skin *** in miniaturization,automation and reliability still need to be addressed in order to create skin models that can predict skin behaviour in a robust,high-throughput manner,while being compliant with regulatory issues,standards and *** this review,skin models for transdermal transport,wound repair and cutaneous toxicity will be discussed with a focus on high-throughput *** microfluidic strategies driven by advancements in microfabrication technologies will also be revised as a way to improve the efficiency of existing models,both in terms of complexity and throughput.

Operator Splitting for Three-Phase flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media

We describe an operator splitting technique based on physics rather than on dimension for the numerical solution of a nonlinear system of partial differential equations which models three-phase flow through heterogeneous porous *** model for three-phase flow considered in this work takes into account capillary forces,general relations for the relative permeability functions and variable porosity and permeability *** our numerical procedure a high resolution,nonoscillatory,second order,conservative central difference scheme is used for the approximation of the nonlinear system of hyperbolic conservation laws modeling the convective transport of the fluid *** scheme is combined with locally conservative mixed finite elements for the numerical solution of the parabolic and elliptic problems associated with the diffusive transport of fluid phases and the pressure-velocity *** numerical procedure has been used to investigate the existence and stability of nonclassical shock waves(called transitional or undercompressive shock waves)in two-dimensional heterogeneous flows,thereby extending previous results for one-dimensional flow *** experiments indicate that the operator splitting technique discussed here leads to computational efficiency and accurate numerical results.

Quantum entanglement and squeezing have significantly improved phase estimation and imaging in interferometric settings beyond the classical ***,for a wide class of non-interferometric phase imaging/retrieval methods vastly used in the classical domain,e.g.,ptychography and diffractive imaging,a demonstration of quantum advantage is still ***,we fill this gap by exploiting entanglement to enhance imaging of a pure phase object in a non-interferometric setting,only measuring the phase effect on the free-propagating *** method,based on the so-called"transport of intensity equation",is quantitative since it provides the absolute value of the phase without prior knowledge of the object and operates in wide-field mode,so it does not need time-consuming raster ***,it does not require spatial and temporal coherence of the incident *** a general improvement of the image quality at a fixed number of photons irradiated through the object,resulting in better discrimination of small details,we demonstrate a clear reduction of the uncertainty in the quantitative phase *** we provide an experimental demonstration of a specific scheme in the visible spectrum,this research also paves the way for applications at different wavelengths,e.g.,X-ray imaging,where reducing the photon dose is of utmost importance.

Highly electroactive N–fe hydrothermal carbons and carbon nanotubes for the oxygen reduction reaction

Glucose-derived carbons were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization of glucose followed by carbonization or activation to obtain carbon materials with different microporosities. These microporous carbons and carbon nanotubes(CNTs) were functionalized with melamine and/or iron(Ⅱ) phthalocyanine(fePc)following three different methodologies:(i) functionalization with melamine via thermal treatment,(ii)incorporation of the lowest amount of fePc reported in the literature via incipient wetness impregnation followed by thermal treatment and(iii) functionalization with melamine followed by fe Pc *** chemical and textural characterization of the prepared materials and their electrochemical assessment allowed to understand the role of microporosity in the incorporation of fePc and its effect on the oxygen reduction reaction(Orr). It was observed that fePc was preferentially incorporated inside the porous structure, especially in samples with more developed microporosity. However, functionalization with melamine modified the textural properties and the surface chemistry, favoring the incorporation of fePc on the surface. regarding the electrochemical performance, the presence of fePc greatly enhanced the electroactivity of the microporous catalysts. An onset potential of 0.88 V and a four-electron pathway were obtained for glucose-derived carbons, whereas the limiting current densities and kinetic current densities rose by 126% and 222%, respectively, in comparison to the base sample. Notwithstanding, the highest electrochemical activity was observed for the sample prepared with CNTs, due to the synergy between the active metal centers and their highly graphitic carbon structure. The electrochemical parameters of CNTfeP csurpass the commercial Pt/C. The half-wave potential is 40 mV higher, the limiting current density increases by 17%, and a negligible production of by-products(rved.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM)and scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET)were used to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of the top surface of the 2098-T351 alloy welded by friction stir welding(fSW).The SVET technique was efficient in identifying the cathodic and anodic weld *** welding joint(WJ),which comprises the thermomechanically affected zone(TMAZ)and the stir zone(SZ),was cathodic relative to the heated affected zone(HAZ)and the base metal(BM).The reactivities of the welding joint at the advancing side(AS)and the retreating side(rS)were analyzed and compared using SECM technique in the competition mode by monitoring the dissolved oxygen as a redox mediator in 0.005 mol L^-1 NaCl *** rS was more electrochemically active than the AS,and these results were correlated with the microstructural features of the welded alloy.

Experimental and numerical characterization of 3D‑printed scaffolds under monotonic compression with the aid of micro‑CT volume reconstruction

Even when damaged by injury or disease bone tissue has the remarkable ability to *** this process is limited by large size bone defects,tissue engineering is responsible for restoring,maintaining or improving tissue *** are support structures,designed to be implanted in the damaged site,supporting mechanical loads and protecting the regenerating bone *** this paper,3D-printed PLA scaffolds with three different porosity values and two different geometries were experimentally and numerically ***-CT analysis showed that fused filament fabrication can be used to produce scaffolds with the desired porosity and 100%of interconnected *** monotonical compression,scaffolds apparent compressive modulus increased from 89 to 918 MPa,while yield stress increased from 2.9 to 27.5 MPa as porosity decreased from 70 to 30%.Open porosity decreased up to 8%on aligned scaffolds and 14%on staggered scaffolds,after compression,while scaffold’s surface-to-volume ratio highest reduction(7.48 to 4.55 mm−1)was obtained with aligned low porosity ***-CT volume reconstruction allowed for scaffold simplified numerical models to be built and *** agreement was found when predicting scaffold’s apparent compressive ***,it can be concluded that 3D printing is a viable scaffold manufacturing technique for trabecular bone replacement.

Efficient mid-infrared single-photon detection using superconducting NbTiN nanowires with high time resolution in a Gifford-McMahon cryocooler

Shortly after their inception, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors(SNSPDs) became the leading quantum light detection technology. With the capability of detecting single-photons with near-unity efficiency,high time resolution, low dark count rate, and fast recovery time, SNSPDs outperform conventional single-photon detection techniques. However, detecting lower energy single photons(fficiency and low timing jitter has remained a challenge. To achieve unity internal efficiency at mid-infrared wavelengths, previous works used amorphous superconducting materials with low energy gaps at the expense of reduced time resolution(close to a nanosecond), and by operating them in complex milli Kelvin(mK) dilution refrigerators. In this work,we provide an alternative approach with SNSPDs fabricated from 5 to 9.5 nm thick NbTiN superconducting films and devices operated in conventional Gifford-McMahon cryocoolers. By optimizing the superconducting film deposition process, film thickness, and nanowire design, our fiber-coupled devices achieved >70% system detection efficiency(SDE) at 2 μm and sub-15 ps timing jitter. furthermore, detectors from the same batch demonstrated unity internal detection efficiency at 3 μm and 80% internal efficiency at 4 μm, paving the road for an efficient mid-infrared single-photon detection technology with unparalleled time resolution and without mK cooling requirements. We also systematically studied the dark count rates(DCrs) of our detectors coupled to different types of mid-infrared optical fibers and blackbody radiation filters. This offers insight into the trade-off between bandwidth and DCrs for mid-infrared SNSPDs. To conclude, this paper significantly extends the working wavelength range for SNSPDs made from polycrystalline NbTiN to 1.5–4 μm, and we expect quantum optics experiments and applications in the mid-infrared range to benefit from this far-reaching technology.

The inception of a Paleotethyan magmatic arc in Iberia

This paper presents a compilation of recent U-Pb （zircon） ages of late Carboniferous-early Permian （LC EP） calc-alkaline batholiths from lberia, together with a petrogenetic interpretation of magma generation based on comparisons with Mesozoic and Tertiary Cordilleran batholiths and experimental melts. Zircon U-Pb ages distributed over the range ca. 315-280 Ma, indicate a linkage between calc-alkaline magmatism, Iberian orocline generation and Paleotethys subduction. It is also shown that Iberian LC-EP calcalkaline batholiths present unequivocal subduction-related features comparable with typical Cordilleran batholiths of the Pacific Americas active margin, although geochemical features were partially obscured by local modifications of magmas at the level of emplacement by country rock assimilation. When and how LC-EP calc-alkaline batholiths formed in Iberia is then discussed, and a new and somewhat controversial interpretation for their sources and tectonic setting （plume-assisted relamination） is suggested. The batholiths are proposed to have formed during the subduction of the Paleotethys oceanic plate （Pangaea self-subduction） and, consequently, they are unrelated to Variscan collision. The origin of the Iberian batholiths is related to the Eurasian active margin and probably represents the inception of a Paleotethvan arc in the core of Pangaea.
