Phellodendron(PN)species,traditionally used in Chinese medicine for centuries,hold promise as a potential treatment for osteoporosis(OP)and osteoarthritis(OA)due to their bioactive compounds.The bioactive compounds,including berberine and palmatine,exhibit anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and bone-protective properties,contributing to their potential therapeutic benefits in promoting bone health and preventing bone loss.However,challenges such as the need for standardized preparation and dosing,limited clinical studies,and potential interactions with other medications hinder their clinical use.Nonetheless,the rich history of PN species in Chinese medicine provides a promising foundation for future investigation into their potential as alternative treatments for OP and OA.Further research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms of action and explore the clinical implications of PN for bone health.

Pest rodents pose a serious threat to island biodiversity.Fertility control could be an alternative approach to control the impact of rodents on these islands.In this study,we examined the antifertility effects of EP-1 baits containing quinestrol(E)and levonorgestrel(P)using a dose of 50 ppm E and P at three different ratios(E:P ratio=1:2,1:1,and 2:1)on Pacific rats(Rattus exulans)in the Xisha Islands,Hainan,China.Compared to the control group,all animals in EP-1 treatment groups showed significantly decreased food intake and body weight.In treated males,there were obvious abnormalities in testis structure and a significant decrease of relative seminal vesicle weight,but no significant effect on relative uterine and ovarian weights(g kg-1 body weight),or ovarian structure in females.Adding 8%sucrose to the original 50-ppm baits(E:P ratio=1:1)significantly increased bait palatability for males and females.This dose induced uterine edema and abnormalities of ovarian structure in females but had no significant negative effect on the relative testis,epididymis,and seminal vesicle weights(g kg-1 body weight)or sperm density in males.In summary,50-ppm EP-1(1:1)baits have the potential to disrupt the fertility of females,and 8%sucrose addition to the EP-1 baits(E:P ratio=1:1)could improve bait palatability.This dose disrupted the testis structure in males.Future studies are needed to improve bait acceptance and assess the antifertility effects of EP-1(1:1)on Pacific rats in captive breeding trials and underfield conditions.

This study investigated degradation behaviors of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Nabumetone(NMT)and its major metabolite 6-methoxy-2-naphthylacetic acid(MNA)in the coupling process of ultraviolet and monochloramine(UV/NH2Cl).The second-order rate constants of the contaminants reacting with reactive radicals(HO·,Cl·,Cl_(2)·-,and CO_(3)·^(-))were determined by laser flash photolysis experiments.HO·and Cl·contributed predominantly with 52.3%and 21.7%for NMT degradation and 60.8%and 22.3%for MNA degradation.The presence of chlorides retarded the degradation of NMT,while promoted the destruction of MNA,which was ascribed to the photosensitization effects of MNA under UV irradiation.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations revealed that radical adduct formation(RAF)was dominant pathway for both HO·and Cl·reacting with the contaminants,and hydrogen atom transfer(HAT)preferred to occur on side chains of NMT and MNA.NMT reacted with NO_(2)·through single electron transfer(SET)with the second-order rate constant calculated to be 5.35×10^(7)(mol/L)^(-1)sec^(-1),and the contribution of NO_(2)·was predicted to be 13.0%of the total rate constant of NMT in pure water,which indicated that NO_(2)·played a nonnegligible role in the degradation of NMT.The acute toxicity and developmental toxicity of NMT were enhanced after UV/NH_(2)Cl treatment,while those of MNA were alleviated.The transformation products of both NMT and MNA exhibited higher mutagenicity than their parent compounds.This study provides a deep understanding of the mechanism of radical degradation of NMT and MNA in the treatment of UV/NH2Cl.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a highly familial and heritable endocrine disorder. Over half of the daughters born to women with PCOS may eventually develop their own PCOS-related symptoms. Progress in the treatment of PCOS is currently hindered by the complexity of its clinical manifestations and incomplete knowledge of its etiopathogenesis. Various animal models, including experimentally induced, naturally occurring, and spontaneously arising ones, have been established to emulate a wide range of phenotypical and pathological traits of human PCOS. These studies have led to a paradigm shift in understanding the genetic, developmental, and evolutionary origins of this disorder. Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests that animal models are useful in evaluating state-of-the-art drugs and treatments for PCOS. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of recent studies of PCOS in animal models, highlighting the power of these disease models in understanding the biology of PCOS and aiding high-throughput approaches.

tungsten(W),as a plasma-facing material,is subjected to high fluence plasma,resulting in both radiation damage and deuterium(D) retention.This study explores the blistering behavior and D supersaturated layers in both pre-damaged and undamaged W samples.To achieve a uniform damage profile similar to neutron irradiation,carbon(C) ions with multiple energies and angles were employed.The samples were further irradiated with low-energy D ions under two fluences at temperatures from ～380 to 640 K.Using various experimental techniques,we found that pre-damaged W samples can effectively suppress the formation of blistering and lower the threshold temperature at which the surface remains free of blistering.We also observed the prominent D supersaturated peaks within the depth of 20 nm in both pre-damaged and undamaged W.Furthermore,a close correlation between blistering and the D supersaturation was investigated.The results suggest that neutron irradiation in the fusion reactors could increase the critical D concentration for blistering,while a greater depth of damage facilitated the inward diffusion of D,thereby reducing the D concentration gradient and alleviating surface blistering.

Mg-Al alloys have excellent strength and ductility but relatively low thermal conductivity due to Al addition.The accurate prediction of thermal conductivity is a prerequisite for designing Mg-Al alloys with high thermal conductivity.Thus,databases for predicting temperature-and composition-dependent thermal conductivities must be established.In this study,Mg-Al-La alloys with different contents of Al2La,Al3La,and Al11La3phases and solid solubility of Al in the α-Mg phase were designed.The influence of the second phase(s) and Al solid solubility on thermal conductivity was investigated.Experimental results revealed a second phase transformation from Al_(2)La to Al_(3)La and further to Al_(11)La_(3)with the increasing Al content at a constant La amount.The degree of the negative effect of the second phase(s) on thermal diffusivity followed the sequence of Al2La>Al3La>Al_(11)La_(3).Compared with the second phase,an increase in the solid solubility of Al in α-Mg remarkably reduced the thermal conductivity.On the basis of the experimental data,a database of the reciprocal thermal diffusivity of the Mg-Al-La system was established by calculation of the phase diagram (CALPHAD)method.With a standard error of±1.2 W/(m·K),the predicted results were in good agreement with the experimental data.The established database can be used to design Mg-Al alloys with high thermal conductivity and provide valuable guidance for expanding their application prospects.

A recurring challenge of a DC SF_(6)/N_(2)-filled GIS/GIL apparatus is the charge accumulation at DC stress.The conventional design rules and knowledge of AC spacers may not be applicable for this new type of apparatus.A novel design rule is proposed considering the effect of accumulated charge on the threshold of electric field strength being resistant to the superposed voltage.A surface charge accumulation simulation model is introduced,and the key parameters in the simulation model are measured.In addition,an experimental platform for a 100 kV spacer flashover test is established.Spacer flashover tests under superimposed voltage with opposing polarities are carried out,and the withstanding voltage of the spacer is obtained.Finally,based on the proposed model,the threshold of the surface electric field strength(tangential component)on the DC spacer in SF_(6)/N_(2) mixed gases is discussed.For a reliable insulation design of a DC GIS/GIL apparatus filled with 0.7 MPa SF_(6)/N_(2),the threshold of surface electric field strength on the DC spacer is 12 kV/mm.The insulation design rule can be referenced in the design of a high-voltage DC SF_(6)/N_(2)-filled GIS/GIL apparatus.

We synthesized a potassium gadolinium phosphate K3Gd(PO_(4))_(2)with monoclinic structure(P2_(1/m))by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method.Its lattice constants obtained by Rietveld refinements of XRD curve are a=0.7411 nm,b=0.5624 nm,and c=0.9433 nm.Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of K_(3)Gd(PO_(4))_(2)were investigated in detail.The magnetic phase transition temperature of K3Gd(PO_(4))2 was determined by ultra-low temperature testing to be 0.58 K.K_(3)Gd(PO_(4))2 exhibits large magnetic entropy changes(-ΔSM).The maximum-ΔSM are 20.2 and 29.4 J/(kg·K)in the magnetic field variation(ΔH)of 1 and 2 T,respectively,which are larger than that of the commercial Gd_(3)Ga_(5)O_(12)(GGG).The maximum adiabatic temperature change(ΔT_(ad))reaches 5.91 K under a magnetic field change(ΔH)of 1 T.K_(3)Gd(PO_(4))_(2)is a potential magnetic refrigeration material for obtaining sub-Kelvin temperatures.

Psychometric scales,commonly used to gauge sexual function,can sometimes be influenced by response biases.In our researchfrom June 2020 to April 2021,we examined the accuracy of self-reported sexual function scales.We invited patients from theDepartment of Infertility and Sexual Medicine at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University(Guangzhou,China),whohave male sexual dysfunction,to participate by filling out a self-reported version of a specific questionnaire.In addition,they wentthrough a clinician-assisted version of this questionnaire,encompassing tools such as the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool(PEDT),the 6-item International Index of Erectile Function(IIEF-6),the Erection Hardness Scale(EHS),and the MasturbationErection Index(MEI).Using the clinician-assisted version as a reference,we categorized patients and applied various statisticalmethods,such as the Chi-square test,intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC),logistic regression,and the Bland–Altman plot,to gauge reliability.In our study with 322 participants,we found that while there were no notable discrepancies in error ratesbased on our categorization,certain scales showed significant differences in terms of overestimation and underestimation,withthe exception of the PEDT.The positive diagnosis rate consistency between the self-reported and clinician-assisted versions wasobserved.High ICC values between the two versions across the scales were indicative of remarkable reliability.Our findings showthat the self-reported versions of tools such as EHS,IIEF-6,MEI,and PEDT are credible and hold clinical reliability.However,employing a dual-diagnosis approach might be more prudent to circumvent potential misdiagnoses.
