Cob is an earthen building material comprised of sand,clay,straw,and water used for millennia to construct *** cob construction largely died out during the nineteenth century,it is experiencing a revival in England and the Pacific Northwest of the United *** scientific research has investigated the engineering properties of cob,knowledge of which is important for modern-day design practices and code *** at Oregon State University investigated six different Oregon cob mixtures using a series of standard soils and concrete tests adapted for this *** objectives were to characterize the constituents,to establish estimates for the magnitude of,and degree of variability in,the mixture properties,and to develop correlations between the engineering properties and mixture *** indicated low to moderate variation in basic mixture properties(i.e.,unit weight,moisture content,and sand equivalent),moderate variation in strength properties,and high variation in the elastic *** reasonable correlations were found between shrinkage,compressive strength,elastic modulus,and sand equivalent and between flexural strength and fiber tensile strength.

Various studies have shown the interplay between the intestinal microbiome,environmental factors,and genetic changes in colorectal cancer(CrC)*** this review,we highlight the various gut and oral microbiota associated with CrC and colorectal adenomas,and their proposed molecular mechanisms in relation to the processes of“the hallmarks of cancer”,and differences in microbial diversity and abundance between race/*** with CrC showed increased levels of Bacteroides,Prevotella,Escherichia coli,enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis,Streptococcus gallolyticus,Enterococcus faecalis,Fusobacterium nucleatum(***)and Clostridium *** levels of Bacteroides have been found in African American(AA)compared to Caucasian American(CA)***-inflammatory bacteria such as *** and Enterobacter species were significantly higher in ***,AA patients have been shown to have decreased microbial diversity compared to CA *** studies have shown that using microbiome profiles in conjunction with certain risk factors such as age,race and body mass index may help predict healthy colon vs one with adenomas or *** is one of the most common bacterial infections in humans and is more prevalent in Non-Hispanic-Blacks as compared to Non-Hispanic *** condition causes increased systemic inflammation,immune dysregulation,gut microbiota dysbiosis and thereby possibly influencing colorectal ***-associated bacteria such as Fusobacterium,Prevotella,Bacteroides and Porphyromonas have been found in CrC tissues and in feces of CrC ***,a deeper understanding of the association between oral and gastrointestinal bacterial profile,in addition to identifying prevalent bacteria in patients with CrC and the differences observed in ethnicity/race,may play a pivotal role in predicting incidence,prognosis,and lead to the development of new treatments.

multiple myeloma(mm)is a common haematological malignancy that is associated with a high rate of venous thromboembolism(VTE)with almost 10% of patients suffering thrombosis during their disease *** studies have shown that,despite current thromboprophylaxis strategies,VTE rates in mm remain disappointingly *** pathophysiology behind this consistently high rate of VTE is likely multifactorial.A number of factors such as anti-thrombin deficiency or raised coagulation Factor VIII levels may confer resistance to heparin in these patients,however,the optimal method of clinically evaluating this is unclear at present,though some groups have attempted its characterisation with thrombin generation testing(TGT).In addition to testing for heparin resistance,TGT in patients with mm has shown markedly varied abnormalities in both endogenous thrombin potential and serum thrombomodulin *** from these thrombin-mediated processes,other mechanisms potentially contributing to thromboprophylaxis failure include activated protein C resistance,endothelial toxicity secondary to chemotherapy agents,tissue factor abnormalities and the effect of immunoglobulins/“m-proteins”on both the endothelium and on fibrin fibre *** thus appears clear that there are a multitude of factors contributing to the prothrombotic milieu seen in mm and further work is necessitated to elucidate which factors may directly affect and inhibit response to anticoagulation and which factors are contributing in a broader fashion to the hypercoagulability phenotype observed in these patients so that effective thromboprophylaxis strategies can be employed.

α-diversity describes species diversity at local *** Simpson’s and Shannon-Wiener indices are widely used to characterizeα-diversity based on species abundances within a fixed study site(e.g.,a quadrat or plot).Although such indices provide overall diversity estimates that can be analyzed,their values are not spatially continuous nor applicable in theory to any point within the study region,and thus they cannot be treated as spatial covariates for analyses of other ***,we extended the Simpson’s and Shannon-Wiener indices to create point estimates ofα-diversity for any location based on spatially explicit species occurrences within different bandwidths(i.e.,radii,with the location of interest as the center).For an arbitrary point in the study region,species occurrences within the circle plotting the bandwidth were weighted according to their distance from the center using a tri-cube kernel function,with occurrences closer to the center having greater weight than more distant *** novel kernel-basedα-diversity indices were tested using a tree dataset from a 400 m×400 m study region comprising a 200 m×200 m core region surrounded by a 100-m width buffer *** newly extendedα-diversity indices did not disagree qualitatively with the traditional indices,and the former were slightly lower than the latter bymedium and large band *** present work demonstrates the feasibility of using kernel-basedα-diversity indices to estimate diversity at any location in the study region and allows them to be used as quantifiable spatial covariates or predictors for other dependent variables of interest in future ecological *** continuousα-diversity indices are useful to compare and monitor species trends in space and time,which is valuable for conservation practitioners.

Background In beef cattle, more than 50% of the energy input to produce a unit of beef is consumed by the female that produced the calf. Development of genomic tools to identify females with high genetic merit for reproductive function could increase the profitability and sustainability of beef *** Genome-wide association studies(GWAS) were performed using a single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction approach on pregnancy outcome traits from a population of Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers. Furthermore, a validation GWAS was performed using data from another farm. Heifers were genotyped with the Bovine GGP F250 array that contains 221,077 SNPs. In the discovery population, heifers were bred in winter breeding seasons involving a single round of timed artificial insemination(AI) followed by natural mating for 3 months. Two phenotypes were analyzed: pregnancy outcome to first-service AI(PAI;n = 1,481) and pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season(PEBS;n = 1,725). The heritability was estimated as 0.149 and 0.122 for PAI and PEBS, respectively. In the PAI model, one quantitative trait locus(QTL), located between 52.3 and 52.5 mb on BTA7, explained about 3% of the genetic variation, in a region containing a cluster of γ-protocadherin genes and SLC25A2. Other QTLs explaining between 0.5% and 1% of the genetic variation were found on BTA12 and 25. In the PEBS model, a large QTL on BTA7 was synonymous with the QTL for PAI, with minor QTLs located on BTA5, 9, 10, 11, 19, and 20. The validation population for pregnancy status at the end of the breeding season were Angus–Brahman crossbred heifers bred by natural mating. VOFilter is an XmL based filter developed by the Chinese Virtual Observatory project to transform tabular data files from VOTable format into OpenDocument format. VOTable is an XmL format defined for the exchange of tabular data in the context of the Virtual Observatory （VO）. It is the first Proposed recommendation defined by International Virtual Observatory Alliance, and has obtained wide support from both the VO community and many Astronomy projects. *** is a mature, open source, and front office application suite with the advantage of native support of industrial standard OpenDocument XmL file format. Using the VOFilter, VOTable files can be loaded in *** Calc, a spreadsheet application, and then displayed and analyzed as other spreadsheet files. Here, the VOFilter acts as a connector, bridging the coming VO with current industrial office applications. We introduce Virtual Observatory and technical background of the VOFilter. Its workflow, installation and usage are presented. Existing problems and limitations are also discussed together with the future development plans.
