Investigating the effect of cosolvents on P3HT/O-IDTBR film-forming kinetics and film morphology

The morphology of active layer in bulk heterojunction(BHJ) organic solar cells is decisive to the device performance. Previous works have shown that the solvent engineering is an effective method to optimize the morphology of active layer. However, screening the proper solvent is a tedious task, and we know very little about how to select a proper solvent for a particular system, especially for polymer/nonfullerene blend systems. Here, we combined the spectroscopic analysis in various solvent mixtures during film-forming process to reveal the relationship among the cosolvent characteristics, film-forming kinetics and film morphology. In this article, P3 HT/O-IDTBR blend was selected as model system due to being facile synthesized under a large-scale. Chlorobenzene(CB) was selected as main solvent, and the cosolvents were grouped into three categories according to its boiling point(bp) compared to *** cosolvents with lower bp, like chloroform(CF), can facilitate a faster film-forming process, reducing the domain size but sacrificing the crystallinity of both components. For the cosolvents with higher bp,like o-dichlorobenzene(DCB) and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene(TCB), the self-organization process of P3 HT and O-IDTBR is separated and its duration was extended, constructing highly crystalline nanointerpenetrating network. However, the cosolvents with very high bp, such as chlornaphthalene(CN),would residue in film and keep P3 HT and O-IDTBR self-organizing for longer time, leading to larger phase separation. This work systematically investigated the effect of cosolvent on the film-forming kinetics, and proposed a guideline of how to select a proper cosolvent according to the crystallinity and domain size of active layer.

Induction of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and lipoxygenase in cotton seedlings by mechanical wounding and aphid infestation

It has been suggested that infestation of plants causes increases in the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and lipoxygenase (LOX), key enzymes in the phenolic compounds synthesis pathway and the octadecanoid pathway, respectively. The purpose of this work is to investigate whether the infestation of cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) and mechanical wound can cause the induction of PAL and LOX activities in cotton seedlings, and whether the induction occurs in healthy seedlings growing nearby the attacked ones. The specific activities of PAL and LOX were measured using spectrophotometric method after aphid infestation and mechanical wounding. Result indicated that PAL activity and LOX activity were greatly induced by mechanical wounding and aphid infestation in cotton seedlings. The induction of PAL and LOX occurred not only in wounded and infested seedlings but also in intact healthy seedlings growing nearby. After exposed to the aphid infestation-induced volatiles, the specific activity of PAL in cotton seedlings increased by 6% at 24 h, 80% at 48 h, 235% at 72 h compared to the control, and the specific activity of LOX increased by 18% at 24 h, 34% at 48 h, 24% at 72 h, respectively. In comparison, the specific activity of PAL in unwounded seedlings exposed to wound-induced volatiles increased by 0.0 at 24 h, 200% at 48 h, 164% at 72 h, respectively and the specific activity of LOX increased by 28% at 24 h, 37% at 48 h, 8% at 72 h, respectively. It suggests that the induced volatiles are involved in plant-plant communication as airborne transferred signals.

As essential B vitamin for humans, folates accumulation in edible parts of crops, such as maize kernels, Is of great importance for human health. But its breeding is always limited by the prohibitive cost of folate profiling. The molecular breeding is a more executable and efficient way for folate fortification, but is limited by the molecular knowledge of folate regulation. Here we report the genetic mapping of folate quantitative trait loci (QTLs) using a segregated population crossed by two maize lines, one high in folate (GEMS31) and the other low in folate (DAN3130). Two folate QTLs on chromosome 5 were obtained by the combination of F2 whole-exome sequencing and F3 kernel-folate profiling. These two QTLs had been confirmed by bulk segregant analysis using F6 pooled DNA and F7 kernel-folate profiling, and were overlapped with QTLs identified by another segregated population. These two QTLs contributed 41.6% of phenotypic variation of 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, the most abundant storage form among folate derivatives in dry maize grains, in the GEMS31×DAN3130 population. Their fine mapping and functional analysis will reveal details of folate metabolism, and provide a basis for marker-assisted breeding aimed at the enrichment of folates in maize kernels.

A Review of Location Methods of Nasogastric Tube in Critically Ill Patients

Nasogastric tube is widely used in intensive care units. The complications of misplacement are rare but very dangerous for critically ill patients. Accurate localization of the position of the tip of nasogastric tube can effectively decrease complications and ensure the safety of critically ill patients. There are various methods that can be used to verify the location of the nasogastric tube such as radiography, PH measurement, electromagnetic navigator and ultrasound. However, there is a lack of general consensus regarding a standard method. In this review, we found that the accuracy of nasogastric tube placement can be greatly improved by visual technology such as X-ray, sonography and electromagnetic navigator. However, visual technology has not been widely used to locate the tip of nasogastric tube in critically ill patients. Best practice guidelines based on the available knowledge and evidence of current methods are necessary to increase the accuracy placement of nasogastric tube. It is envisioned that development of visual technologies will determine a new standard of care for verification of placement of nasogastric tube.

Comparison of the Effectiveness of Marked Suction Tubes vs. Plain Suction Tubes in Pediatric Mechanically Ventilated Patients

Introduction: Endotracheal suction plays a crucial role in the management of mechanically ventilated patients. This study aims to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of suction tubes with markings in mechanically ventilated pediatric patients. Materials and Methods: A randomized assignment was carried out on a cohort of 52 pediatric patients who underwent mechanical ventilation in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, covering the period from January 2022 to December 2022. These patients were divided into two groups: an improved group (n = 26) utilizing marked suction tubes, and a regular group (n = 26) employing conventional suction tubes. The objective of our study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of marked suction tubes. Results: The effects of the improved group on the vital signs of children undergoing mechanical ventilation were small and statistically significant compared with the regular group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the improved group exhibited a reduced frequency of sputum suction, shorter mechanical ventilation duration, and fewer days of hospitalization in the PICU compared to the regular group during the ventilation period. Notably, the difference in the duration of PICU hospitalization was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Moreover, the incidence of adverse reactions in the improved group was notably lower, with statistically significant differences observed in airway mucous membrane damage and irritating cough when compared to the regular group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The utilization of marked suction tubes provides clinical nurses with clear guidance for performing suctioning with ease, efficiency and safety. Consequently, advocating for the widespread implementation of marked suction tubes in clinical practice is a commendable pursuit.
