Estimation of genetic parameters and breeding values in shrimp F enneropenaeus chinensis using the REML/BLUP procedure

An analysis of a selection experiment was used to assess the impact of various animal model struc- tures on REML estimates of variance components. The analyses were carried out based on 162 d body mass （BM） of 1 287 animals from 21 paternal half-sib groups of Fenneropenaeus chinensis. Estimated breeding values （EBV） of BM of all individuals were estimated using eight statistical models （A, AB, ABC, ABDC, ABMFC, ABMDC, ABFDC and ABMFDC） and BLUP （best linear unbiased prediction）. These models were designed involving factors such as sex, spawn date as fixed effects, maternal genetic effects, full-sib family effects as random effects, mean BM of families at tagging and age at recording （covariate）. The results demonstrate the importance of correct interpretation of effects in the data set, particularly those that can influence resemblance between relatives. The data structure and the particular model that was applied markedly influenced the magnitude of variance component estimates. Models based on few effects obtained upward biased estimates of additive genetic variance. The accuracy of genetic parameters and breeding value es- timated by ABFDC model was higher than other models. The results imply that additive genetic direct value, full-sib family effects, and covariance effects besides sex and spawn date as fixed effects were very important for estimating genetic parameters and breeding value of body mass. This model had a heritability estimate of 162 d BM of 0.44. The comparison of the efficiency of selection based on breeding values or phenotypic value revealed great difference： average breeding value of the best 24 families selected by the 162 d BM breeding value and phenotype were 0.577 g and 0.366 g, respectively, representing a 36.57% higher efficiency in the former. For the purpose of time-domain calculation of wave forces on moored ships ina harbor, the 2D/3D coupled numerical model was developed, in which the horizontally 2Dshallow-water wave model based on the improved Boussinesq equations was adopted for the calculationin the wide region located far from the ships while the 3D numerical model based on theReynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations was used in the limited region adjacent to theships. The domain connection technique with overlaping region between different model regions wasapplied and examined. It is shown that the present partially 3D hybrid model saves calculation timesignificantly compared to the full 3D model for the whole region and is capable of reproducing thecharacteristics of 3D and complicated flows around the ships and 3D hydrodynamic loads on them,which cannot be reproduced by the 2D model alone.

Locating the quantitized natural sediment fingerprints is an important work for marine sediment dynamics *** total of 146 sediment samples were collected from the Shelf of the East China Sea and five rivers,including Huanghe （Yellow）,Changjiang （Yangtze）,Qiantang,Ou and Min *** sediment grain size and the contents of rare earth elements （REEs） were measured with laser particle size analyzer and ICP-MS *** results show that absolute REE content （ΣREE） and the concentration ratio of light REEs to heavy REEs （L/HREE） are different in the sediments among those *** are higher REE contents in being less than 2 m and 2–31 μm fractions in the Changjiang Estuary surface *** REE contents of bulk sediment are dominated by the corresponding values of those leading *** of sediment is higher close to the estuaries and declines seaward on the inner shelf of the East China Sea （ECS）.The L/HREE ratio has a tendency of increase southward from 28 ？ *** conditions plays a predominate role on spacial distributions of the surficial sediment’s REE *** some situations,the currents tend to remove the coarser light grains from initial populations,as well as the deposit of the finer heavy mineral *** other situations,the currents will change the ratio of sediment constituents,such as ratio between silts and clays in the *** a result,the various values of REE or L/HREE ratio in different bulk sediments are more affected by the change of size-fractions than source *** the long-term stable hydrodynamic environment,i.e.,the East China Sea Shelf,new sediment transport model based on the size and density gradation concept may help to understand the spatial distribution patterns of REE parameters.

The result of an analysis of mollusca remains collected from the Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea and Bering Sea in the First chinese National Arctic Research Expedition, from July to September, 1999 is presented. Seventeen species of mollusca have been identified, which belong to two classes: Bivalvia and Gastropoda. The compositions of the mollusca are very simple. According to the distribution pattern two groups may be distinguished among molluscan species. The Pan-Arctic and circumboreal group comprises Nuculana pernula, ***, Nucula bellotii, Astarte montagui, Seripes groenlandicus, Macoma calcarea, M. moesta alaskana, Liocyrna fluctuosa, Mya pseudoarenaria and Turritella polaris. Three species, Cyclocardia crebricostata, Trichotrois coronata and Argobuccinum oregonense are components of the Pan-Arctic and Pacific boreal group. With regard to feeding habits, detritus feeders dominate. There are 7 species of detritus feeders, i.e., Nuculana pernula, N. radiata, Nucula bellotii, Macoma calcarea, M. moesta alaskana, Macoma sp. and Trichotropis coronata. Detritus feeders are dominant with regard to the numbers of species as well as to the frequency of occurrence. Macoma calcarea is the most abundant species.

To study how the air and sea interact with each other during El Ni o/La Nina onsets, extended associate pattern analysis (EAPA) isadopted with the simple ocean data assimilation (SODA) data. The results show that as El Nino/La Nina's parents their behaviors arequite different, there does not exist a relatively independent tropical atmosphere but does exist a relatively independent tropical PacificOcean because the air is heated from the bottom surface instead of the top surface and of much stronger baroclinic instability than thesea and has a very large inter-tropical convergence zone covering the most tropical Pacific Ocean. The idea that it is the wester burstand wind convergence, coming from middle latitudes directly that produce the seawater eastward movement and meridionalconvergence in the upper levels and result in the typical El Nino sea surface temperature warm signal is confirmed again.

A high quality cDNA library was constructed from the brown alga Laminaria japonica,with the titer of 1.2×10 5 pfu/*** average insert size of the cDNA library is about 1.6 *** the cDNA library,591 cDNA clones were randomly selected and *** a result,574 EST(expressed sequence tag) sequences were *** of the 574 ESTs were submitted to the dbEST database section of GenBank with the accession numbers from CX942625 to *** cDNA library was screened with a α-32 p labeled 453 bp T P S gene probe,which is a partial sequence yielded from Porphyra *** positive cDNA clones were screened and the sequencing data showed that these four cDNA clones covered majority of *** TPS cDNA *** PCR amplification,sequencing and assembling,the entire ORF(open reading frame) sequence of the T P S gene was obtained,which was named *** encodes a protein containing 908 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 101 674 *** LjTPS gene was successfully expressed in *** and *** LjTPS gene has potential application both in plant breeding to stress tolerance and in deciphering the T P S gene function and mechanism to stress tolerance.

Application of forecasting structural cracks technique of 3DMove in Chengdao buried hill

3DMove software, based on the three-dimension structural model of geologic inter- pretation, can forecast reservoir cracks from the point of view of formation of the structural ge- ology, and analyze the characteristics of the cracks. 3DMove software dominates in forecasting cracks. We forecast the developments and directions of the cracks in Chengbei buried hill with the application of forecasting technique in 3DMove software, and obtain the chart about strain distributing on top in buried hill and the chart about relative density and orientation and the chart about the analysis of crack unsealing. In Chengbei 30 buried hill zone, north-west and north-east and approximately east-west cracks in Cenozoic are very rich and the main directions in every fault block are different. Forecasting results that are also verified by those of drilling approxi- mately accord with the data from well logging, the case of which shows that the technique has the better ability in forecasting cracks, and takes more effects on exploration and exploitation of crack reservoir beds in ancient buried hill reservoirs.

A detailed petrologic and mineralogic study was carried out on serpentinized peridotites dredged from the southern landward slopes of the Mariana Trench,in order to reveal the serpentinization process of these unusual rocks and to identify the sole presence of the mineral *** constituent minerals of these southern Mariana forearc peridotites are olivine,amphibole and spinel,as well as serpentine,chlorite and *** with serpentinite seamounts,the serpentinized peridotites from the southern Mariana forearc are characterized by the absence of magnetite and brucite,and the common presence of talc;besides,the serpentine mineral variety is simplex,only *** mineral chemistry and mineral phase relationships,we conclude that(1) the absence of magnetite in the serpentinized peridotites is due to incomplete serpentinization,other than magnetite,the iron end-member in olivine forms Ferich brucite and Fe-rich serpentine;(2) brucite is not stable with high silica activity,reacting with later SiO2-rich fluid and then forming lizardite,leading to a lack of brucite in these serpentinized peridotites;(3) the occurrence of talc is the result of later SiO2-rich fluid reactions with lizardite;and(4) the reason for the sole occurrence of lizardite is that the temperature condition of our study are awas nothig henough for the formation of antigorite(whichisstable at >500 °C).Despite the broad overlap of lizardite and chrysotile in growth temperature,differences in the modes of occurrence of lizardite and chrysotile,such as the scarcity of H2O,low porosity and permeability,as well as the actual situation of initial serpentinization in the study area,result in the absolute prevalence of lizardite over chrysotile in the area.

Dispersion relation of internal waves in thewestern equatorial Pacific Ocean

Based mainly on TOGA-COARE data, that is, the CTD data from R/V Xiangyanghong No. 5 (Pu et al., 1993), the temperature and current data from the Woods Hole mooring and other deep current data, the layered numerical profiles of buoyancy frequency and mean current components are figured out. A numerical method calculating internal wave dispersion relation without background shear current, used by Fliegel and Hunkins (1975), is improved to be fit for the internal wave equation with mean currents and their second derivatives. The dispersion relations and wave functions of the long crested internal wave progressing in any direction can be calculated conveniently by using the improved method. A comparison between the calculated dispersion relation in the paper and the dispersion relation in GM spectral model of ocean internal waves (Garret and Munk, 1972) is performed. It shows that the mean currents are important to the dispersion relation of internal waves in the western equatorial Pacific Ocean and that the currents make the wave progressing co-directional with (against) the currents stretched (shrink). The influence of the mean currents on dispersion relation is much stronger than that of their second derivatives, but that on wave function is less than that of their second derivatives. The influences on wave functions result in the change of vertical wavenumber, that is, making the wave function stretch or shrink. There exists obvious turning depth but no significant critical layer absorption is found.
