Control of fine particulate nitrate during severe winter haze in“2+26”cities

The“2+26”cities,suffering the most severe winter haze pollution,have been the key region for air quality improvement in China.Increasing prominent nitrate pollution is one of the most challenging environmental issues in this region,necessitating development of an effective control strategy.Herein,we use observations,and state-of-the-art model simulations with scenario analysis and process analysis to quantify the effectiveness of the future SO_(2)-NO_(X)-VOC-NH_(3) emission control on nitrate pollution mitigation in“2+26”cities.Focusing on a serious winter haze episode,we find that limited NO_(X)emission reduction alone in the short-term period is a less effective choice than VOC or NH_3emission reduction alone to decrease nitrate concentrations,due to the accelerated NO_(X)-HNO_(3)conversion by atmospheric oxidants and the enhanced HNO_(3)to NO_(3)^(-)partition by ammonia,although deep NO_(X)emission reduction is essential in the long-term period.The synergistic NH_(3) and VOC emission control is strongly recommended,which can counteract the adverse effects of nonlinear photochemistry and aerosol chemical feedback to decrease nitrate more.Such extra benefits will be reduced if the synergistic NH_(3) and VOC reduction is delayed,and thus reducing emission of multiple precursors is urgently required for the effective control of increasingly severe winter nitrate pollution in“2+26”cities.

Floods caused by extreme weather events and climate change have increased in occurrence and severity all over the world,resulting in devastation and disruption of activities.Researchers and policy practitioners have increasingly paid attention to the role of critical infrastructure(CI)in disaster risk reduction,flood resilience and climate change adaptation in terms of its backbone functions in maintaining societal services in hazard attacks.The analysed city in this study,Xinxiang(Henan province,China),was affected by an extreme flood event that occurred on 17–23 July 2021,which caused great socio-economic losses.However,few studies have focused on medium-sized cities and the flood cascading effects on CI during this event.Therefore,this study explores the damages caused by this flooding event with links to CI,such as health services,energy supply stations,shelters and transport facilities(HEST infrastructure).To achieve this,the study first combines RGB(red,green blue)composition and supervised classification for flood detection to monitor and map flood inundation areas.Second,it manages a multiscenario simulation and evaluates the cascading effects on HEST infrastructure.Diverse open-source data are employed,including Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar(SAR)data and Landsat-8 OIL data,point-of-interest(POI)and OpenStreetMap(OSM)data.The study reveals that this extreme flood event has profoundly affected croplands and villagers.Due to the revisiting period of Sentinel-1 SAR data,four scenarios are simulated to portray the retreated but‘omitted’floodwater:Scenario 0 is the flood inundation area on 27 July,and Scenarios 1,2 and 3 are built based on this information with a buffer of 50,100 and 150 m outwards,respectively.In the four scenarios,as the inundation areas expand,the affected HEST infrastructure becomes more clustered at the centre of the core study area,indicating that those located in the urban centre are more susceptible to flooding.furthermore,the affected transport facilities assemble in the north a

Objective:This study aimed to reveal the antitumor effects of Chinese herbal formulae and the underlying mechanisms in treating colorectal cancer,with a focus on developing traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)as a supplement and alternative therapeutic method for cancers.Materials and Methods:Human colon cancer SW480 cells were treated with three Chinese herbal formulae,Bu Zhong Yi Qi Decoction,fuzi Lizhong Decoction,and Pulsatilla Decoction at different concentrations(50–600μg/mL)for 24,36,and 48 h,respectively.Cell viability was determined using the resazurin reduction assay,and cell survival rate was evaluated using a colony formation assay.After treatment with different concentrations(50–600μg/mL)of these three formulae for 48 h,the effects of the Chinese herbal formulae on cell apoptosis were investigated using Hoechst/propidium iodide(PI)staining.The positive PI-stained cells were investigated using an EnSpire multilabel plate reader and the positive Hoechst-stained cells were observed under a fluorescence microscope for morphological changes.Results:Bu Zhong Yi Qi Decoction,fuzi Lizhong Decoction,and Pulsatilla Decoction inhibited SW480 cell proliferation in a dose-and time-dependent manner and induced cell apoptosis.Conclusion:Chinese herbal formulae with a special prescription form of TCM with antitumor effects bring a new perspective in line with the principles of TCM in cancer treatment.

The impact of political connections on firm pollution: New evidence based on heterogeneous environmental regulation

Increasing attention has been focused on the extent to which corporate political connections influence the growing pollution due to the rapid growth in the popularity of firm pollution in developing countries.We adopt a static threshold regression model to investigate the effects of heterogeneous environmental regulation on political connections and firm pollution based on the panel data from China’s A-share listed companies from 2012 to 2019.The empirical results show a non-linear relationship between the degree of political connection of listed company executives and the level of firm pollution.And the relationship between the two roughly presents a U-shaped relationship under the action of the marketincentive environmental regulation threshold.However,it roughly presents an inverted N-shaped relationship under the action of the command-control environmental regulation threshold.Additionally,the group test results show that the existence of regional and ownership heterogeneity causes certain differences in the environmental behaviour of politically connected enterprises.These findings indicate that diverse environmental regulations are needed to promote sustainable green development and to further expand the theoretical and practical exploration of political connections on firm pollution.

This paper deals with the problem of state feedback control for a class of the distributed parameter systems with the disturbance term. And the considered distributed parameter systems are composed of the second order hyperbolic partial differential equations. Two different classes of restrictions on the disturbance term are given, one is that the disturbance term satisfies the linear growth constraint condition to the state variables of the system, and the other is that the disturbance term obeys the bound constraint under the significance of L;. Based on a variable structure method, the state feedback controllers are obtained by means of constructing appropriate Lyapunov functional. The closed-loop systems are globally asymptotically stable on W;（0, 1） × L;（0, 1） space under the effect of the state feedback control laws. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

To meet the challenge of camouflaged object detection (COD),which has a high degree of intrinsic similarity between the object and background,this paper proposes a double-branch fusion network(DBFN)with a parallel attention selection mechanism (PASM).In detail,a schismatic receptive field block(SRF)combined with an attention mechanism for low-level information is performed to learn texture features in one branch,and an integration of the SRF,a hybrid attention mechanism (HAM),and a depth feature polymerization module (DFPM)is employed for high-level information to extract detection features in the other branch.Then,both texture features and detection features are input into the PASM to acquire selective expression matrices.Eventually,the final result is obtained after further selective matrix optimization with atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP)and a residual channel attention block (RCAB)being applied serially.Experimental results on three public datasets verify that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of four evaluation metrics,i.e.,mean absolute error (MAE),weighted F βmeasure (Fβω),structural measure (Sα),and E-measure (Eφ)

Bacteria-associated infection and poor osseointegration are two main reasons for orthopedic implant failure.Ti-Cu alloy exhibited excellent antibacterial property,but still presented unsatisfied osteogenic activities.Therefore,Ti-Cu alloy was surface modified by an alkali-heat treatment in this paper to improve the osteogenic ability without reduction in antibacterial ability.A TiO_(2)/CuO/Cu_(2)O composite coating with nanostructure was deposited on Ti-Cu alloy.The coating showed increased roughness and great hydrophilicity.Antibacterial tests indicated that the modified Ti-Cu alloy exhibited stronger antibacterial ability against Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)than Ti-Cu alloy.Meanwhile,cell experiments demonstrated that the composite coating promoted initial adhesion and spreading of MC3T3-E1 cells,enhanced alkaline phosphatase(ALP)activities as well as extracellular matrix(ECM)mineralization,and significantly upregulated osteogenesis-related gene expressions.It was suggested that the nano-structured TiO_(2)/CuO/Cu_(2)O coating on Ti-Cu alloy might provide a potential strategy for orthopedic implant failure.

Stochastic variational inference is an efficient Bayesian inference technology for massive datasets,which approximates posteriors by using noisy gradient estimates.Traditional stochastic variational inference can only be performed in a centralized manner,which limits its applications in a wide range of situations where data is possessed by multiple nodes.Therefore,this paper develops a novel trust-region based stochastic variational inference algorithm for a general class of conjugate-exponential models over distributed and asynchronous networks,where the global parameters are diffused over the network by using the Metropolis rule and the local parameters are updated by using the trust-region method.Besides,a simple rule is introduced to balance the transmission frequencies between neighboring nodes such that the proposed distributed algorithm can be performed in an asynchronous manner.The utility of the proposed algorithm is tested by fitting the Bernoulli model and the Gaussian model to different datasets on a synthetic network,and experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness and advantages over existing works.

Dear editor,Iterative learning control(ILC)has a wellestablished research history,as shown in[1,2].By generating a correct control signal from the previous control execution,it can achieve perfect tracking performance on a finite time interval.In the process of ILC design,the D-type[1]and P-type learning schemes[2]are often used to obtain good tracking performance and are applied,respectively,to irregular systems(without direct transmission from inputs to outputs)[1]and regular systems(with direct transmission from inputs to outputs)[2].
